One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchYou can access a computer’s BIOS or UEFI remotely only if it has a preconfigured out-of-band console—such as Intel AMT KVM or a server’s iDRAC—or is connected to a compatible KVM-over-IP device. A normal remote-desktop app cannot reach firmware setup because it depends on the operating system. The key limitation: Intel AMT’s Ctrl+P shortcut for opening MEBx must be used on site; remote AMT KVM does not make that screen remotely accessible. Intel confirms the restriction.
First, distinguish BIOS/UEFI from Intel MEBx
BIOS and UEFI are the computer’s firmware setup interfaces, typically used to change boot order, enable hardware features, or adjust startup settings. Intel MEBx is a separate firmware interface for configuring Intel Active Management Technology (AMT). The two are easy to confuse because both appear before the operating system.

A remote KVM console can provide keyboard, video, and mouse control during startup, allowing an administrator to interact with a supported machine’s BIOS/UEFI. But Intel states that the AMT hotkey Ctrl+P for entering MEBx is available only physically, on site—not through AMT WebUI, MeshCommander, or EMA. Intel Support’s explanation is specific to MEBx; it does not mean that every BIOS/UEFI screen is inaccessible through remote KVM.
Check what remote console your computer supports
Before attempting remote access, identify the exact computer or server model and whether its management feature is present, supported, reachable, and already configured. Remote capability is not something a desktop application can add after the machine becomes inaccessible.

- Intel AMT KVM: A supported and configured AMT system can provide remote keyboard and mouse control and show the display even when the operating system is not running or the system is asleep. Intel’s AMT support guidance and KVM implementation reference describe the capability and prerequisites.
- Server BMC, such as Dell iDRAC: Dell’s iDRAC controller provides independent server management and a virtual console. Availability, setup steps, and console features depend on the server generation and license. Dell’s virtual-console instructions cover the access path.
- External KVM-over-IP: A separate device can relay video and input to a remote operator, but compatibility depends on the computer and the KVM hardware. Verify that it can capture the machine’s video output and send keyboard input early enough in startup.
- No out-of-band console: If the machine has no configured management feature or external KVM, remote desktop software, Wake-on-LAN, or a generic USB adapter alone will not provide access to firmware setup.
Use Intel AMT KVM when it is already configured
AMT KVM is useful for remote BIOS/UEFI interaction only when the target platform supports AMT and its firmware and management settings have been provisioned. Intel’s implementation guidance says KVM must first be enabled in MEBx and the KVM listener enabled before KVM can be enabled remotely. That creates an important catch: if AMT was never set up and nobody can reach the computer locally, remote tools cannot open MEBx to enable it.
- Confirm support and provisioning. Check the computer’s exact model and confirm that AMT and KVM are supported and configured. Do not assume a feature is present based on the processor brand alone.
- Connect through the organization’s AMT management setup. Use the management tool and network route already configured for that device. AMT KVM is an out-of-band console, not a feature that appears automatically in an ordinary remote-desktop session.
- Open the KVM console and restart the system as needed. When the console is active before the operating system loads, use its keyboard and video controls to interact with BIOS/UEFI. The exact interface depends on the management software and environment.
- Do not use AMT KVM as a substitute for entering MEBx. If the task requires Ctrl+P to open Intel MEBx itself, Intel says that step must be performed on site.
For an organization-managed AMT deployment accessed from outside its enterprise network, Intel describes a secure TLS tunnel through a vPro Gateway, also called a Management Presence Server, with environment detection and configuration requirements. It is not automatic public-internet access. See Intel’s AMT Start Here guide for the documented deployment context.

Use Dell iDRAC on a supported PowerEdge server
On a Dell PowerEdge server equipped with iDRAC, an administrator can use its remote virtual console independently of whether the operating system has booted. The iDRAC interface needs a configured IP address reachable from the management system, and the administrator must be able to sign in. Dell notes that virtual-console availability depends on licensing: it is a licensed feature on rack and tower servers and available by default on blade servers. Details vary by iDRAC generation. Follow Dell’s instructions for the applicable generation.

- From an authorized management system, open the iDRAC interface and sign in.
- Check that the server’s iDRAC license and generation support the virtual-console feature you need.
- Launch the virtual console, then restart the server or use its startup controls to enter BIOS/UEFI.
Because iDRAC is a separate management controller, the console can remain available when the operating system is not booted. Dell describes this capability and the management-controller role in its iDRAC overview.

When serial-over-LAN may be enough
Dell iDRAC9 also supports serial-over-LAN (SOL), which carries text-based serial console traffic. Dell documents using SOL to view POST progress and reconfigure BIOS setup when both the BIOS serial connection and iDRAC SOL are configured. This is not graphical KVM, and it will not work as a universal substitute for a virtual console. See Dell’s SOL configuration documentation.
When built-in management is unavailable
If the machine has no configured AMT or server management controller, a compatible external IP KVM may provide the missing pre-OS keyboard-and-video path. Choose one only after checking the target hardware and the KVM’s documentation; compatibility is not universal.

Choose the right access path
| Option | Works before the OS starts? | Must be set up in advance? | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intel AMT KVM | Yes, on supported and configured systems | Yes; KVM and its listener must be enabled | Ctrl+P to enter MEBx is physically available only, according to Intel Support |
| Dell iDRAC virtual console | Yes, on supported PowerEdge systems | iDRAC must be configured and reachable; console access depends on generation and licensing | Feature availability and steps vary by server generation |
| Dell iDRAC serial-over-LAN | Can provide text console access to POST and BIOS setup when configured | Yes; BIOS serial connection and iDRAC SOL must be configured | Text-based serial console, not graphical KVM |
| External IP KVM | Potentially, if the hardware supports the required video and startup input | Typically requires hardware installation and setup | Compatibility and power-control capabilities vary; verify the specific device |
| Ordinary remote desktop | No; it operates through the OS | OS and remote-access software must be running | Does not provide a pre-OS firmware console |
Keep the management path secure
Remote management interfaces can provide control beyond the operating system, so restrict access to authorized administrators and use the vendor’s supported security and firmware guidance for the exact system. Intel’s documented off-network AMT approach uses a TLS tunnel through an organization-managed vPro Gateway/Management Presence Server with environment detection configured. Do not expose an unauthenticated management interface directly to the public internet.
