Start with the platform check: A Bird Story has no documented PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo Switch release. The official Steam listing records a 7 November 2014 release for Windows, macOS and SteamOS + Linux. If you are trying to run it on a console, you are probably using a streamed PC session, a compatibility layer, or a different game with a similar name. The fixes below separate PC game settings from generic console HDMI, audio and display troubleshooting so you do not waste time applying the wrong remedy.
What platforms does A Bird Story officially support?
The Steam listing identifies A Bird Story as a PC title released on 7 November 2014. Its listed operating systems are Windows, macOS and SteamOS + Linux; PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch are not listed. That means there is no documented console edition with its own controller profile, audio menu or display settings to repair.

Identify which of those describes your setup before changing anything. If the game is running locally on Windows, macOS or Linux, use the PC-specific sections. If the game is only visible through a television, receiver, capture device or dock, use the platform signal and audio checks later in this guide.

The table is a triage tool, not proof that a particular component has failed. A game-specific setting can silence only the game, while an HDMI or system-output fault usually affects other applications as well.
Fix controller input on the PC version
Use Steam Input with an Xbox-style layout
Players have reported that a Steam Controller worked after it was configured to emulate an Xbox 360 controller. This is a community workaround, not a guaranteed feature supported by the game developer. It is useful when the game ignores native controller events but responds to the familiar XInput layout.
- Close A Bird Story if it is running.
- Open Steam and select the game in your library.
- Open the game’s controller configuration area and choose a layout that emulates an Xbox 360 pad.
- Apply the layout, reconnect or wake the controller, and launch the game again.
- Test movement and the confirm or interact button at the title screen before changing additional settings.
The player report notes that the in-game Steam overlay did not work, so configuration had to be completed outside the game. Do not wait for an overlay panel to appear as a sign that the controller is unsupported; make the mapping from Steam’s library or controller-management interface first.

- Open Steam’s Big Picture interface.
- Select Manage Game.
- Open Controller Configuration.
- Choose Browse Configs.
- Open the Community category and select a configuration that maps the controller to the game’s expected inputs.
Community layouts can vary by author and may stop working after a Steam update or a hardware change. If a selected layout produces incorrect buttons, return to the configuration screen and choose another layout rather than altering several mappings at once.
Bind the arrow keys and Spacebar
The same player discussion suggests a fallback that does not depend on native gamepad support: map the controller to the keyboard’s arrow keys and Spacebar. Use the directional buttons or stick for the arrow keys, and assign a convenient face button to Spacebar for confirmation or interaction.
- Map up, down, left and right to the four arrow keys.
- Map the primary action button to Spacebar.
- Leave unused buttons unmapped until basic movement and interaction work.
- Test the mapping in a text editor or Steam’s input tester before launching the game, then close the editor so keystrokes cannot affect another application.
This approach treats the controller as a keyboard and can work when the game does not recognize a gamepad at all. It will not create additional game functions; it only sends the keys the game already understands.

- Verify that Steam sees the controller before launching the game.
- Apply the layout while the game is closed, because the reported overlay path was unavailable.
- Disconnect extra gamepads, wheels or virtual input devices temporarily so the intended controller is device one.
- Restart Steam after changing from a native layout to Xbox emulation.
- Use the keyboard directly as a control test. If the keyboard works but every controller layout fails, the problem is input mapping rather than the game window or display.
There is no documented console controller profile to reset because a console edition is not listed. A controller connected to a television or streaming device must be mapped by that device or by the PC session running the game.

Restore missing music and sound effects
Enable BGM and BGS in the F1 menu
The specific in-game audio fix comes from a developer discussion. A player had already verified files and reinstalled, yet still heard no sound. The developer replied: “It definitely sounds like the BGM (background music) and BGS (background sound) options being unchecked caused it.”
- Launch the PC version of A Bird Story.
- Press F1 to open the game’s options menu.
- Find the BGM option and enable it.
- Find the BGS option and enable it.
- Return to the game and test both music and sound effects.
BGM controls background music; BGS controls background sounds. Both can be unchecked independently, so enabling only one may leave part of the soundtrack or effects silent.
If the mouse cursor is not visible
The developer’s reply includes a workaround for a missing cursor: place the cursor around the options before pressing F1, then click to enable the settings. In practice, move the mouse to the area where the BGM and BGS controls should appear, press F1, and click the controls even if the pointer is difficult to see. Confirm the change by leaving the menu and listening for both categories of audio.

