Android Auto can handle calls, messages, directions and music by voice, so you can do many common tasks without reaching for the display. In a week of hands-free driving, I found that changing how I started those tasks made the screen feel less necessary. That is a personal preference, not proof that voice control is distraction-free or right for every driver.
What you can do hands-free in Android Auto
In a compatible car, you can start a voice request by saying “Hey Google,” using the Android Auto microphone control, or pressing and holding the steering-wheel voice-command button. Available tasks include making calls, reading or sending messages, getting directions and playing music. The exact controls and services depend on your phone, car and available assistant.

Voice is most useful when you know what you want to do: call a contact, ask for a route, hear a message or choose music. It is less dependable as a reason to keep driving through a complicated request. If you need to look at the screen or sort out a response, wait until you can safely pull over and park.
Starting a request
- “Hey Google”: Speak the wake phrase, then make a request if voice activation is available on your device.
- Steering-wheel button: Press and hold the compatible car’s voice-command button to start listening.
- On-screen microphone: Tap the microphone control in Android Auto. This requires touching the display, so use another available control if your goal is to avoid reaching for it.
Google Assistant and Gemini
Google says Gemini is replacing Google Assistant on most mobile devices, but the Android Auto transition is rolling out over time. Which assistant you see may depend on your device, account, language, territory and rollout status; do not assume every car or phone has Gemini in Android Auto. Google’s current guidance describes speaking with Gemini or Google Assistant to control Android Auto in compatible cars. Google’s Android Auto voice-control help explains the available approach.

Choose wired or wireless Android Auto
Most compatible cars and aftermarket stereos connect to Android Auto when you plug a phone in with USB. Wireless Android Auto is an option only when the phone and vehicle both support it; initial wireless pairing uses Bluetooth. Check the compatibility of your specific phone and car rather than assuming that support for wired Android Auto also means wireless support.
| Setup | What it requires | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Wired | A compatible phone, a vehicle or stereo that supports Android Auto, and a USB connection. | Confirm the car’s USB port and the cable connector match, and that the vehicle supports wired Android Auto. |
| Wireless | A compatible phone and a vehicle that supports wireless Android Auto; pairing uses Bluetooth. | Confirm wireless support for both devices. A cable may not be needed for the Android Auto connection. |
Google says Android 10 and later phones do not need a separate Android Auto app download. Availability and compatibility can still vary by region, device and vehicle maker. See Google’s Android Auto overview for setup and compatibility guidance.

Hands-free is not the same as distraction-free
Android Auto uses a simplified interface with large icons and minimal text. Google says it also applies safety lockouts, including blocking message typing while the car is moving and limiting scrolling through large lists. These measures restrict some interactions; they do not guarantee that a driver will remain attentive. Speaking to an assistant can still divert attention from driving.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration defines distracted driving as any activity that diverts attention from driving, including interacting with navigation or entertainment systems. In the United States, NHTSA reported 3,208 people killed and 315,167 injured in crashes involving distracted drivers in 2024. Those figures are general U.S. crash context, not evidence about Android Auto’s effect. NHTSA advises drivers who need to text to pull over to a safe location and park before reading or sending a message. See NHTSA’s distracted-driving guidance and its 2024 figures published in 2025.

Law depends on where you drive. In the United States, states set distracted-driving laws; consult the current rules for your state. In the UK, drivers must not hold and use a phone while driving, including when stopped in traffic, and must remain in control of the vehicle. Check the current UK government phone-use rules if driving there. Neither country’s rules should be treated as a substitute for checking local law elsewhere.
Quick Recap
Make the switch without forcing it
- Check compatibility: Verify that your phone and car or stereo support Android Auto, and check separately for wireless support if you want to avoid a cable.
- Connect the phone: Use USB for a wired connection, or follow the vehicle’s Bluetooth pairing process if both devices support wireless Android Auto.
- Learn one voice control: Try the wake phrase or steering-wheel button while safely parked so you know how to start a request without searching for an on-screen control.
- Keep requests simple: Use voice for routine calls, messages, directions and media. If a request becomes distracting or needs visual attention, stop and park safely before continuing.
