Apple’s A19 Pro is the newer, higher-tier chip in iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max; standard A18 powers iPhone 16. Geekbench’s current device listings show higher results for iPhone 17 Pro, but they compare submitted phone tests—not the chips in identical, controlled conditions. Apple’s sustained-performance claim also includes the iPhone 17 Pro’s vapor chamber and refers to the previous Pro generation, not standard A18.
Which chips and phones are being compared?
This comparison is between A19 Pro in iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, and standard A18 in iPhone 16. It is not a comparison with A18 Pro, which is a separate chip used in iPhone 16 Pro. Keeping those tiers distinct matters: figures for A18 Pro should not be presented as A18 specifications or results.

A19 Pro vs A18 specifications
| Specification | A19 Pro | Standard A18 comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Phone association | iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, per Apple | iPhone 16, identified by Geekbench |
| CPU | 6-core CPU, per Apple | Apple’s cited A19 Pro announcement does not provide a matched A18 CPU specification |
| GPU | 6-core GPU; Apple says each GPU core has a Neural Accelerator | Do not substitute the 5-core GPU specification for standard A19 in iPhone 17; it is a different chip |
| Neural Engine | 16-core Neural Engine, per Apple | A matched standard-A18 throughput comparison is not established in the cited source |
| Memory | Apple says A19 Pro has more memory than A18 Pro | That statement compares A19 Pro with A18 Pro, not standard A18 |
| Process, maximum clock, and memory bandwidth | Not stated in Apple’s cited announcement | Not stated in Apple’s cited announcement |
The specification evidence supports a description of A19 Pro’s core counts and Neural Accelerators, but not a complete official side-by-side against standard A18. In particular, it does not establish comparable process-node, clock-speed, bandwidth, or Neural Engine throughput figures. Avoid treating missing values as evidence that the chips are identical or different on those measures.

What do the A19 Pro vs A18 benchmarks show?
Geekbench Browser’s device listings show higher scores for iPhone 17 Pro than iPhone 16. These are database results associated with whole devices, not an isolated chip test. Submissions can differ in operating system, configuration, software version, and test conditions, and the live listings can change.
| Geekbench comparison | iPhone 17 Pro (A19 Pro) | iPhone 16 (A18) | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPU device-listing score | 8,775 | 7,585 | Geekbench Browser listings captured in 2026; device-level results, not a controlled chip-only comparison |
| GPU Compute | 47,316 | 28,643 | Geekbench Browser comparison captured in 2026; displayed difference is 60.5%, with recorded Geekbench versions 6.7.0 and 6.6.0, respectively |
The CPU and Compute rows are different tests and should not be combined into one overall performance uplift. The GPU Compute comparison is especially narrow because it uses different Geekbench versions and differing system conditions. Its displayed 60.5% difference describes that database comparison, not a universal A19 Pro-over-A18 gain in graphics or application performance.

How to read Apple’s sustained-performance claim
Apple says that, when A19 Pro is paired with the iPhone 17 Pro vapor chamber, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max can deliver “up to 40 percent better sustained performance than the previous generation.” This is Apple’s 2025 vendor claim about sustained performance of the phone system, including its cooling design. The comparison is framed against the previous Pro generation; it is not a direct benchmark of A19 Pro against standard A18.
Sustained performance concerns how a device maintains performance over time under demanding workloads, rather than a single peak benchmark score. The claim therefore should not be used to recast the Geekbench device scores as a controlled long-duration test.

What this comparison can—and cannot—tell you
- For the tier question: A19 Pro belongs to Apple’s Pro phone tier, while A18 is the standard chip in iPhone 16.
- For the benchmark question: the cited Geekbench listings favor iPhone 17 Pro in both the CPU listing and GPU Compute comparison, but do not isolate the silicon under identical conditions.
- For architecture: Apple documents a 6-core CPU, 6-core GPU, per-core Neural Accelerators, and 16-core Neural Engine for A19 Pro. Those features alone do not establish a particular real-world speed multiplier over standard A18.
- For an upgrade decision: these scores are evidence of differences between the listed phone results, not a guarantee of the improvement in a specific app, game, or AI task. Device cooling, software, and workload affect what users experience.
