The practical challenge was making education, work experience, projects, and other work easy to find without losing the sense of discovery.
How the portfolio turns career information into a world
Shakeel’s map uses islands to represent different parts of her journey. Buildings and locations stand for education, work experience, projects, and other work. Exploration supplies the visual experience; the underlying structure keeps the portfolio’s career information available.

Her stated goal was to make a portfolio visitors would “actually explore” while preserving a balance between creativity and usability. That is the design intention she describes, not a result established by user testing.
Why she replaced the first design
The first version was a side-scrolling coastal town. Shakeel felt it did not communicate her experience clearly enough, so she scrapped it and rebuilt the concept around an island map. In the new direction, visitors could explore the world while still reaching the portfolio information.

Her iteration illustrates a project-specific lesson: novelty needs to help people understand what the portfolio contains. It is Shakeel’s account of a design decision, not a universal rule or a claim that the island version was objectively more usable.
What she says went into the build
Shakeel lists Next.js, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, PixiJS, Framer Motion, Howler, and Zustand as the project’s technology stack. She does not specify which library implements each feature, so the stack alone does not establish how animations, interactions, navigation, or audio were individually built.

She describes the work as making animations, interactions, navigation, audio, and portfolio content coexist without making the site frustrating to use. Her account does not report implementation costs, performance measurements, comparative testing, or accessibility audit results.

What this project can—and cannot—show
The portfolio demonstrates one way to give a developer’s work a distinctive visual frame while organizing information around clear categories. For anyone considering an exploratory portfolio, the useful questions raised by Shakeel’s account are whether visitors can quickly find work and background information, and whether exploration remains optional rather than obstructive.
The account does not provide evidence to rank this approach against conventional portfolio layouts, establish that it improves usability, or determine how it performs across devices. Its strongest takeaway is narrower: when the first visual concept did not communicate her experience clearly enough, Shakeel changed the concept rather than treating novelty as the goal.
