AAV vs. ACV: How the Marine Corps’ Amphibious Vehicles Compare (2026 Update)

Short answer: The AAV is the Marine Corps’ legacy tracked amphibious vehicle, while the ACV is its eight-wheeled replacement. Both are intended to move Marines from ship to shore, but the ACV is designed to continue as the infantry battalion’s primary tactical mobility platform once ashore, with purpose-built command, recovery and direct-fire variants.

The transition is well underway but not complete across every inventory. The ACV reached initial operational capability in 2020, has deployed overseas for exercises, and is replacing AAVs through a smaller procurement plan than originally envisioned. At the same time, surf restrictions introduced after two 2022 training accidents show that waterborne employment remains dependent on sea conditions, procedures and crew proficiency.

What the AAV and ACV are

The Amphibious Assault Vehicle, commonly called the AAV-7A1 family, is the older tracked platform that entered Marine Corps service in 1972. Its enduring job has been to carry Marines and equipment from amphibious ships through the water and onto a beach. The design represents the Marine Corps’ earlier model of a tracked assault vehicle that could provide protected transport during an amphibious landing.

The Amphibious Combat Vehicle, or ACV, is the next-generation platform intended to replace the AAV. It uses eight wheels rather than tracks and is described by the Marine Corps as the primary tactical mobility platform for Marine infantry both at sea and ashore. That wording matters: the ACV is not only a ship-to-shore shuttle. It is intended to remain useful after landing, moving with the infantry battalion and supporting its operations on land.

The Congressional Research Service (CRS) describes the ACV as the Corps’ next-generation vehicle designed to move Marines from ship to shore. The Marine Corps’ Force Design material identifies it as the AAV replacement. In practical terms, the comparison is therefore between a fielded legacy family and a newer system being introduced to perform the same central amphibious mission while adding a broader set of land and support roles.

At-a-glance comparison

Several specifications readers often seek—speed, combat weight, dimensions, range, armor thickness, fuel consumption and unit cost—were not established in the current authoritative material used for this comparison. Treating an unverified number as a direct AAV-versus-ACV fact would create a false sense of precision.

Tracked AAV versus wheeled ACV: why the mobility concept changed

The AAV’s tracked approach

Tracks distribute a vehicle’s weight over a larger contact area and are a familiar solution for vehicles expected to cross soft ground, beaches and broken terrain. The AAV’s long service life reflects how well that basic concept supported Marine amphibious operations. Its identity, however, is tied to an older force structure in which the amphibious vehicle’s central task was protected movement from ship to shore.

The ACV’s eight-wheel layout

The ACV replaces the track system with eight wheels and is intended to serve as a tactical mobility platform beyond the beach. The design change is not simply a swap of one running gear for another. It accompanies a different employment concept: the vehicle must connect the amphibious assault phase with sustained infantry operations ashore, while also supporting command, recovery and direct-fire missions through dedicated variants.

A wheeled layout does not eliminate the need for careful route selection, maintenance or environmental limits. Nor does the existence of wheels by itself establish a particular speed, range or cross-country advantage. Those numerical comparisons require controlled, current specifications that are not provided here. What can be stated from the program’s stated role is that the ACV is being fielded as a broader tactical system rather than as a one-purpose transport.

Troop capacity and the ACV variant family

ACV-P: the personnel carrier

The ACV-P is the baseline personnel version. It carries a crew of three and 13 embarked Marines, along with two days of combat equipment and supplies. The stated load is therefore more than a seat count: it includes the equipment and sustainment needed for the vehicle’s initial combat employment after landing.

ACV-C: command and control

The Command-and-Control variant is intended to provide a mobile command post for the formation. Its purpose is to support leaders and communications rather than maximize the number of embarked riflemen. The available program description identifies the mission, but does not provide a separate crew, passenger or equipment figure for ACV-C.

ACV-R: recovery

The Recovery variant is intended to recover or assist disabled vehicles. A recovery vehicle helps an amphibious unit keep moving when a platform suffers a mechanical failure, becomes immobilized or needs assistance after an obstacle or landing incident. The program description does not state a recovery capacity, winch rating or other engineering specification, so those details should not be inferred.

ACV-30: direct fire support

The ACV-30 adds a stabilized medium-caliber remote turret and is intended to provide organic direct fire support for infantry. A remote turret lets the weapon be operated from within the protected vehicle rather than requiring a gunner to occupy an exposed position. The available description establishes the 30-mm caliber and stabilized remote-turret arrangement; it does not establish ammunition load, engagement range or armor-piercing performance.

What the AAV comparison can—and cannot—say

The AAV-7A1 family’s broad role as an amphibious troop and equipment carrier is clear. The authoritative material used for this article does not supply a current, directly comparable AAV personnel figure or a matching list of modern mission variants. That is why the table leaves those cells unquantified instead of presenting legacy figures from an unknown configuration or date.

How the vehicles are expected to be used

Ship to shore

Both vehicle families are associated with the classic amphibious movement from a ship toward a beach. The vehicle carries Marines while exposed to the hazards of the water crossing and then transitions to land movement. The ACV’s replacement role does not remove that amphibious requirement; it is the starting point for the vehicle’s mission.

Shore to shore and movement ashore

The ACV is also intended for tactical water mobility between coastal positions and for continued movement with infantry after landing. Its stated role as the primary tactical mobility platform at sea and ashore means commanders are expected to use it as part of the battalion’s maneuver scheme, not park it once troops reach the beach.

Protection and organic support

The program’s three broad capability goals are protected mobility, tactical water mobility and organic direct fire support. Protected mobility means transporting Marines in a vehicle designed to reduce their exposure compared with movement in the open. Organic support means the unit can bring its own command, recovery and direct-fire functions rather than depending entirely on separate formations for every problem.

