Foundry’s Universal Battlemap Importer explicitly accepts .dd2vtt, .df2vtt, and .uvtt. Owlbear Rodeo compatibility described here comes through a community extension, not built-in platform support. In both cases, the extension alone does not guarantee a successful import: the file’s structure must match the particular importer.
What is a .dd2vtt file?
Universal VTT is a map-interchange format commonly associated with Dungeondraft exports. A .dd2vtt file is JSON containing an encoded PNG map image and additional data describing map geometry and scale. A technical account of the importer implementations describes fields for line_of_sight wall segments, portals, lights, and pixels per grid (PPI). The account does not establish a complete normative format specification, so treat these fields and their meanings as implementation-dependent rather than guaranteed across every VTT: technical account of Universal VTT import behavior.

- Walls: represented as line segments used for line of sight.
- Doors: represented as portals; how an importer interprets portal properties can vary.
- Lights: represented as light entries, with importer-specific color handling.
- Grid scale: expressed using a pixels-per-grid value, but a cross-platform coordinate origin or unit convention is not established by the cited implementation account.
Does Foundry import .dd2vtt files?
Yes. Foundry’s Universal Battlemap Importer interface lists .dd2vtt, .df2vtt, and .uvtt as accepted uploads. Its available controls include image conversion to WebP, custom grid PPI, wall fidelity, object walls, padding, and offset. These choices can change the imported scene or image, so record them when troubleshooting or trying to reproduce an import. The interface is visible in the Foundry D&D5e repository; confirm the labels and behavior in the importer version installed in your Foundry setup.

- Open the Universal Battlemap Importer in Foundry and upload the
.dd2vttfile. The importer interface accepts this extension alongside.df2vttand.uvtt. - Choose whether to convert the image to WebP, and set custom grid PPI if the detected scale needs adjustment.
- Set wall fidelity and decide whether to create object walls. Adjust padding or offset only when needed to align the imported image and geometry.
- Review the resulting scene, especially the grid alignment and wall, door, and light placement. If an element is missing or shifted, check both the file’s geometry and the relevant importer settings.
The technical account reports that Foundry treats a portal with closed: true as a door. It also reports that Foundry removes the first two characters of a light-color string before using it, and recommends eight-digit AARRGGBB colors. These are implementation-specific details reported by that account, not a guarantee for every importer release; validate them against the version you use.

Does Owlbear Rodeo support .dd2vtt?
The compatibility path described in the technical account is Owlbear Rodeo’s community uvtt-importer extension. That is extension-based support, rather than evidence that Owlbear Rodeo natively imports .dd2vtt files. The account says the extension’s isUniversalVTTData, createWallItems, createDoorItems, and createLightItems functions were run against a sample. That demonstrates reported function-level behavior, not an independently verified live import through Owlbear Rodeo’s user interface, nor the extension’s current distribution or maintenance status. The account and its implementation discussion are available at the technical article.
In that reported behavior, portals marked closed: true become door metadata in the extension. Because this depends on the extension’s implementation, check its current documentation and behavior before relying on door handling in a campaign.

How to export a .dd2vtt file that imports reliably
There is no complete normative schema established by the sources cited here. Build and validate against the importer you intend to use, rather than assuming that a valid-looking JSON file—or the right filename extension—is sufficient.

Exporter checklist
- Include the map image in the representation the target importer reads, together with its supported geometry fields.
- Keep geometry coordinates and grid scaling consistent with the image. The implementation account describes geometry in grid units alongside a pixels-per-grid value, but does not establish a universal coordinate origin or unit system.
- Use the portal structure and properties expected by the target importer for doors. Do not assume that door behavior transfers unchanged between platforms.
- For Foundry light colors, verify the installed importer’s expected string format; the cited account’s eight-digit
AARRGGBBguidance is implementation-specific. - Test representative files containing walls, doors, and lights in each destination you support. A test of importer functions is not the same as confirming a complete, current, live-application workflow.
Diagnose common import failures
- The file is rejected: confirm that the target importer accepts the extension and that the JSON structure matches its expectations. Renaming another file to
.dd2vttdoes not make it a Universal VTT export. - Walls are missing or misplaced: inspect the wall-segment data and coordinate/grid scaling, then check Foundry’s wall-fidelity and object-wall settings if applicable.
- Doors import as walls or do not appear: check the portal representation and the target importer’s interpretation of portal state.
- Lights are absent or have unexpected colors: check the light entries and the target importer’s color handling.
- The map image and geometry do not align: check PPI and coordinates, then review Foundry’s padding and offset settings. The sources do not establish a universal coordinate-origin convention to apply across importers.
How do the import paths differ?
| Destination | Import path established here | Behavior and controls established here | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foundry | Universal Battlemap Importer interface | Accepts .dd2vtt, .df2vtt, and .uvtt; exposes WebP conversion, custom grid PPI, wall fidelity, object walls, padding, and offset. |
Confirm behavior in the installed importer version; controls can affect the scene or image. |
| Owlbear Rodeo | Community uvtt-importer extension, as described in a technical account |
The account reports functions for recognizing Universal VTT data and creating wall, door, and light items from a sample. | Not evidence of native support or a verified live UI import; current distribution and maintenance are not established here. |
| Roll20 | Community UniversalVTTImporter script | The Roll20 wiki describes it as creating Dynamic Lighting walls, windows, and lights. | The wiki’s version note for v0.1.10 is dated August 2022 and is historical, not confirmation of current behavior: Roll20 UniversalVTTImporter wiki. |
These are separate import paths, not a uniform compatibility guarantee. The available descriptions do not establish a current, comparable feature matrix for grid scaling or geometry behavior across all three destinations.
