Radar is generally less dependent on visible light than a camera, so it can have an advantage in darkness or when visual contrast is poor. But radar is not immune to weather: heavy rain, snow, road spray, or a covered sensor can interfere with it too. Whether an ADAS feature remains available depends on the vehicle, sensor placement, software, feature, and conditions.
What cameras and radar detect
A camera captures visible-light images. Driver-assistance software can use those images to identify lane markings, vehicles, pedestrians, signs, and other visual features. Its view can be compromised by darkness, glare, moisture, dirt, or anything that obscures the windshield area in front of it.

Radar sends and receives radio waves to detect objects and estimate their distance and relative movement. Because it does not rely on visible light, it can retain an advantage over a camera when illumination or visual contrast is poor. That is a relative strength, not a promise that radar will work in every kind of bad weather.
How poor visibility affects each sensor
| Condition | Camera considerations | Radar considerations | Practical caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Darkness or low light | A camera may have less usable visual information when lighting is poor. | Radar is less dependent on visible light. | Performance still depends on the particular sensor, feature, and vehicle; this does not establish that every radar-based system will operate safely or remain available. |
| Glare or poor visual contrast | Glare and low contrast can make visual interpretation harder. | Radar does not depend on a visible image in the same way. | A camera may be important for tasks that rely on visual details, such as lane markings; sensor roles differ by feature. |
| Heavy rain, snow, or thick fog | Precipitation or fog can reduce the camera’s usable view. Hyundai’s 2025 US owner manual lists heavy rain, snow, and thick fog among conditions that may affect Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist. | Heavy rain or snow, as well as swirling road spray or snow, can interfere with radar signals, according to owner-manual guidance. | Neither sensor should be treated as a guarantee of ADAS availability in severe weather. |
| Dirt, ice, or snow covering a sensor area | Material on the windshield camera area can obstruct its view. | Dirt, ice, snow, or other material on a radar cover or sensor can interfere with operation. | Check the vehicle manual for the exact sensor location and approved cleaning instructions; layouts vary. |
Hyundai’s 2025 US manual says its Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist may be reduced or temporarily disabled when the windshield camera area, radar cover, or sensor is covered, and identifies low light and other conditions as possible limitations. A NHTSA-hosted Honda owner-manual excerpt and a Ford owner manual also describe ways rain, snow, spray, fog, or sensor blockage can affect radar. These are vehicle-specific warnings, not a universal ranking of sensor performance.

Does having both sensors solve the problem?
Some vehicles combine inputs from more than one sensor. That can give a system additional information, but it does not guarantee that a particular feature will remain available in adverse weather. Hyundai warns that a blocked camera or radar can temporarily limit or disable a feature. The result depends on which sensors a feature uses, how the vehicle combines their inputs, and what conditions the system detects.
There are no verified general-purpose figures here from a controlled, head-to-head comparison showing how much better one sensor performs across darkness, fog, rain, and snow. NHTSA’s 2024 NCAP Final Decision Notice summarizes stakeholder comments proposing reduced-visibility testing; those comments are not NHTSA findings from a camera-versus-radar test. The notice also summarizes concerns that heavy rain and snow can limit automatic emergency braking through reduced tire traction, a separate limitation from sensor detection.

What to do when a sensor warning appears
- Take the warning seriously. A blocked- or obscured-sensor message can mean an ADAS feature is limited or unavailable. Do not assume another sensor will fully compensate.
- Stop somewhere safe before checking the vehicle. Do not reach toward a sensor or clean the vehicle while driving.
- Use the owner manual’s instructions for your vehicle. If it permits cleaning, follow its directions and clean only the specified area. Hyundai’s manual, for example, calls for a soft cloth on the camera windshield area and radar cover.
- Check whether the warning clears as instructed. Do not apply an unapproved coating, cover, or tool, or assume cleaning will resolve a fault or weather-related limitation.
- Contact the service provider specified in the manual if the warning persists. A persistent warning may need vehicle-specific diagnosis; follow the manufacturer’s guidance rather than trying to adjust or recalibrate a sensor yourself.
Drive for the conditions, not the sensor
Fog, heavy rain, and snow can reduce the driver’s own visibility, change road grip, and affect how much control the vehicle can maintain. An ADAS feature cannot make it safe to drive too fast, follow too closely, or rely on traction that the road does not provide. NHTSA’s notice records concerns about reduced tire traction in heavy rain and snow; sensor detection alone cannot remove that physical constraint.
