Compatibility depends on the device, its companion phone and app, and what you are trying to do. For Ray-Ban Meta glasses, the official FAQ specifically advises Android users to turn off their phone VPN as one troubleshooting step for poor video-call connections; that is not a blanket warning against using a VPN with smart glasses.
Does a VPN work with augmented-reality devices?
It can, but “AR device” covers products with different connection designs. A phone VPN protects traffic routed through the phone’s VPN connection; it does not automatically mean every connection made by paired glasses or an XR headset passes through that VPN. Check each workflow separately rather than assuming that successful pairing proves calls, imports, updates, or XR apps will work the same way.

No provider-by-provider compatibility evidence establishes one VPN as best across AR devices. General claims about a VPN’s privacy or speed do not establish that it will work reliably with a particular device or app.

What Ray-Ban Meta’s documentation says
Ray-Ban Meta glasses require a supported smartphone, the Meta AI companion app, wireless internet access, and a Meta account. The official FAQ lists Android 10 or later with location services enabled, or iOS 14.4 or later. Requirements can change by market, device, and app version, so check the current regional Ray-Ban | Meta FAQs before setup.

Normal app use and direct glasses Wi-Fi are different connections
The FAQ distinguishes ordinary app use over the phone’s Wi-Fi network from a temporary direct Wi-Fi connection between the phone/app and glasses. The glasses use that direct connection for tasks such as importing captures and installing firmware updates. Because those are different workflows, a VPN’s effect on a video call does not by itself show whether imports or updates will work.
Android video-call troubleshooting
For poor video-call connectivity on Android, Ray-Ban’s FAQ suggests turning on the phone’s Wi-Fi and turning off the phone VPN. Treat this as a targeted troubleshooting step for that symptom and device family, not as evidence that VPNs generally break AR devices. If you try it, change one setting at a time and check whether the call improves.

Other XR setups have different network requirements
Do not generalize the Ray-Ban Meta guidance to all wearable displays or XR systems. Meta’s developer documentation describes both mobile-app extensions and standalone web apps for display glasses; availability can depend on the rollout described in its Meta Wearables FAQ. Google’s PC Connect help, by contrast, says the computer and Android XR device need to be on the same Wi-Fi network for that specific connection. That requirement is documented for PC Connect, not as a universal XR or VPN rule: Connect your computer to Android XR with PC Connect.

- Pairing and sign-in: Confirm that initial pairing works and that the companion app can sign in and reach the features you need.
- Calls or streaming: Check call or streaming quality with the VPN enabled. If an Android Ray-Ban Meta video call has poor connectivity, try the manufacturer’s scoped troubleshooting advice: phone Wi-Fi on, phone VPN off.
- Capture imports: Test importing photos or videos separately. For Ray-Ban Meta, imports may use the temporary direct Wi-Fi connection between the phone/app and glasses.
- Firmware updates: Check updates independently of imports and calls. Ray-Ban Meta firmware installation can also use that temporary direct connection.
- XR apps or computer connections: Verify the network requirements for the particular app or connection. For Google Android XR PC Connect, the computer and XR device must be on the same Wi-Fi network.
Record which settings were enabled when a failure occurred, then change one at a time. A successful test on one phone, OS version, app version, or workflow does not establish compatibility across other configurations.

A VPN app on a phone and a VPN configured on a Wi-Fi router are different setups. The cited device documentation does not establish router-level VPN compatibility for Ray-Ban Meta glasses or the other named XR connections, so do not assume a router VPN will resolve a phone-app or direct-device connection issue. Confirm the intended routing and compatibility for your specific equipment before choosing a service or changing your network.

What can—and cannot—be recommended
The available official documentation supports checking device-specific behavior, not ranking VPN providers. No cited provider comparison, independent testing, or measurements establish a best service, a speed or latency advantage, or reliable split-tunneling and router configurations for these devices. Choose based on your broader VPN needs, then verify the workflows above with your actual hardware.
