IRAS 18293-0941, a binary system in the Milky Way, is being proposed as a strong candidate for a “microblazar”: a compact object whose relativistic jet points close to Earth. The “firing line” is about the jet’s orientation, not a reported threat to the planet. The evidence is suggestive, but the classification and a proposed link to a nearby ultra-high-energy source remain uncertain.
What is a microblazar?
A blazar is an active galactic nucleus whose relativistic jet is directed close to our line of sight. A microblazar is the proposed smaller, Galactic counterpart: a stellar-mass compact object in an X-ray binary producing a jet aimed nearly toward an observer. In this case, “micro” refers to the scale and setting of the system, not to a miniature version of a dangerous beam.

The phrase “in the firing line” describes that alignment. The cited report does not say the system poses a danger to Earth.
Why astronomers are considering IRAS 18293-0941
The candidate is about 12,000 light-years away in the Milky Way and obscured by dust, according to Live Science’s 2026 report. That report describes a binary containing a black hole and a hot, massive star, orbiting one another roughly every 11 days. Material drawn from the star is thought to feed the compact object, with jets expelled in opposite directions; one appears oriented toward Earth.

The case is based on observations across multiple wavelengths and theoretical analysis, not on the headline metaphor alone. The study’s abstract reports photometric and spectroscopic properties typical of a binary star, along with clear, collimated, one-sided radio emission consistent with relativistic motion and a reduced jet-ejection angle. The research team used Calar Alto Astronomical Observatory, the European VLBI Network, MeerKAT and archival Very Large Array data, Live Science reports.
Which expected signs fit—and which do not?
| Microblazar clue | What is reported for this candidate | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Jet pointed close to our line of sight | One-sided, collimated radio emission is consistent with relativistic motion at a reduced ejection angle, according to the study abstract on arXiv. | Supportive evidence for the proposed orientation, not proof by itself that the source is a microblazar. |
| Rapid variability | The expected fast variability was not observed, according to the study abstract. | A missing expected signature leaves an important uncertainty. |
| Possible connection to a high-energy source | The team models a possible association with nearby LHAASO J1831-1007u*. | A proposed interpretation; it does not establish that this binary produces the source’s ultra-high-energy particles. |
The authors suggest that a dense envelope around the system could smooth out rapid changes. That is a possible explanation for the absent variability, not a direct observation that settles the discrepancy.

Is the nearby ultra-high-energy source linked to the binary?
The study proposes that IRAS 18293-0941 may be associated with LHAASO J1831-1007u*, an ultra-high-energy source in the system’s vicinity. This is a modeled connection, not demonstrated causation: the available evidence does not prove that the binary accelerates the particles responsible for the source. Live Science also reports that the researchers are still investigating whether the region behind the system is actually the proposed hotspot.

How firm is the “first microblazar” claim?
The careful description is “strong candidate,” not confirmed first. The paper calls the object a serious candidate, and first author Josep Martí told Live Science: “It is the first time that we have a serious candidate.” The missing rapid variability and the still-proposed hotspot association are reasons to preserve that qualification.

This is not presented as an amateur observing target. The object is hidden behind dust, and the evidence described comes from professional observatories and archival radio observations. The available reporting does not establish that a consumer telescope or binoculars could show the source.
