1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA coding agent needs more than instructions: it needs a harness that supplies relevant repository context, defines what it can do, checks its work, and preserves enough state and history for people to understand and recover from failures. Prompts still matter, but a better prompt cannot compensate for missing project knowledge, unsafe permissions, or the absence of meaningful acceptance checks.
What is a coding-agent harness?
A harness is the operating layer around a language model that lets it work as a coding agent on a repository. A 2026 conceptual paper proposes a definition for distinguishing harnesses from adjacent systems such as agent frameworks, SDKs, IDE plugins, evaluation harnesses, and orchestrators; it is a boundary-setting paper, not a measured comparison of products. Read the paper’s abstract.

In practical terms, a harness assigns responsibilities that a task prompt alone does not cover:
- Task contract and stop rule: What is the goal, what constraints apply, what counts as success, and when should the agent stop or ask for help?
- Repository context: What project knowledge, conventions, and files can the agent discover, and how is that information kept current?
- Tools and permissions: Which actions can the agent take, and which require limits, approval, or a different workflow?
- Execution loop: How does the agent move from inspecting the task to making changes and responding to results?
- State and recovery: What information persists across a long task or interruption?
- Verification and traceability: What evidence shows the work meets its requirements, and what record helps a person understand what happened?
The exact architecture can vary. The useful design question is which responsibility is missing when an agent fails.

Should you fix a coding-agent failure with a better prompt or a better rule?
Ask whether the failure is about intent or the system around the task. A prompt can clarify what the agent should try to achieve. A harness change is more appropriate when the agent lacks information, has unsuitable access, cannot verify its changes, or loses continuity. A practitioner explainer frames this as “should I fix this with a better prompt or a better rule?” and describes an agent episode contract as part of the answer. See the practitioner explainer.
| Observed problem | More useful response |
|---|---|
| The agent misses a project convention or cannot find the relevant design decision. | Make repository knowledge easier to locate and navigate; clarify the task only if its intent is genuinely ambiguous. |
| The agent performs an action that should be constrained. | Put the boundary in an enforceable permission or workflow control, then check that the control behaves as intended. |
| The agent says a change is complete but provides no convincing evidence. | Define task-appropriate checks, such as tests, linters, structural checks, or review. |
| The work stalls, is interrupted, or cannot be reconstructed. | Improve continuity and preserve a useful trace of the task and its results. |
| The request itself is vague or contradictory. | Improve the task contract: specify the goal, constraints, acceptance criteria, and conditions for stopping or escalating. |
A longer prompt can help with the last case. It is not a substitute for controls that must reliably hold or checks that must demonstrate success.

Make repository knowledge easy to discover
Project knowledge helps only when an agent can find and use it. OpenAI describes keeping a short AGENTS.md as a map to a more structured documentation store, rather than packing all guidance into one large instruction file. In OpenAI’s account of its internal project, a giant file crowded out task context, accumulated stale guidance, and was harder to verify. That is an account of its own system, not a universal benchmark. Read OpenAI’s account.

Give the agent a clear route to the information that matters: project conventions, architecture, relevant interfaces, and instructions for validating changes. Keep durable guidance organized and reviewable so outdated directions do not quietly become part of the agent’s operating assumptions.

Make boundaries enforceable and completion observable
Instructions state what the agent should do; permissions and workflow controls determine what it can do. When a boundary matters, encode it in the system where feasible and check that the agent cannot bypass it merely by interpreting task wording differently. The harness-definition paper helps distinguish this operating layer from nearby kinds of agent tooling, but does not establish that every harness uses the same permission model.
Likewise, a confident completion message is not proof that code works. Define evidence that fits the task: tests for behavior, linters for applicable code rules, structural checks for repository requirements, or human review where judgment is needed. OpenAI says its internal setup used mechanical checks for repository knowledge and architecture, alongside review feedback on pull requests. The broader principle is to make success observable rather than inferred from fluent prose.

Preserve state and make failures diagnosable
Long-running work can span multiple steps or be interrupted. A useful harness retains the state needed to continue and leaves a trace that lets a person reconstruct what the agent inspected, changed, and checked. The practitioner explainer treats state and traceability as harness responsibilities; these are useful design requirements, not evidence that all coding agents implement them equally well.

Decide what the agent should do when a check fails, required context is missing, or it reaches a permission boundary: retry within limits, report the blocker, request approval, or stop. A clear stop rule prevents an agent from treating every obstacle as a reason to keep improvising.

What OpenAI’s internal project does—and does not—show
OpenAI’s February 11, 2026 account describes an internal product experiment whose first commit was in late August 2025. Five months later, the company reported a repository on the order of a million lines of code and roughly 1,500 pull requests opened and merged. It said the project involved zero manually written lines of code and estimated that it took about one-tenth the time it would have taken to write the code by hand. OpenAI also reported an average of 3.5 pull requests per engineer per day for a small team of three; its account says throughput rose as the team grew to seven. OpenAI’s article describes the experiment and its setup.
These are OpenAI’s own figures and estimates for its internal project, team, repositories, and tooling—not independent results or a forecast for other organizations. The account itself says the end-to-end agent behavior depends heavily on repository structure and tooling. Its most transferable point is therefore the investment in context, tools, checks, and feedback loops, not a promised productivity multiplier. Ryan Lopopolo, an OpenAI Member of the Technical Staff, summarizes the intended division of labor as: “Humans steer. Agents execute.”
How to evaluate a harness
There is no universal best harness established by the sources here, and no controlled ranking of commercial coding-agent products. Compare systems against the work and repository you actually have:
- Context: What project information can the agent reliably discover, and how is it kept current?
- Tools and controls: Which actions can it take, and how are sensitive operations bounded or approved?
- Evidence of completion: What tests, checks, or review establish that the task is done?
- State and recovery: Can the system resume useful work after failure or interruption, and can a person follow what happened?
- Assumptions: What model, repository structure, and tooling does the setup depend on?
This responsibility-based comparison is more useful than treating “harness” as a label that automatically signals quality. The right changes depend on where the actual failure occurs.
