The Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card can both store and play Series X|S-optimized games. A USB external drive can store those games, but they generally must be moved to the console’s internal storage or an expansion card before you can play them. USB drives can also play supported non-optimized and older-generation games directly.
What is the practical difference?
Both options add room for installed games, but they do not offer the same ability to launch games from that added storage. The key distinction is whether you want to play an optimized Series X|S game without first moving it.

What can a USB external drive store and play?
A USB drive can hold Series X|S-optimized games, so it can serve as a place to keep titles installed when console internal storage is full. But storage does not mean direct play: Seagate’s guidance says optimized games on USB must be moved to the console’s internal storage or the Storage Expansion Card before play. Seagate Support
USB is also useful for supported non-optimized games. Seagate describes playing non-optimized games, including Xbox One games, from USB storage. Xbox Wire’s 2020 technology glossary states: “Previous generation Xbox titles can still be played directly from external USB 3.2 hard drives.” That is a statement about previous-generation titles that the console supports, not a guarantee that every Xbox One, Xbox 360, or original Xbox title is compatible. Microsoft’s Game Publishing Guide covers technical capabilities and backward compatibility.

- Choose the expansion card if you want expanded storage from which to play Series X|S-optimized games directly.
- Choose a USB external drive if your priority is keeping more games installed, playing supported older or non-optimized games from external storage, or holding optimized games until you move them to playable storage.
- Consider both roles if you want direct-play space for optimized games and extra USB capacity for older titles or games you are not currently playing.
USB 3.x external hard drives and SSDs are common options for the USB-storage role, but individual drives can differ. The cited guidance does not establish a minimum capacity or guarantee identical behavior for every drive, so check current Xbox support instructions and the drive’s compatibility details before purchasing. What the storage comparison does—and does not—tell you
Xbox Wire’s glossary also mentions a 1 TB Seagate custom storage solution as a launch-era example. That figure is historical context, not confirmation of the current card lineup or a buying recommendation. Current models, capacities, prices, and stock were not established by the cited sources.
Microsoft’s Smart Delivery overview and game setup guidance provide related context about game versions and installation. They do not change the central storage distinction: an optimized game may be stored on USB without being playable from USB.
