What to Do When Starlink Is Slow, Unstable, or Out During Bad Weather

Bad weather can slow or briefly interrupt Starlink, but it is not the only possible cause. Starlink says moderate to heavy rain, snow, and hail can cause momentary dropouts; interruptions from typical storms should return to normal after the weather passes. Check the Starlink app first, determine whether one device or every device is affected, and inspect the installation only when it is safe.

How bad weather affects Starlink

Starlink says significant weather can attenuate radio signals. Its Help Center states: “Moderate to heavy rain, snow, and hail can cause momentary service dropouts.” Storm systems near ground stations can also affect service; Starlink says its laser-augmented satellite network can route traffic around storm systems to reduce the impact. These measures do not guarantee uninterrupted service.

Starlink says its equipment is designed and tested for a range of weather conditions, but extreme heavy rain or wind may still cause slower speeds or a rare outage. A weather-timed problem is a useful clue, not proof that weather is the cause: obstructions, local Wi-Fi, cables, and service interruptions can produce similar symptoms. Starlink advises retesting after the weather clears rather than expecting a specific recovery time.

Start with the Starlink app

Before moving equipment or replacing a cable, review the app’s alerts and outage history. Starlink’s alert guidance describes outage, recent-interruption, obstruction, and hardware notices. An alert can narrow the investigation, but a recent-interruption notice alone does not identify a single cause; it may reflect extreme weather, a temporary network issue, or obstructions.

Mini Satellite Dish Made for SpaceX Starlink Service – 4th Gen Portable Antenna with Advanced Phase Array Technology – High-Speed Internet Kit for RV, Camping, Remote Work, and Off-Grid Living
  • Bundle Includes: STARLINK - Mini Kit AC Dual Band Wi-Fi System - White
  • FAST SATELLITE INTERNET ANYWHERE: Access high-speed, low-latency internet even in and rural areas using the global Starlink satellite network. Designed by SpaceX, the Starlink Mini Kit provides dependable connectivity without wired infrastructure, making it ideal for travel, camping, work, off-grid cabins, RV setups, and locations with no traditional broadband options.
  • COMPACT AND PORTABLE DESIGN: The Starlink Mini is small enough to carry in a backpack yet powerful enough for daily use. Its portable, all-in-one design includes an integrated Wi-Fi router, DC power input, and rugged housing suitable for on-the-go applications. Whether at a campsite, construction site, or temporary location, Starlink Mini offers quick deployment and reliable performance.
  • EASY TWO-STEP SETUP: Get online in minutes—simply plug in the Mini, point it at the sky, and connect. The kit includes everything needed for installation, including a kickstand, pipe adapter, power cable, and power supply. Use the Starlink app to find a clear sky view, check obstructions, explore mounting options, and manage your Starlink account and hardware settings.
  • BUILT-IN ROUTER WITH WI-FI 5: The Starlink Mini includes an integrated dual-band Wi-Fi 5 router for strong wireless coverage and stable speeds. A built-in ethernet port provides wired connectivity for routers, mesh systems, gaming devices, or network hardware. Average power consumption of 25–40 watts supports efficient operation in off-grid or mobile power setups.

Open the app’s Check for Obstructions tool and review the reported sky view. Trees, buildings, poles, debris, or a recent change in the dish’s position can interfere with its view. If the tool reports obstructions, consider whether a clearer, safely accessible installation location is possible.

Work through the symptoms

What you observe What to check first
One device is slow, but others work normally Compare with another device; check Wi-Fi band, distance from the router, and whether a VPN is enabled.
Every device is slow or offline Check app alerts and outage history, weather, obstructions, cable connections, and the service path.
Problems occur mainly during storms Review alerts and obstruction results, then retest after the weather passes.
Problems happen mainly at busy hours Peak congestion can temporarily slow service; compare performance at other times.
Wi-Fi is weak in part of the home, but service is otherwise available Check router placement, distance, walls, and interference; this points to in-home coverage rather than necessarily a satellite interruption.

If only one device is affected

Compare that device with another one on the same connection. Starlink identifies Wi-Fi band and VPN use as relevant checks. The 2.4 GHz band reaches farther but is slower; 5 GHz is faster near the router. If a VPN is enabled, try a speed test without it if that is appropriate for your privacy and work needs.

Bundle: for STARLINK Gen 3 Standard Satellite Internet Setup – Advanced Dish - Wi-Fi 6 Router + 150FT Extension Cable – High-Speed, Low-Latency Connection
  • Gen 3 Satellite Dish: Third-generation antenna delivers a stronger, more stable signal and faster performance.
  • Wi-Fi 6 Router: Modern router technology supports faster speeds, increased device capacity, and better efficiency.
  • Extra 150FT Cable Included: Extended reach for more flexible installation in large spaces or hard-to-access locations.
  • High-Speed, Low-Latency Internet: Stream HD content, video conference, or work remotely with confidence.
  • Ideal for Rural and Remote Areas: Perfect for homes, cabins, RVs, boats, and off-grid setups where wired internet isn’t available.

If the issue is limited to Wi-Fi coverage

Starlink suggests placing the router centrally and in the open, away from walls, metal, and sources of interference. In a large home or one with thick walls, a mesh node or extender may improve local coverage. It will not fix satellite-signal attenuation, an obstruction, or an area-wide service interruption.

Inspect cables and power safely

Check that connections are seated and look for visible cable damage, kinks, exposed sections, or debris. Starlink recommends its official cables to avoid compatibility problems. Follow the instructions for your equipment, and turn it off or unplug it before handling connections when appropriate for your model. Do not climb onto a roof or handle electrical equipment during unsafe storm conditions.

For a wired device, check the rating printed on the Ethernet cable. Starlink says a cable below Cat5e may limit speeds; Cat5e or higher is relevant only if the setup is wired and the existing cable is below that guidance. Replacing an Ethernet cable cannot repair a satellite-side weather interruption.

Starlink lists a surge protector as optional preparation against unexpected power surges. It is electrical protection, not a way to prevent rain fade, radio-signal attenuation, or local service outages.

Handle snow and ice with care

Starlink says its dishes have a snow-melting feature, but extreme blizzard conditions can exceed what the terminal melts over time. Accumulating snow can still obstruct the dish’s field of view. If you can see snow or ice and can address it safely, follow the instructions for your specific model and clear it gently. Do not climb or scrape equipment in dangerous conditions. Starlink does not provide a universal snow-depth threshold for performance degradation.

Retest, document, and contact support

After the weather passes, retest the connection. If it remains poor in good conditions, gather details that help distinguish a brief storm effect from a continuing fault:

  • Whether one device or all devices are affected.
  • When the problem started, how often it occurs, and how long interruptions last.
  • Weather conditions at the time.
  • App alerts and outage-history entries.
  • The result of Check for Obstructions.
  • Speed-test results and whether the test used Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

If the recommended troubleshooting steps do not resolve the problem, submit a support ticket through the Starlink app. The app’s evidence and your notes can make the issue easier to describe without assuming that weather is the only cause.
