Use the first month to build Python and machine-learning foundations, the middle four weeks to understand neural networks and generative AI, and the final month to evaluate, deploy, and publish one useful application.
The plan below is designed for a beginner who can study consistently and wants evidence of ability rather than a collection of certificates. Each week ends with a small artifact: a notebook, experiment, test report, or product increment. By week 12, you should have a working capstone, public code, documented limitations, and a short demonstration.

What you need before week 1
You do not need an expensive computer, a formal computer-science degree, or paid model access to begin. You do need a reliable way to run Python notebooks, save your work, and read basic technical documentation. A local Python installation or a hosted notebook is sufficient for the early weeks; cloud services become optional when you reach deployment exercises.
Set a realistic weekly rhythm
Choose a repeatable study block rather than trying to binge an entire course. A useful pattern is three learning sessions, one practice session, and a short review at the end of each week. Keep a learning log with the date, concept studied, code completed, unexpected result, and next question. The log becomes evidence of progress and makes it easier to resume after a missed session.

Pick one target use case
Choose a problem small enough to finish in two weeks: classifying support messages, forecasting a simple business measure, searching a set of documents, extracting fields from forms, or building a question-answering assistant over a limited knowledge base. Avoid a goal such as “build a general chatbot.” A specific use case gives you data, a success measure, and a definition of done.
The 12-week roadmap
Week 1: Define the problem and learn notebook basics
Write a one-page problem brief. State who will use the system, what input it receives, what output it should produce, and what would count as useful. List obvious risks, including private data, biased examples, unsafe recommendations, and cases where a human must make the final decision.
Learn how a Python notebook is organized: cells, variables, imports, functions, comments, file paths, and output inspection. Reproduce a tiny example that loads a data file, prints a few rows, and saves a result. Your deliverable is a notebook with the problem brief at the top and a learning-log entry at the bottom.
Week 2: Python, data handling, and responsible AI
Practice Python control flow, lists and dictionaries, functions, exceptions, and simple modules. Then work with tabular data using NumPy- and pandas-level operations: selecting columns, filtering rows, handling missing values, grouping records, and producing a basic chart or summary.
Make a data dictionary that explains every field and identifies sensitive or unreliable values. Record how the data was obtained and what it does not represent. Microsoft’s official beginner curriculum is a useful spine here: its current page describes a 12-week, 24-lesson sequence with practical lessons, quizzes, labs, and ethics content. Treat it as a sequence to work through, not as a reason to skip your own project notebook.
Week 3: Understand the classical machine-learning workflow
Learn the distinction between supervised learning, where examples include a target, and unsupervised learning, where the algorithm looks for structure without a target. Study the purpose of training, validation, and test splits. Keep the test set untouched until you are ready to report a result.
Build a baseline before trying a sophisticated model. A baseline might always predict the most common class or use the average value. The baseline tells you whether a model has learned anything useful and prevents impressive-looking but unhelpful metrics. Your artifact is a notebook that records the split, baseline, model choice, and first result.

Week 4: Features, metrics, and error analysis
Prepare features without leaking information from the future or from the target label. Compare a regression task, which predicts a number, with a classification task, which predicts a category. Learn metrics appropriate to the decision: accuracy can hide minority-class failures, while precision, recall, F1, mean absolute error, or a confusion matrix may reveal different trade-offs.
Inspect individual errors instead of looking only at one score. Create a table containing the input, expected output, prediction, and a short explanation of the failure. End the week with one small regression or classification project and a paragraph describing where it should not be trusted.
Week 5: Neural-network foundations
Learn what tensors represent, how layers transform inputs, how a loss function measures error, and how an optimizer changes parameters. You do not need to derive every equation, but you should be able to explain a forward pass, a training step, and the difference between parameters and hyperparameters.
Train a small network on a modest dataset and plot training and validation performance. Watch for overfitting: a model that improves on training examples while degrading on unseen examples is memorizing rather than generalizing. Your deliverable is a short experiment comparing at least one architecture or training setting and explaining the result.

Week 6: Deep learning practice and transfer learning
Study regularization, early stopping, data augmentation where appropriate, and transfer learning. Starting from a pretrained representation is often more practical than training a large network from zero, especially when your dataset is small.
Deep Learning with Python by François Chollet is an optional reference for these weeks. It covers neural-network and deep-learning concepts with Keras examples; it is support material, not a prerequisite. Check the current edition and availability before buying, and use the chapters that match your project rather than attempting to read the whole book first.
Produce a reproducible notebook that states the dataset, preprocessing, model, training settings, validation method, and known failure cases.

