DuckDuckGo says it does not store chats by default, strips identifying metadata before sending prompts to model providers, and requires those providers not to train on chats. Claude is another ad-free option, but its consumer policy allows model improvement in specific cases, including when you opt in or a conversation is flagged for safety review. Neither “ad-free” nor “private” means that a service never processes or temporarily retains conversation data.
What “ad-free” does—and does not—tell you
Ad-free describes whether a service displays advertising; it does not tell you whether conversations are retained, used to improve models, or accessible for safety, support, or legal reasons. The useful comparison is how each service handles those separate issues, and whether the terms apply to your region, plan, settings, and chosen model.

ChatGPT itself is also not uniformly ad-supported: OpenAI says it is testing ads in the United States on Free and Go plans, while Plus and Pro subscriptions are ad-free. Duck.ai: the strongest documented privacy starting point
DuckDuckGo says Duck.ai chats are not recorded or stored by default. It says it removes identifying metadata, such as IP addresses, before sending a prompt to an underlying provider, and that its provider agreements require zero data retention and prohibit model training on chats. These are DuckDuckGo’s stated safeguards, not a claim that no processing occurs anywhere.
The exceptions matter. DuckDuckGo says some OpenAI and Anthropic chats can be held in short-term memory for prompt caching for up to one hour. Its documentation also describes possible retention where required by law or to combat malicious use. Uploaded images and files receive separate CSAM scanning; flagged material may be retained and reported. If you explicitly share feedback, that feedback may be stored and reviewed.

Optional chat-history syncing is separate from default handling: DuckDuckGo says synced chats are stored in an end-to-end encrypted format it cannot read. Duck.ai is a multi-provider interface, so the underlying provider and available models can vary. Check DuckDuckGo’s Duck.ai privacy documentation and the current interface for the selected model’s applicable terms.

Claude: ad-free, with distinct training and safety terms
Anthropic states that Claude remains ad-free. For consumer accounts, conversations may be used to improve models when you allow it, when a conversation is flagged for safety review, or through another explicit opt-in. Incognito chats are not used for model improvement, even when the main Model Improvement setting is enabled, according to Anthropic’s training FAQ.

Anthropic says opted-in model-improvement data is retained for five years. It also says sending a thumbs-up or thumbs-down can result in the full related conversation being stored for up to five years. These details are why “I turned training off” should not be treated as a blanket promise that a conversation cannot be reviewed or retained under another policy condition. ChatGPT: current ad choices and privacy controls
OpenAI says it is testing ads in the United States for Free and Go plans. Its ads FAQ describes Plus and Pro as ad-free subscriptions and also describes a free no-ads option with additional limits. The exact options may differ by geography and over time, so confirm what appears in your account. OpenAI says advertisers do not receive chats, history, memories, name, email, precise location, IP address, or sensitive information. - For a general-purpose conversation with the clearest stated default privacy controls: start with Duck.ai, then check which provider handles the selected model and what exceptions apply.
- For Claude’s capabilities without ads: Claude fits, but review Model Improvement and understand that safety review and feedback have separate terms.
- If you want to keep using ChatGPT: check whether your plan or account currently offers ads, choose available privacy controls, and use Temporary Chat when its history and model-improvement behavior fits your purpose.
- For sensitive information: avoid entering passwords, financial account details, medical records, or confidential documents into consumer chat services unless you have independently confirmed that the specific service and plan meet your needs. Anthropic advises caution with highly sensitive information, and OpenAI warns against submitting information you would not want reviewed or used.
A VPN does not prevent a chatbot provider from receiving the text you submit. The privacy-relevant questions are the service’s own handling, your settings, the selected model provider, and what data you choose to send.