These terms describe intended capabilities, not a guarantee that the vehicle is safe in every sea state or invulnerable to every threat. Employment still depends on mission planning, crew actions, maintenance and the conditions in which the vehicle is operated.

What the 2022 surf accidents revealed

On July 19, 2022, two ACVs were involved in high-surf training accidents. According to CRS’s account of Marine reporting, one vehicle tipped onto its side in the surf zone and another became disabled. Marines in both vehicles conducted their immediate-action drills and returned safely to shore.

The Marine Corps suspended amphibious operations while it investigated and reviewed procedures. Operations resumed on September 23, 2022, with an interim limit of four feet of significant breaker height. Significant breaker height is a measure of the surf environment, not a statement that the vehicle is only four feet tall or that it can operate in exactly four feet of water. It is an operational sea-state threshold used to control exposure to breaking waves.

The restriction illustrates an important difference between a vehicle’s theoretical capability and its authorized employment. Amphibious vehicles face interacting risks from wave height, wave shape, currents, launch and recovery procedures, visibility, crew workload and the condition of the vehicle. A platform can be useful and fielded while still requiring a conservative envelope for training and operations.

Marine Corps leadership, as recorded by CRS in January 2025, summarized the principle this way: “There’s no vehicle that is inherently safe or unsafe. You have to operate within its parameters.” That statement is a useful way to interpret the ACV’s surf limits. The limit is not proof that the ACV cannot perform amphibious missions; it is evidence that those missions are governed by defined environmental boundaries and risk controls.

Operational status: fielded, deployed and still being refined

Initial operational capability

The ACV achieved initial operational capability in November 2020. That milestone means the Marine Corps had accepted enough trained personnel, equipment and support to begin an operational capability; it does not mean every planned vehicle or variant had already replaced every AAV.

Overseas employment

CRS reported the ACV’s first overseas operational deployment during Exercise Balikatan 24 in the Philippines in May 2024. An exercise deployment is not the same as combat use, but it demonstrates that the vehicle had moved beyond domestic testing and was being integrated into a major allied training environment.

Acquisition objective and reductions

The current planned acquisition objective is 632 ACVs. CRS reported that this was reduced from an earlier objective of 1,122 vehicles under Force Design modernization. CRS also reported procurement reductions totaling 48 vehicles across fiscal years 2025 and 2026, citing fiscal and pricing pressures.

The lower objective affects the scale and pace of replacement, not the identity of the program. The ACV remains the designated AAV replacement, but a smaller fleet means planners must manage transition timing, variant mix and the continued disposition of legacy vehicles carefully.

Is the AAV still in Marine Corps service?

Yes, the transition should not be described as an instantaneous fleet-wide retirement. Marine Forces Reserve reported retiring its final active AAV at a ceremony on August 9, 2026. That is a significant reserve milestone, but it does not establish that every AAV in every Marine Corps inventory had already been retired on that date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practical terms, the most accurate description is that AAVs are being phased out as ACVs arrive and units convert, with retirement status varying by component, unit and timing. A statement that “the AAV is gone” is broader than the evidence supports; a statement that “the AAV is the future” is equally wrong because the Marine Corps has designated the ACV as its replacement.

What is genuinely different for Marines and commanders?

Decision question AAV implication ACV implication
How does the vehicle move? Tracked amphibious mobility built around the legacy AAV family Eight-wheeled mobility intended to continue from the water into battalion operations ashore
What does the unit receive? A legacy carrier role, with current comparable variant details not stated A family of personnel, command, recovery and 30-mm direct-fire variants
How is infantry supported? Primary emphasis remains protected transport from ship to shore Protected mobility is paired with tactical water mobility and an organic direct-fire option through ACV-30
How should commanders plan water operations? Current comparable surf authorization was not stated Plan within the interim four-foot significant-breaker-height limit and applicable training guidance
What does modernization mean? Legacy platform being retired as units transition Fielded replacement whose final fleet size and procurement pace have been reduced

The most consequential change is therefore organizational as well as mechanical. The ACV program treats amphibious vehicles as a family of complementary capabilities: personnel transport, command and control, recovery and direct fire. That structure is intended to let an infantry battalion retain more of its mobility and support functions within the amphibious vehicle fleet.

Why common specification comparisons can mislead

Readers often look for a single table of top speed, water speed, combat weight, armor, range and price. Those figures are useful only when they refer to the same configuration, test method, production standard and date. An ACV-P cannot automatically be compared with an unspecified AAV variant, and a published design maximum is not necessarily an authorized operational value in surf.

The current authoritative material does not provide directly comparable values for AAV and ACV speed, weight, dimensions, range, armor thickness, fuel consumption or unit cost. The responsible conclusion is not that the vehicles are identical in those areas; it is that a defensible side-by-side number is not established here. Readers should treat online tables that present exact figures without identifying vehicle variant and source date with caution.

Bottom line

The AAV is the Marine Corps’ long-serving tracked amphibious carrier, introduced in 1972. The ACV is the eight-wheeled replacement, operational since 2020, designed to carry Marines from ship to shore and remain with the infantry battalion as a protected tactical mobility platform. Its planned family includes personnel, command-and-control, recovery and 30-mm direct-fire variants.

The replacement is real but measured: the current objective is 632 vehicles rather than 1,122, procurement has been reduced by 48 vehicles across fiscal years 2025 and 2026, and reserve AAV retirement reached a milestone in August 2026 without proving universal retirement. The 2022 accidents and subsequent four-foot significant-breaker-height limit also show that ACV amphibious operations depend on environmental limits and disciplined procedures. In short, the ACV is the Marine Corps’ future amphibious vehicle, but it is being introduced through a managed transition rather than a simple overnight swap.
