Cloudflare OHTTP Gateway is a managed gateway service for Oblivious HTTP (OHTTP): it decrypts requests that arrive through a separate relay, then processes or forwards them to an application. Cloudflare announced it as a paid add-on to a Cloudflare zone in a closed beta on October 2, 2026; its announcement gives neither a price nor a general-availability date. It is not the same product as Cloudflare OHTTP Relay, which forwards encrypted requests rather than decrypting them.
What Cloudflare OHTTP Gateway does
OHTTP splits a request path between two roles. The relay receives the client’s connection and forwards an encrypted message. The gateway removes that encryption and handles the underlying HTTP request. Cloudflare OHTTP Gateway provides the gateway role as a managed service; it does not replace the relay.

That division is meant to keep one operator from seeing both the client’s network identity and the request content. It depends on the relay and gateway being operated independently and on a deployment that follows OHTTP’s trust assumptions. The IETF’s RFC 9458 defines the protocol and describes its limited applicability.

- The client encodes its HTTP request as Binary HTTP and encrypts it using HPKE with the gateway’s public-key configuration.
- The client sends the encrypted message to an OHTTP relay. The relay forwards it to the gateway without decrypting the application request.
- The gateway decrypts the message and processes or forwards the request in ordinary HTTP form.
- The gateway encrypts the response for the client, and the relay carries it back.
In the protocol’s intended separation, the relay can see the client’s connection and the gateway it contacts, but not the application content. The gateway can see the decrypted request but does not receive the client’s transport-layer address through the relay. OHTTP does not itself authenticate that a gateway is authorized to serve a particular target; clients must enforce that authorization.

Cloudflare OHTTP Gateway vs. Cloudflare OHTTP Relay
The names are easy to confuse: Cloudflare OHTTP Relay was formerly called Privacy Gateway, but it is a different service from the newly announced OHTTP Gateway. Cloudflare says a customer can use its Relay and operate a gateway independently, or use its managed Gateway with a third-party relay.
| Service or setup | Role | Who operates the other role | Cloudflare’s stated fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare OHTTP Relay | Forwards the encrypted payload; it does not decrypt the inner application request. | The customer runs the gateway. | Cloudflare positions this setup for applications hosted outside Cloudflare. |
| Cloudflare OHTTP Gateway | Decrypts and handles the request; it is not the relay. | A third party operates the relay. | Cloudflare positions it for applications already behind Cloudflare, OHTTP traffic arriving from a third party, and teams seeking managed gateway operations. |
These are Cloudflare’s described deployment patterns, not a guarantee that either arrangement suits every application. Cloudflare also presents its managed gateway as a way to reduce operational overhead and latency for suitable deployments; that is product positioning, not an independently verified performance result.

What OHTTP does—and does not—hide
OHTTP can separate a client’s transport identity from the application request, but it does not make a request anonymous to the application. Information sent in the request itself can identify or correlate a user.
- The relay can observe: the connecting client’s network address, the gateway destination, encrypted message boundaries and sizes, and timing. It can also refuse to forward traffic.
- The gateway and application can observe: the decrypted request, including any identifying fields, cookies, credentials, or account details it contains.
- Neither role is a cure for traffic analysis: timing and message size can reveal signals even when content is encrypted. Padding can reduce some of those signals, but does not remove every inference.
- Separation depends on deployment: the relay and gateway need independent operators for the intended separation of knowledge; collusion or a deployment that exposes both views weakens it.
Cloudflare’s Relay setup guidance advises customers to scrub user-identifying data before sending requests through the Relay. That is a practical reminder that OHTTP protects transport-level separation, not information the application is deliberately given.

Availability, pricing, and Relay’s separate data disclosure
Cloudflare’s October 2, 2026 announcement describes OHTTP Gateway as a paid add-on to a Cloudflare zone entering closed beta. The announcement does not state a price or a general-availability date. Do not assume the eligibility or terms of Relay apply to Gateway: Cloudflare’s Relay overview labels that separate managed service Enterprise-only, and its setup documentation also says Relay is in closed beta.
Cloudflare’s legal disclosure for OHTTP Relay says the company does not see the encrypted application HTTP content, but does see the connecting device’s IP address, the application service’s DNS name and IP, and request metadata such as browser type, operating system, hardware configuration, and timestamp. It says Cloudflare retains “Cloudflare OHTTP Relay Logs” for approximately 124 days. This disclosure is specific to Relay; the reviewed Cloudflare materials do not establish that the same details or retention period apply to the new Gateway.

Operational considerations before using OHTTP
- Application compatibility: OHTTP requires explicit support from both a relay and a gateway. It is best suited to applications that do not depend on connection-level state; it is not a general replacement for ordinary HTTP.
- Key handling: clients need an authenticated gateway public-key configuration. Operators need to manage key replacement or rotation and restrict which targets a gateway may serve.
- Abuse controls: target allowlisting and other safeguards matter because a gateway that accepts arbitrary requests can be abused. RFC 9458 discusses key management and abuse considerations.
- Implementation choice: Cloudflare publishes a Go reference implementation, but its repository says key rotation is currently lacking. Do not treat that reference code as turnkey production software without addressing that limitation.
- Latency and cryptographic cost: encapsulation adds work and deployment topology affects latency. Evaluate the full path for the application rather than assuming OHTTP is cost-free.