Week 7: Generative-AI and large-language-model basics
Move from predicting a fixed label to generating or transforming content. Learn the practical limits of large language models: they can produce fluent text without guaranteeing truth, consistency, completeness, or safe advice. Practice prompts that specify role, task, context, constraints, and output format.

Compare two prompt versions against the same examples. Save the inputs and outputs so that a later change can be checked rather than judged from memory.
Week 8: Structured output, embeddings, retrieval, and tools
Ask the model for a defined schema when downstream code needs reliable fields. Validate the returned structure and handle invalid output rather than assuming the model followed instructions. Learn what embeddings represent and how vector search can retrieve semantically related passages.
Construct a small retrieval-augmented prototype over a limited document set. Record the source passages supplied to the model and test questions whose answers are present, absent, or contradicted by the documents. Google’s generative-AI learning path describes this progression through generative applications, embeddings, vector search, multimodal prompting, and multimodal retrieval-augmented generation. Use only the parts relevant to your use case; multimodal work is optional.
Week 9: Evaluation and safety
Turn your examples into a small, versioned test set. Include expected answers or acceptable ranges, not just successful demonstrations. Measure task success, unsupported claims, refusal behavior where safety matters, latency, and cost or resource use when those affect the user experience.

Week 10: Deployment and the prototype-to-production gap
Wrap the smallest useful version in a thin interface: a command-line script, a simple web form, or an API endpoint. Keep the interface separate from the model logic so you can replace a model or prompt without rewriting everything.

Document configuration, dependencies, expected inputs, failure responses, and how to stop or roll back the service. Add basic logging that excludes sensitive content. Google Cloud’s Production-Ready AI learning path frames the prototype-to-production gap around security, scalability, and observability for probabilistic systems. You do not need enterprise infrastructure in week 10, but you should show that you understand why a notebook alone is not a production service.
Week 11: Build the capstone end to end
Freeze the scope. Connect data preparation, model or retrieval logic, evaluation checks, and the user-facing interface. Prefer a narrow workflow that works reliably over a broad feature list that cannot be tested.
Compare the system with a simple baseline: a rules-based approach, keyword search, a majority-class predictor, or a manual process. Keep a change log and note which changes improved or harmed the measured result. Ask another person to try the application using instructions that do not reveal the expected answer.
Week 12: Publish, demonstrate, and choose the next skill
Clean the repository and publish the code if the data and license permit it. Your README should explain the problem, setup, sample input and output, evaluation method, limitations, safety considerations, and likely next improvements. Include examples of failures, not only the best result.
Record a two-minute demonstration showing the user journey and one edge case. State the baseline and the measured result without implying that a small test set proves general performance. Finish with a short roadmap: for example, better data collection, stronger evaluation, model monitoring, user research, or a deeper study of optimization.

What to measure each week
- Artifact: one notebook, report, test set, interface change, or documentation update that can be reviewed later.
- Understanding: explain the week’s main concept in plain language and identify one situation where it fails.
- Evidence: save code, data assumptions, outputs, and decisions instead of relying on screenshots or memory.
- Feedback: obtain a review from a peer, user, or technical community when possible, then record what changed.
- Scope: remove features that do not improve the chosen use case or cannot be evaluated.
Common ways the plan goes wrong
Trying to learn every framework
Framework switching feels productive but prevents depth. Use one notebook stack for the foundation and one application approach for the capstone. Learn a new tool only when it solves a documented problem.
Skipping the baseline
Without a baseline, a model’s score has no practical meaning. A simple rule that is transparent and cheap may be preferable to a complex model that is only marginally better.
Using a tiny success-only test set
Include ordinary, ambiguous, out-of-scope, and adversarial cases. Keep evaluation examples separate from prompt-tuning examples when possible, and never quietly remove a failure because it makes the result look worse.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Leaking private or licensed data
Do not upload confidential records to a hosted model or notebook unless you have authorization and understand retention and processing terms. Use synthetic or public data for practice, redact identifiers, and document the data license.
Confusing a polished demo with a reliable system
Show failure behavior, response time, fallback handling, and human review. If the application gives advice, make its limits visible and route consequential decisions to a qualified person.
Running out of time in the final weeks
Start the capstone repository in week 1 and add to it every week. By week 8, freeze a minimum feature set. A small application with tests and honest documentation is a stronger portfolio piece than an ambitious unfinished product.
What you should have at the end
After 12 weeks, a credible beginner portfolio contains a progression rather than a single screenshot: foundational notebooks, a classical machine-learning experiment with error analysis, a neural-network exercise, a generative-AI or retrieval prototype, an evaluation set, and a deployed or runnable capstone. The most valuable evidence is not a claim that you “know AI,” but a clear record showing what you built, how you measured it, where it fails, and what you would improve next.
