The “jQuery tattoo station” in Bytes #114 was a joke about an imagined 2011-themed party for Bootstrap’s eleventh birthday—not a real tattoo guide or product recommendation. The August 22, 2022 issue used that gag to set up a short history of Bootstrap, alongside software news and sponsored tool descriptions that should be read as snapshots from that date.
Why was there a jQuery tattoo station?
Bytes #114 imagined celebrating Bootstrap’s eleventh birthday with a party themed around 2011, the year Bootstrap was open-sourced. A jQuery tattoo station was one of the deliberately era-specific party jokes. The issue does not describe an actual event or offer instructions for tattooing; the phrase is a humorous nod to the web-development culture of that period.
The issue’s account says Mark Otto and Jacob Thornton started Bootstrap to help teams at Twitter build internal tools, then open-sourced it in August 2011. It recounts later changes to the project, including responsive design, a move from Less to Sass, Flexbox support, and the eventual removal of jQuery dependencies. These are historical points in the newsletter’s 2022 telling, not a current technical comparison.

What else did issue #114 cover?
PlanetScale’s JavaScript serverless driver
The issue described a PlanetScale JavaScript driver intended to make JavaScript access possible without the raw TCP connection previously required. It highlighted rebuilt HTTP infrastructure, global routing, the Fetch API, and query sanitization, and said the driver was in beta at the time. Those details describe the product as Bytes presented it on August 22, 2022; they do not establish its present features or status.
Sponsored sections: BugHerd and Sleuth
In a sponsored section, Bytes described BugHerd as a way to pin website feedback to page elements and collect context such as the URL, browser, operating system, and screen resolution, then organize feedback to track fixes. The issue said more than 10,000 companies used it; that is a claim made in the 2022 newsletter, not a current user count or an independent evaluation.
A separate sponsored quiz section presented Sleuth as software for tracking and improving engineering efficiency. The issue provides no independent product assessment, so its description should not be treated as a comparative verdict.
Other developer topics
The issue also pointed readers to items about the CSS :has() parent selector, a Markdown language server for Visual Studio Code, authentication workflows, serverless databases, and other JavaScript-related topics. It does not develop these into full tutorials or establish their current status.

How to read the issue today
Bytes #114 is best understood as a dated newsletter: its historical Bootstrap account and its descriptions of software reflect what the issue said in August 2022. For example, its footer reported 187,179 developers receiving Bytes weekly for free, while its BugHerd sponsorship cited more than 10,000 companies. Both are figures stated in the issue at that time, not verified current totals.
