First, identify what kind of problem you have
A monitor can show video even when touch input is unavailable: many external touch displays use one connection for the picture and a separate USB connection to send touch data. Use the symptom to choose where to start.

1. Verify that the exact monitor supports touch
Check the monitor’s specifications or original configuration for the precise model. A working picture, a touch-style appearance, or a display name alone does not establish that a monitor has touch capability. For a Dell display, Dell says Windows’ “View pen and touch info” can indicate whether pen or touch input is available. For another brand, use that manufacturer’s specifications and support documentation.

2. Check the separate touch-data connection
On an external touchscreen monitor, look for a USB cable running from the monitor to the computer, in addition to the video cable. Reseat both ends and use the cable and port specified in the manual for your model. The display connection can carry a picture while the separate touch connection is disconnected.

Dell’s instruction for its touch-enabled monitors is: “verify that the USB cable is connected from the monitor to the computer to enable the touch screen feature.” For the Dell P2418HT specifically, Dell recommends using the supplied USB cable and suggests reconnecting USB or power-cycling the monitor if the computer does not detect it. Those directions are model-specific, not a universal cable specification.
If the original cable is missing or damaged, check the manual and the connectors at both ends before buying a replacement. Do not assume that every touchscreen monitor uses the same USB cable type.

3. Restart and inspect the screen
- Save your work and restart the computer. This can prompt Windows to detect the touch device again.
- If touch is intermittent or inaccurate, inspect the screen for moisture, dirt, a screen protector, or another obstruction.
- Follow the monitor maker’s cleaning instructions. Dell’s general guidance is to turn the device off, use a clean, soft microfiber cloth lightly dampened with water, and let the screen dry before reconnecting power. Avoid unsupported pens, tools, or cleaning methods.
Cleaning may help with an obstruction, but it will not reconnect a missing USB link or repair failed touch hardware.

- Open Device Manager and expand Human Interface Devices.
- Look for HID-compliant touch screen. If it is present but disabled, enable it.
- If the device is present but touch still does not work, use its Device Manager option to uninstall it, then restart the computer so Windows can detect it again.
Dell documents these steps for touchscreen troubleshooting. On supported modern Windows versions, the touch driver is built in, so avoid downloading an unverified “touchscreen driver” from a third-party site. If the problem appears tied to an update, use the computer or monitor maker’s support process for applicable Windows, chipset, or monitor updates.

Dell also describes a USB chipset-driver possibility for an external desktop touch display after a Windows 10 upgrade, and recommends checking whether reconnecting the upstream USB cable makes HID devices appear. Treat that as a diagnostic for that particular upgrade scenario, not as a general cause of touchscreen failure.
5. Calibrate only if touch works but is misaligned
If Windows detects touches but the pointer appears away from where you touch, check the calibration controls available in your Windows version. First confirm the monitor’s USB touch connection is attached: Dell notes that Tablet PC Settings may not appear for an external display when that cable is disconnected. Follow the monitor and Windows documentation for the available settings.

Calibration addresses where recognized touches land; it will not restore input when Windows does not detect a touch device at all.
6. When to contact the manufacturer or a repair provider
Consult the support page for the exact monitor model if touch remains unavailable after you have confirmed touch capability and the USB connection, checked the Windows device, and restarted. Seek manufacturer diagnostics or repair if the screen has physical or liquid damage, the manufacturer’s diagnostic reports a fault, or the steps specified for your model fail. A factory reset or replacement panel should not be assumed necessary without a model-specific diagnosis.
