That account is not an independently verified browser bug: the exact date, browser, operating system, input steps and code path are unknown. The useful lesson is narrower and practical: a date control can help collect a date, but an application still needs to decide whether that date makes sense for its task.
What is known about the year 60901 report?
An indexed DEV Community article by Daniel Pertu reports that typing a recorded date into a date input produced year 60901 and that the form accepted and submitted the value. The original page was not available for direct verification, and the available account does not establish the exact value entered, browser or version, operating system, locale, reproduction steps, or how the application processed the submission.

That means the report should not be treated as proof that a particular browser created the year, that all date inputs behave this way, or that the HTML standard requires browsers to reject that year. Without the precise submitted string and a reproduction, the cause cannot be identified.

What an HTML date input does—and does not do
An <input type="date"> represents a date value. Its underlying value is normalized as yyyy-mm-dd, even though the browser may display the date in a locale-specific format. Code can read the string through HTMLInputElement.value or get a numeric representation with valueAsNumber. The displayed text and the value sent by the form are not necessarily formatted the same way.

The HTML Standard defines date parsing and valid date values. HTML date strings use the proleptic Gregorian calendar, represent years with at least four digits, and do not support years before 1 CE. These format and calendar rules do not define the dates that make sense for every product. A date may be a valid calendar value yet still be outside the range or policy an application intends to accept.
Browser constraints versus application validation
These approaches work together: browser controls can guide entry and enforce configured bounds, while application validation checks whether a submitted date is acceptable for the actual task.

The control’s visual interface can vary by browser and operating system. Do not infer the submitted value from the appearance of the date picker; inspect the actual value received by the application.

How to prevent implausible dates from flowing through a form
- Inspect the submitted value. Check the date string received by the application, not only what the user saw in the browser. For a date input, the usual serialized form is
yyyy-mm-dd. - Set bounds when the task has a defined window. For example, a form can use
<input type="date" name="move_in" min="2026-01-01" max="2026-12-31">if those dates truly represent the allowed period. Replace them with the range appropriate to the application; fixed example dates are not a general policy. - Validate at the receiving boundary. When a form is submitted, check that the value parses as a date and falls within the application’s allowed range and other task-specific rules. Do not rely solely on client-side constraints, since the server is the system processing the submitted value.
- Return a useful correction message. If a value is invalid or outside the intended range, explain what range or condition is accepted and let the person correct it rather than silently treating an implausible date as valid.
What the report does not establish
- It does not identify a browser, operating system, version, locale, or specific input sequence.
- It does not establish whether year 60901 originated in the browser control, application code, or another part of the form workflow.
- It does not show that the incident is common or reproducible, or that every date input accepts that value.
