If Android says your SD card is corrupted or asks you to format it, do not format it yet. Formatting permanently deletes data, and recovery is not guaranteed. First check for another copy, then find out whether the card is portable or adopted storage and whether the phone or a computer can read it.
What to do first: protect the data
- Decline any prompt to format the card on your phone or computer. Google warns that formatting permanently deletes data in its SD card setup instructions; Samsung also says formatting erases the card.
- Do not save new files to the card, install recovery software onto it, or save recovered files back to it. New writes can overwrite data that might otherwise be recoverable.
- If the card is intermittently detected, disconnects, or shows signs of physical damage, avoid repeated attempts. For irreplaceable files, seek specialist assessment before further use.
Check whether a backup already exists
Before attempting recovery, check the Google Account backup and Google Photos from another device or a web session. Google says device backup includes selected data, while photos and videos depend on Google Photos backup settings. It does not say that every file stored on an SD card is included, so confirm whether the missing items are actually present.

Find out whether Android detects the card
Check the phone’s storage settings, then check the file manager. Menu names differ among Android versions and manufacturers, but storage settings may show an inserted card even when it does not appear in Files.

- Settings does not show the card: Follow your phone’s instructions for powering down before removing it. Reseat the card and check for debris or visible damage. If possible, test it in another compatible device. Samsung lists reseating and testing in another device among its troubleshooting steps.
- Settings shows the card, but Files by Google does not: The card may be formatted as internal (adopted) storage rather than portable storage. Google explains that this storage mode can account for a card being visible in Settings but absent from Files.
- A format prompt appears: Cancel it. A prompt is not evidence that formatting will restore the files.
Identify portable versus adopted storage
This distinction determines whether removing the card and using a computer is a reasonable next step.

If the card was adopted, keep it with its original working phone. Do not reset the phone or format the card as a recovery experiment. Check model-specific support before taking any action that could erase or disconnect the encrypted storage.
Recover a readable portable card with a computer
If the card is portable and stable enough to read, connect it to a computer with a compatible USB microSD card reader. CGSecurity, the publisher of PhotoRec, specifically recommends a USB card reader for a phone memory card. A reader provides a connection; it does not repair a damaged card.

- Remove the portable card only as directed by the phone manufacturer, then connect it to the computer using the reader.
- If the computer asks to format or initialize the card, cancel the prompt.
- Use recovery software that can scan the card without writing to it. PhotoRec says it uses read-only access to handle the drive or memory card being scanned.
- Save recovered files to a different drive, such as the computer’s internal storage or another external drive—not to the SD card being recovered.
- Review the recovered files on the destination drive. PhotoRec uses file signatures to carve data, so recovered files may not retain their original names or folder structure, and complete recovery is not assured.
When to stop and get help
Recovery depends on what remains readable and whether the data has been overwritten. Physical damage, repeated disconnections, encryption, and new writes can all limit what can be recovered. If the card is unstable or the contents are especially valuable, stop trying different devices and software and seek specialist assessment. No recovery method can promise success.

If you do recover the files, keep a copy on another device before deciding whether to reuse or replace the card. Replace a malfunctioning card only after anything recoverable has been copied or you have confirmed that a backup contains what you need.
