1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA new model is available, but changing the model value is not a complete migration plan. The ID selects a model for an API request; the replacement may respond differently to the same prompt. Check that the candidate is available to your account, evaluate it on your application’s real tasks, then roll it out with monitoring and a rollback path.
What changing a model ID does—and doesn’t do
A model ID tells the API which model to use for a request. The OpenAI API provides a model resource for listing available models and retrieving a model by ID. That makes the ID an important configuration choice, but it does not guarantee that another ID is a drop-in replacement.

Even within a model family, behavior can change between snapshots. OpenAI’s API documentation states: “Model prompting behavior between snapshots is subject to change.” As a result, identical prompts can produce different outputs after a model change, with possible effects on task success, formatting, or downstream application behavior.
How to assess a candidate before changing production
1. Record what the current integration needs
Before comparing candidates, document the existing model ID and endpoint, request shape, enabled tools or modalities, latency and cost constraints, and the user-facing tasks the model handles. A suitable replacement depends on those requirements; the fact that a model is new does not establish that it is the right fit.

2. Verify availability in the live catalog
Use the model listing resource to check what is available, and the retrieve-model resource to look up a particular ID. Verify in the account and with the endpoint you actually use. Availability can change. A model object can include an optional shutdown_date; it may be null when no shutdown has been announced.
3. Pin a version and run application-specific evals
OpenAI recommends pinned model versions and evals to support more consistent behavior. Test the candidate against representative inputs from your own application, including cases that have caused failures. Compare the results on the dimensions your product depends on:

- Whether the model completes the intended task and handles known failure cases.
- Whether outputs follow required formats or schemas closely enough for downstream use.
- Whether the candidate supports the inputs, tools, or modalities your integration uses.
- Whether latency and cost fit your application’s constraints.
These are practical comparison dimensions, not a universal OpenAI test set or pass threshold. Choose acceptance criteria that reflect your product’s risks and needs; a general recommendation to run evals does not identify a winner for an unspecified workload.
Roll out the change so you can observe and reverse it
Once the candidate meets your application’s criteria, deploy it in stages appropriate to your system. Keep the former model configuration available long enough to restore it if outcomes degrade, and inspect application results as traffic moves to the new ID.
Before production, review the API’s error codes and rate limits. Log request IDs as recommended in the API overview so you can investigate problematic requests. After launch, monitor the same task measures used in evaluation alongside API failures, rate limits, and user reports.

A successful launch is not a reason to stop checking. Keep the model ID in managed configuration, revisit the live catalog when planning future changes, and review shutdown information as part of migration planning. The right replacement can only be determined by testing available candidates against your integration and its constraints.
