| Q2 2026 revenue | More than $3 billion, the company’s first quarter above that level. Arista Q2 results | $17.2 billion, up 1% year over year. IBM Q2 results |
| Q2 business detail | The release highlighted 1.6 Tbps AI fabric platforms, including liquid-cooled options. Arista Q2 results | Software: $7.8 billion, up 5%; consulting: $5.3 billion, essentially flat; infrastructure: $3.8 billion, down 7%. IBM Q2 results |
| Q2 cash and shareholder return | Not stated in the cited Q2 figures. | Free cash flow was $2.5 billion. IBM declared a $1.69 quarterly dividend per common share, payable September 10, 2026, to holders of record August 10. IBM Q2 results |
The numbers show a clear difference in recent growth, not a verdict on share value. Arista’s FY2025 revenue growth was much faster than IBM’s, but growth alone cannot show whether Arista’s stock is attractively priced. IBM’s cash flow and dividend are relevant to income-oriented investors, but they do not establish that IBM is cheap or that its slower growth will reverse.

Why Arista may suit a growth-oriented investor
Arista Networks (NYSE: ANET) supplies networking platforms for large data-center, AI, campus and routing environments. Its latest release points to expansion in AI networking, including 1.6 Tbps fabric platforms. The investment case is therefore tied to continuing demand for high-performance networks and the company’s ability to convert that demand into revenue and margins. The reported results support strong recent growth; they do not prove that demand will persist or that the shares already reflect a reasonable outlook. Arista Q2 results

Risks to examine
- Customer concentration: reliance on a limited number of customers can make results more sensitive to changes in their spending.
- Supply and manufacturing: Arista identifies dependence on limited suppliers and third-party manufacturers, as well as component availability, as risks.
- Competition and technology shifts: network markets change, and competitive pressure or changing technology can affect demand, revenue and margins.
- Execution and variability: revenue and margins can vary, so investors should consider whether the growth trajectory can continue rather than extrapolating one strong period.
These risks are described in the company’s 2025 Form 10-K and its Q2 2026 release.
Why IBM may suit a diversified or income-focused investor
International Business Machines (NYSE: IBM) operates across software, consulting, infrastructure and financing. Its breadth can make the business less dependent on a single product category, though its latest segment results were mixed: software grew, consulting was flat and infrastructure declined. IBM cited growth in Red Hat and data software, while transaction processing declined. IBM Q2 results

IBM reported Q2 GAAP net income of $2.2 billion and free cash flow of $2.5 billion. It also reported $62.0 billion of debt, including IBM Financing debt, at quarter end. The dividend provides a stated cash return, but investors should weigh it alongside the company’s obligations and the durability of cash generation rather than treating the payment alone as proof of safety. IBM’s updated 2026 outlook
In its Q2 release, IBM revised its full-year revenue-growth expectation to 4–5% at constant currency. Its Q1 release had stated an expectation for growth above 5%, so the Q2 figure is the current outlook in the cited materials. IBM continued to expect full-year free cash flow to increase by about $1 billion year over year. These are company expectations, not guaranteed outcomes. IBM Q2 results · IBM Q1 results
Which is the better buy for your priorities?
| If your priority is… | What the cited evidence favors | What it does not settle |
|---|---|---|
| Faster recent growth and data-center or AI networking exposure | Arista’s FY2025 revenue growth and Q2 revenue milestone make its recent growth evidence stronger. | Whether future demand, margins and share-price valuation justify the risk. |
| Broader business exposure, cash generation and a declared dividend | IBM’s software, consulting and infrastructure mix, reported cash flow and quarterly dividend align more directly with these preferences. | Whether the growth outlook, debt and dividend sustainability make the shares attractive at today’s price. |
| A stock that is cheaper relative to its prospects | Neither company can be selected from operating results alone. | Comparable valuation measures, current prices and your time horizon are necessary. |
What to compare before buying either stock
Use the same valuation date and definitions for both companies. A comparison based on one company’s reported results and the other’s adjusted metrics can mislead.
- Forward price-to-earnings: compare estimates for the same forward period, and note whether earnings are GAAP or adjusted.
- Free-cash-flow yield: compare free cash flow with market capitalization using a consistent period and definition.
- Enterprise value relative to operating earnings: include debt and other relevant obligations rather than looking only at equity value.
- Growth expectations: distinguish reported growth from constant-currency growth and company guidance from analyst forecasts.
- Shareholder return and financial obligations: evaluate IBM’s dividend alongside cash generation and debt; assess both companies’ capacity to fund investment and withstand weaker demand.
- Downside tolerance and holding period: decide how much volatility or a prolonged slowdown you can accept before choosing which business profile fits.
The figures above come from official company releases and an SEC-filed Arista results document. Company-defined non-GAAP and constant-currency measures are not the same as GAAP or reported growth. Share prices, valuation multiples, guidance and dividend details can change; the cited operating results do not provide a current valuation comparison.
