To teach yourself cloud engineering, build core IT skills first, choose one cloud provider, follow its role-based learning path, and practice by deploying real resources. Then use certification objectives as optional study structure and deepen the skills your target role requires. There is no universally best provider or reliable one-size-fits-all timeline to job readiness.
1. Build the technical foundations
Cloud services are easier to understand when you can reason about the systems underneath them. Start with cloud concepts, basic networking, Linux, and programming or scripting. Google Cloud’s career guidance identifies programming, networking, basic Linux skills, and deploying what you build as useful areas for a cloud career project: How to begin building a cloud career.

- Cloud concepts: Learn what cloud services provide and how cloud resources are deployed and managed.
- Networking: Build enough grounding to understand how systems communicate and how cloud resources connect.
- Linux: Become comfortable with basic command-line use and working with a Linux system.
- Programming or scripting: Learn to write and understand small programs or scripts that support technical work.
You do not need to master every subject before opening a cloud console. Use the foundations as a base, then strengthen them as projects expose gaps.
2. Choose one cloud provider first
Start with AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud—not all three at once. Choose based on the role or project you want to pursue, the platform used by an employer or school you already know, and the official learning route and labs you can access. The available learning resources do not establish a universal winner or a current ranking by job demand.
#1 Best Overall
| Provider | What its official resources offer | Useful starting point |
|---|---|---|
| AWS | Self-paced digital training and role- or domain-based learning plans | AWS Training and Certification |
| Azure | Beginner material covering cloud concepts, Azure architecture and services, and management and governance | Training for Azure |
| Google Cloud | Certification learning paths with on-demand courses and labs | Google Cloud certifications |
Provider catalogues can change, so use these live official pages to find the current path rather than relying on a fixed course list. Once you have a foundation in one platform, you can decide whether your goals call for learning another.
3. Follow a path tied to a role
Use your chosen provider’s official learning catalogue to move from introductory concepts toward the services and tasks relevant to your intended role. A role-based path gives your study a direction; it is more useful at the outset than trying to learn every service in a provider’s catalogue.
Rank #2
- Identify a target: Pick a cloud role or a project type that gives your learning a practical focus.
- Select the matching official path: Use the provider’s training or certification catalogue to find relevant courses, modules, and labs.
- Study concepts alongside services: Learn what a service does and how it fits into the broader cloud environment, rather than memorizing names alone.
- Adjust as you practice: When a deployment reveals a gap in networking, Linux, scripting, or cloud concepts, return to that foundation and fill it.
4. Learn by deploying and managing resources
Hands-on practice is essential to turning concepts into usable skills. Work through provider labs or tutorials, and build small projects that require you to deploy and manage cloud resources. Keep the scope manageable enough that you can explain what you created and why.
- Use the official learning path’s practice activities where available.
- Deploy a small, understandable project and examine how its cloud resources fit together.
- Practice managing the resources you create, not just following the initial deployment steps.
- Learn to clean up resources when finished so that a practice environment does not remain deployed unnecessarily.
Once you can explain the infrastructure you are changing, add infrastructure as code. HashiCorp’s tutorials include creating, managing, and destroying Terraform infrastructure on AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud: HashiCorp Tutorials. Treat Terraform as a way to manage infrastructure you understand, not as a substitute for learning what that infrastructure does.

5. Use certification material as a study aid
Certification is optional structure, not a guarantee of job readiness or employment. If an exam matches your goal, use its official guide to see the target candidate description, exam outline, and services in scope. AWS publishes exam guides, while Google Cloud provides learning paths for certifications and recommends reviewing the relevant exam guide.
- AWS Certification Exam Guides outline exam topics and in-scope services.
- Google Cloud certifications links certifications to learning paths.
- Microsoft Learn’s Azure training catalogue includes learning paths and practice assessments: Training for Azure.
Use exam objectives to check coverage and identify gaps. Pair that study with hands-on deployments so you can apply the concepts rather than relying on exam preparation alone.

6. Extend the roadmap for your target role
After learning the foundations and one provider, deepen the areas your chosen role calls for. The right next step depends on the work you want to do; a second cloud, Kubernetes, or any particular certification is not a universal requirement for every cloud engineering learner. Revisit role descriptions and the provider’s current learning catalogue to choose a focused next skill.

There is no well-supported general timeline. The time depends on your previous experience, how much time you can study, the role you are targeting, your location, and hiring conditions. A course completion or certification by itself does not establish that you are ready for a particular job.
