India removed the 18% GST on individual health insurance premiums, including family floaters, from September 22, 2025. That cut the tax portion of an unchanged premium, but it did not prevent later changes to an insurer’s base rate or to the price of a policy renewed with different terms. Renewal reports in 2026 described sharp increases for some customers; they do not establish a national average increase.
What changed when GST was removed
The exemption applies to individual health insurance policies, including family floaters, effective September 22, 2025. It does not extend to group health policies under this individual-policy exemption. The Ministry of Finance set out the change in a February 3, 2026 Rajya Sabha answer; the scope and effective date were also reported by The Indian Express.

The immediate saving is the tax that would otherwise have been added to the base premium. For example, The Indian Express illustrated an unchanged ₹30,000 base premium: with the former 18% GST, the total was ₹35,400; without GST, it is ₹30,000, a ₹5,400 reduction. That is 18% of the base premium, or about 15.25% of the former tax-inclusive bill. The example assumes the base premium itself does not change.

Renewal experiences were not uniform. In an October 6, 2026 report, Moneycontrol cited broker S K Sethi, director of Ria Insurance Brokers, saying rates at many insurers had risen by as much as 35% over the previous 12 months. The report headline also referred to broker data showing 25–41% renewal hikes in 2026.

Those figures describe reported cases and broker data, not a representative national average. Moneycontrol quoted Niva Bupa Health Insurance executive director and CFO Vishwanath Mahendra cautioning that increases should be assessed at the individual policy level, since pricing can vary with product, age, geography, sum insured, product changes and where a product is in its pricing cycle. The available figures do not establish how much the average Indian policyholder’s premium changed over the year.
Why GST relief and a higher renewal bill can coexist
In its February 2026 Rajya Sabha answer, the Ministry of Finance said general and health insurers had confirmed they had not increased premiums on account of the GST exemption and had passed the relief to policyholders; IRDAI had communicated this to the Department of Financial Services on January 7, 2026. That statement concerns the pass-through of the tax relief. It does not mean an insurer cannot later revise the underlying base rate, or that a customer’s renewal will cost the same if the policy or risk details change.

A bill can therefore fall because the GST line is gone while the base premium changes for other reasons. A renewal can also reflect the insured person’s age or age band, location, cover amount, added benefits, or a product migration or upgrade. Moneycontrol quoted Bajaj General Insurance MD and CEO Tapan Singhel referring to medical inflation close to 13%; that is his stated figure, not an independently verified national medical-inflation index.

IRDAI’s health insurance FAQ says pricing is based on age and other applicable risk factors; it also describes rules on filed premiums and on premiums during a policy term. Check the current FAQ for the applicable wording rather than treating a different renewal price as proof that the GST exemption was not passed on.
If the policies are truly like-for-like, compare last year’s base premium with this year’s base premium separately from tax. If the insured members, coverage or product changed, identify those differences before attributing the full bill change to repricing. The cited reports do not provide a complete policy-level time series or a representative nationwide measure that could settle the average change for all customers.
