For a manageable Windows PC check-in, spend about 30 minutes reviewing updates, running a quick security scan, checking storage, trimming startup apps, and confirming your backup. The time is for active review—not a guarantee that downloads, scans, installations, or syncing will finish within half an hour. This routine can help you catch common issues, but it cannot fix every cause of a slow PC.
What should I do to maintain my PC?
Use this sequence as a practical check-in. The minute estimates are suggested allocations, not measured task times or a Microsoft-validated schedule. You can stop when the active review is done and let a scan, update, or backup continue in the background.

- Check Windows Update — about 5 minutes of active review. Open Settings > Windows Update and check for updates. Review what is available and install appropriate updates; a download, installation, or restart may take longer than your review window. Microsoft says updates often include fixes and performance improvements and recommends staying current to address security risks. Optional driver updates may appear, but do not install every optional driver automatically—consider whether it applies to your device or resolves a specific issue.
- Start a Windows Security quick scan — about 5 minutes to start and review. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Quick scan. Malware can use processor and disk resources, so a scan is a useful check when performance has changed. A quick scan does not guarantee that every threat will be found, and it may take longer than five minutes.
- Review storage — about 8 minutes. Open Settings > System > Storage. Look at Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations and inspect the categories before selecting anything to remove. You may also use Disk Cleanup for temporary and system files. Keep files you do not recognize or may need; do not treat Downloads or system-file categories as safe to delete without checking their contents and purpose.
- Review startup and unused apps — about 7 minutes. Open Task Manager and select Startup apps. Disable only entries you recognize and do not need to launch automatically. Disabling a startup item is not the same as uninstalling its program. Remove an unused application only when you know what it is and are comfortable losing it.
- Check your backup — about 5 minutes. Open Windows Backup and check which folders are selected and whether they are backed up. If you rely on local copies, check File History separately. A backup check is distinct from cleanup: deleting a file in a synced cloud folder may also remove it from the cloud.
How often should I clean up my Windows computer?
There is no universal schedule that every PC needs. Treat this as a recurring review—monthly is a reasonable calendar reminder if you want a simple habit, not a Microsoft requirement. You can check sooner after noticing low storage, unexpected startup activity, missed updates, or a change in performance. Windows also performs automatic maintenance: Microsoft Learn says its scheduling system chooses times with the aim of minimizing impact on the user, PC performance, and energy efficiency. A manual check-in complements that scheduling; it does not replace it.
What can I safely delete from my PC?
Use Windows’ storage categories as a prompt to review, not as permission to delete everything. In Settings > System > Storage, inspect Cleanup recommendations and the files they identify. Storage Sense can automate selected cleanup behavior, while Cleanup recommendations and Disk Cleanup let you review items more directly. Choose manual review when you are unsure what a category contains.

- Remove temporary files or unused applications only after checking what Windows has selected and confirming you do not need the items.
- Review large or unused files individually if they may include personal documents, project files, or media you want to keep.
- Be especially cautious with cloud-synced files: deleting a synced item may propagate the deletion to other devices or the cloud account.
- Do not delete Downloads or system files as a blanket maintenance step.
How do I make my Windows PC run better?
Start with the checks above, then use what you find to choose a next step. Microsoft identifies several possible causes of poor performance, including limited storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, and hardware that no longer meets current needs. Because causes differ, there is no single cleanup action or guaranteed performance gain. Microsoft also cautions that older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps.
If the same problem remains, note when it occurs and which resource or app appears busy before making more changes. On a work- or school-managed PC, follow your organization’s policies before changing startup apps, installing updates, or removing software. Prefer Windows’ built-in controls over aggressive registry edits or unfamiliar “PC cleaner” utilities; Microsoft also identifies its PC Manager app as a tool for storage cleanup, startup management, and performance diagnosis.

Windows Backup and File History serve different purposes. Windows Backup is focused on consumer devices using a personal Microsoft account; it can sync selected folders to OneDrive. Microsoft states that a free Microsoft account includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage, so check available space before relying on it for all selected files. File History can save file copies to an external drive or a network location.

What Windows 10 users need to know
The Windows settings guidance above applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11, though labels can vary by version. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date.