Tell a game mute from a system mute
Test another application on the same PC or stream. If other audio works and only A Bird Story is silent, the BGM/BGS settings are the first check. If every application is silent, use the operating-system output device, volume and mute controls before reinstalling the game. Reinstalling cannot correct a muted HDMI receiver, an unplugged headset or an incorrect system output.

Black screen or no picture: generic HDMI troubleshooting
Because no console edition is documented, these are generic platform checks rather than A Bird Story-specific fixes. They apply when a PlayStation 4, streaming device or PC is connected to a television and the display is black, reports no signal or loses the picture when the game starts.
- Secure both ends of the HDMI cable. Replace the cable if its connector is loose or damaged.
- Try a different HDMI input on the television.
- Connect the console or PC directly to the display, bypassing a sound bar, AV receiver, capture device or HDMI switch.
- Turn off the source and the display. Unplug them briefly, reconnect power, turn on the display first, and then start the source.
- Install available system and display firmware updates.
- Test another application or game. A picture that fails everywhere points to the signal path; a picture that fails only during a streamed session points to the streaming or capture configuration.
Changing a game controller layout cannot repair a failed HDMI handshake. Keep the input, audio and video tests separate so one suspected fault does not obscure another.

When the picture is black
Sony’s general PlayStation guidance is to secure or replace the HDMI cable, try another HDMI port, connect the console directly to the display, power-cycle both devices and check for display or console firmware updates. Perform those steps in that order, testing the home screen after each major change. If the home screen itself never appears, the fault is outside the game.

When there is no sound
- Confirm that the television or receiver is not muted and that its volume is audible.
- Set the PlayStation’s audio output to an HDMI device.
- Install the latest system software available for the console.
- Test a different HDMI cable.
- Remove sound bars, receivers and capture devices temporarily, connecting the PlayStation directly to the television.
- Test another game or application. If all content is silent, continue with console and display audio settings rather than the game’s controls.
A direct connection is a diagnostic step, not a permanent requirement. Once audio and video work directly, reconnect one intermediary device at a time to identify which component or setting interrupts the signal.

Nintendo Switch: understand docked silence and test handheld audio
Docked mode intentionally disables the built-in speakers
Nintendo states that the Switch’s built-in speakers automatically turn off while the console is docked. Silence from the handheld speakers in docked mode is therefore expected; listen through the television, receiver or other selected HDMI audio device instead. This behavior is not evidence that A Bird Story is muting itself.
Handheld or tabletop mode has no sound
- Install the latest Nintendo Switch system update.
- Unplug wired headphones.
- Disconnect paired Bluetooth audio devices.
- Check the Mute when Headphones are Disconnected setting and disable it if you want the speakers to resume after unplugging headphones.
- Restart the Switch.
- Raise the console volume and test another game or application.
If other software also remains silent after those checks, Nintendo directs the owner to service. Do not treat a docked speaker shutdown or a console-wide audio failure as a game-specific setting.

This separation prevents a common mistake: reinstalling a PC game to solve a television’s HDMI problem, or changing game audio options to solve a console-wide mute.

You can troubleshoot the console’s controller connection, HDMI path, audio output and streaming setup. You cannot apply the PC version’s F1 BGM/BGS menu unless the PC build is what you are actually running. Likewise, Steam Input layouts apply to the Steam installation and its connected controller, not to a native PlayStation, Xbox or Switch game.
If you expected a downloadable console edition, verify the product name and store listing before continuing. The documented listing for this title names Windows, macOS and SteamOS + Linux only. A different product with a similar name needs its own support instructions.
