An accepted WebSocket handshake does not authorize a client to join every channel, room, topic, or resource it later names. Authenticate the connection, then authorize each subscription against the authenticated user and the specific resource before registering it or sending protected data.
Why a successful handshake is not enough
WebSocket defines a communication transport and its opening handshake; it does not define the application’s access policy for messages sent over the connection. RFC 6455 allows a server to use authentication mechanisms available to an HTTP server, but it does not establish which application resources a connected user may access. RFC 6455

That means a client’s subscribe message is still a request for access. A valid session, an accepted connection, or a previously approved subscription does not by itself authorize a new resource identifier. OWASP likewise states that WebSockets do not provide application authorization. OWASP WebSocket Security Cheat Sheet

Authorize each subscription before registering it
- Authenticate the connection or session. Use the application’s chosen authentication mechanism and establish the principal associated with the socket.
- Validate the subscribe message. Parse the message, check its shape and type, and validate the requested resource identifier. Treat all client-supplied values as untrusted.
- Check permission for that resource. Evaluate the authenticated principal’s access to the specific user, tenant, room, topic, or other resource on every subscription request.
- Make the decision before adding the socket or sending data. Reject unauthorized requests before registering the connection as a subscriber or emitting protected events.
- Handle changing access. Revoke subscriptions or re-check permissions when a session expires or the user’s access changes.
The authorization source, resource scope, decision point, and revocation behavior depend on the application. Whatever policy it uses, the check must apply to the resource named in each request—not merely to the socket as a whole.

Keep connection security and resource authorization distinct
Authenticate the connection
RFC 6455 does not prescribe one client-authentication mechanism. A server can use mechanisms available to a generic HTTP server, such as cookies, HTTP authentication, or TLS authentication. For a wss connection, TLS provides confidentiality and integrity in transit; it does not decide which user may subscribe to a resource. RFC 6455
Validate browser origins
Browsers send cookies with WebSocket handshakes, which can expose a cookie-authenticated application to Cross-Site WebSocket Hijacking if it accepts connections initiated by an untrusted site. OWASP recommends checking the handshake’s Origin against an explicit allowlist. Origin validation helps control which browser origins may open a connection; it is not a substitute for checking a principal’s permission to access a particular resource. OWASP WebSocket Security Cheat Sheet
Use secure transport and appropriate session handling
Use WSS to protect WebSocket traffic in transit. OWASP’s Application Security Verification Standard also recommends WSS, checking handshake origins against allowed origins, and using dedicated WebSocket session tokens when ordinary session management cannot be used. Such tokens should be obtained or validated through the previously authenticated HTTPS session. OWASP Application Security Verification Standard

A test that proves a user can connect says nothing about whether that user can subscribe to the right resources. OWASP’s Web Security Testing Guide says, “WebSockets do not handle authorization, normal black-box authorization tests should be carried out.” It recommends testing WebSocket authorization like other access controls, including replaying and fuzzing messages. OWASP Web Security Testing Guide: Testing WebSockets
- Attempt to subscribe to another user’s private channel.
- Try a tenant or room the authenticated principal does not belong to.
- Replay a subscription request after access has been revoked.
- Alter resource identifiers and message fields to test whether the server relies on client-controlled values.
- Verify that rejected requests do not register the socket or deliver protected events.
Run these checks with identities that have different permissions, and inspect both the server’s decision and the events received by the client. The security outcome is not simply an error response: unauthorized clients must not gain membership or receive protected data.
