Why startup breakpoints matter
A breakpoint in code that runs immediately when a page loads is useful only if the debugger is ready in time. The author describes a startup-breakpoint sequence in which the browser connection is established and breakpoints are configured before the app is loaded. The current Marketplace listing makes that sequence more concrete: its example launch configuration specifies a url; the extension starts Chrome without loading the app, connects the debugger, sets breakpoints, and then navigates to that URL. The listing’s launch example and requirements are the practical reference for trying this workflow.

Microsoft defines DAP as the abstract protocol for communication between a development tool, such as an editor or IDE, and a debugger. Microsoft’s DAP documentation explains that role. The CloudIDEaaS article and listing describe the adapter’s DAP-to-CDP design; this architecture should be understood as the project’s stated approach, not as an independently inspected implementation.
What you need to try it—and where it may not fit
- Browser: The Marketplace listing requires Chrome.
- Platform: The listing says the initial release is intended for 64-bit Windows. It does not establish support for other platforms.
- Configuration: The documented launch example includes a
url. The F5 goal therefore does not mean every project is configuration-free. - Project shape: The intended use is relatively straightforward browser applications. The listing warns that advanced source-map and bundled-application cases may need more support.
- Multiple targets: The listing flags debugging across multiple targets, such as workers or tabs, as an area that may need more support.
- Advanced debugger operations: The publisher lists reverse debugging, instruction breakpoints, data breakpoints, and disassembly among features not provided.
Those limitations come from the publisher’s listing, not from comparative testing. They matter if your work depends on advanced source maps, several browser execution targets, or low-level debugger features.

How it differs from VS Code’s built-in JavaScript debugger
VS Code already includes Microsoft’s JavaScript debugger, and Microsoft documents support for Chrome. The js-debug repository README and its Marketplace listing describe that existing capability. CloudIDEaaS is therefore not filling a gap where VS Code otherwise cannot debug browser JavaScript.

The useful distinction is narrower than “new debugger versus no debugger”: the author is trying to make one browser-debugging path feel simpler for projects that do not need a modern front-end toolchain. Whether that workflow is preferable depends on your project and the configuration you need; the available sources do not establish that it is faster or more capable than js-debug.

Who should consider this workflow?
- It may suit you if you work on a small or traditional browser project, want to launch Chrome from VS Code, and value a guided setup with breakpoints ready before the page loads.
- Check the listing carefully if you need support beyond Chrome or do not use Windows x64, because those are the browser and initial platform qualifications it states.
- Look closely at your debugging needs if your app relies on advanced source maps, bundled code, workers, multiple tabs, or the advanced features the listing says are unavailable.
- Do not assume you need another debugger merely to debug JavaScript in Chrome from VS Code: Microsoft’s js-debug already supports that use case.
