Start with your Linux distribution’s own repository, then verify who publishes the app, what access it requests, and whether the developer supports your distribution and version. If the app is available only from a third party, weigh that source’s update and security practices before installing; a package-manager integrity check does not prove the publisher is trustworthy.
Start with your distribution’s software center or repository
Search your distribution’s software center or official repository first. Packages there are usually the simplest to install and update through the system’s normal package manager. But a graphical software center may show apps from several sources, so check which source supplies the listing rather than assuming every result comes from the distribution.

For Ubuntu, APT verifies packages from configured repositories. That verification helps detect tampering; it does not establish that every repository owner is trustworthy. Ubuntu’s documented integrity-check path recommends installing by package name rather than by pointing APT at a local .deb file. Ubuntu’s package-management documentation explains the checks and their scope.
Confirm who publishes the app
Do not rely on an app’s name or icon alone. Check whether the publisher is the project itself, your distribution, or another party, and compare that identity with the project’s official website.

For Flatpak apps on Flathub, inspect the listing for its developer-verification status, permissions, and open-source status. A missing verification indicator is a reason to check the developer’s site; a verification badge is not a guarantee of software quality. Flathub describes what its developer verification means.
Check whether the project supports your Linux setup
A download labeled “Linux” does not necessarily mean the app is supported on your distribution, release, or hardware. Before installing, look for these details on the project’s own site:

- A Linux download or an explicit list of supported distributions and versions.
- Recent release notes or a visible release history.
- An issue tracker or support channel that shows whether Linux-specific problems are being addressed.
- Installation and removal instructions, including any required services or dependencies.
- Confirmation that the features you need are available in the Linux build.
There is no universal support score that can establish whether an app will work on a particular system. Treat support claims as specific to the app version and environment described by its publisher.

When more than one build appears, compare the publisher, source, distribution support, permissions or confinement, update mechanism, and access to system resources. A software center can be a discovery tool, but it may aggregate distinct sources. KDE says Discover can manage distribution repositories, Flatpak repositories, the Snap store, and AppImages from store.kde.org; check the source attached to the specific listing. KDE Discover’s documentation describes those supported sources.

Package formats do not make an app safe by themselves. Their behavior depends on the package, its source, and how it is configured. For example, Ubuntu officially recommends both snap and deb formats. Its documentation says snaps are usually sandboxed and update daily by default, although some use classic confinement; it also says third-party debs have unrestricted resource access. Those are Ubuntu-specific descriptions, not guarantees for every distribution or package. Ubuntu’s application-installation guide explains these distinctions.
Be cautious with third-party repositories and direct downloads
Adding a repository is a continuing trust decision: its owner can provide software and updates through your package manager. Ubuntu warns that third-party repositories are not vetted by Ubuntu members for security or reliability, and that enabling one gives its owner access to the system through package installation and updates. Ubuntu’s guidance is direct: “Only add software repositories from sources that you trust.” See Ubuntu’s repository guidance before adding one.

For a direct download, use the project’s official site and follow its instructions for your distribution. Check how updates are delivered and how to uninstall the app. Do not assume that a file is trustworthy merely because it is a familiar format or appears in a search result.
Use a software center as a catalogue, not proof of provenance
Repositories are the primary publishing mechanism described by Flatpak, and Flathub is its primary hosting service. GNOME Software and KDE Discover can browse repositories, making them useful for finding applications; the publisher and source still need to be checked on the listing. Flatpak’s user documentation describes repositories and software-center browsing.

Use compatibility tools only for the apps they cover
Valve describes Proton as a Steam Play compatibility tool based on Wine and additional components. That supports considering Proton for Steam Play titles, not assuming it will run an arbitrary Linux desktop app. Check the app’s current status and the tool’s documented scope before relying on compatibility. Valve’s Proton project provides its description and project information.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Search your distribution’s repository or software center. If the center lists multiple sources, inspect the source shown for the app.
- Verify the publisher. Compare the listing with the project’s official site; for Flathub, inspect verification status and permissions.
- Match the support details to your system. Check the app’s supported distribution and version, release history, and whether needed features work.
- Assess access and updates. Review permissions or confinement and determine who supplies updates.
- If only a third-party source exists, decide whether you trust its owner. Understand the system access involved before adding its repository or installing its package.
- Keep a fallback. If support details are missing or the app cannot meet a critical need, choose a better-supported alternative rather than treating a compatibility tool as a guarantee.
