Why Browser Fingerprinting Still Takes More Than a Few Lines of Code

Browser fingerprinting takes more than a few lines of code to make reliable—and no single defense can eliminate every way a site may identify a browser.

A short script can collect browser signals; building a dependable fingerprinting system—and defending against one—takes much more. The hard part is combining changing, correlated observations, recognizing visits across contexts, and deciding what counts as useful identification without breaking legitimate web features. Browser defenses can reduce exposure, but they cannot promise invisibility.

What browser fingerprinting identifies

The W3C Privacy Working Group defines browser fingerprinting as a site’s capability to identify or re-identify a visiting user, user agent, or device through configuration settings or other observable characteristics. The term describes a capability, not necessarily a tracking purpose: fingerprinting can be used for security, such as recognizing a returning user during authentication, as well as for tracking.

A fingerprint is generally assembled from characteristics a site can observe, rather than being a single conventional cookie stored in the browser. A short code snippet might request a few properties, but that is only one part of the process. Turning observations into a useful identification system means deciding which signals to use, accounting for overlap and noise, connecting visits, and handling browser or device changes.

Why a few signals do not make a reliable fingerprint

Signals overlap and change

Browser properties are not independent clues whose individual strengths can simply be added together. Google Research’s WWW 2024 study, drawing on API calls reported by tens of millions of real Chrome browsers, notes that web APIs are dependent and correlated. Earlier approaches that summed API entropies independently can therefore grossly overestimate fingerprinting risk. A property that looks distinctive on its own may add little once other observations are known.

Observations can also vary as browsers, devices, settings, and the conditions of a visit change. A system must distinguish meaningful differences from variation, then decide whether a later visit is likely to belong to the same browser or user. A handful of requested properties does not, by itself, identify everyone or establish a dependable match.

The collection surface is larger than one script

The W3C distinguishes passive fingerprinting, which uses characteristics observable in web requests without client-side code, from active fingerprinting, which queries features using code running in the browser. It also describes fingerprinting based on transient events and cookie-like mechanisms. The surface can include implemented web features and lower layers such as differences in TCP connections, not just one JavaScript API.

Why measurement misses real-world fingerprinting

What a site does during an automated crawl may differ from what it does with a real visitor. In Beyond the Crawl: Unmasking Browser Fingerprinting in Real User Interactions, a 2025 preprint reports a 10-week study of 30 participants who used a Chrome extension while visiting 3,000 top-ranked websites. The study identified 471 fingerprinting websites in participants’ browsing observations; its automated crawl missed 211 of them, or 45% of the sites identified in that study.

The authors connect the gap to pages behind authentication, bot detection, and scripts that run only after interaction or consent. That 45% is a result for this study’s participants, sites, and methods—not an estimate of the share of all websites that fingerprint visitors. The authors also report collection issues affecting some signal categories, so the study does not establish a universal ranking of fingerprinting techniques.

The Google Research study offers a complementary caution: even when API calls are observed at large scale, correlated signals complicate estimates of how distinctive a browser is. Its sample scale describes tens of millions of real Chrome browsers; it is not a measure of how common fingerprinting is across the web.

Computer Privacy Screen Filter for 24 Inch 16:9 Aspect Ratio Monitor
  • Privacy Screen Filter Size: If the visible area of your display has the following dimension: Width x Height (Exclude Frame/Arrow 1 to 3 mm errors): 20 15/16" x 11 13/16" (532 mm x 299 mm), then this filter is good for you. Very Important to double check your screen's Width and Height excluding frame before ordering. It's not recommended to make your selection based solely on your screen's diagonal size
  • Left and Right Privacy: Not block visibility directly behind you, regardless of distance. The privacy filter makes the screen appear dark when looking at it from an angle (left and right 30 to 180 degree), but clear when looking directly at it. To change the privacy levels, simply adjust your monitor's brightness level accordingly
  • Matte and Glossy Sides: It's a reversible privacy screen filter, giving you the flexibility to choose glossy or matte finish. The matte side will have less glare, however the glossy side will have stronger privacy
  • Perfect for Open Workspaces: Ensure your working space is bright and well lit. Privacy screens do not work in dimly lit areas
  • Two Installation Option: Option 1 uses clear double side adhesive strips that securely attach to any computer screen. Option 2 (for computer screens with a raised bezel only) uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to take out the privacy screen filter easily as needed

Why clearing cookies or using a VPN may not stop it

Cookie clearing removes a different kind of state

Clearing cookies can remove stored identifiers, but it does not necessarily change the browser characteristics a site can observe again. The W3C says fingerprinting can support cross-origin correlation even where cookie policy blocks cookie access, and that clearing cookies does not prevent further correlation based on fingerprinting. The Electronic Frontier Foundation’s Surveillance Self-Defense guide, last reviewed August 27, 2024, makes the same practical distinction.

A VPN changes the network route, not the browser profile

A VPN can change network routing and the IP address visible to a site, but it does not, by itself, standardize graphics, fonts, hardware-related signals, or other browser properties. The W3C specifically notes that VPN use does not prevent further fingerprint-based correlation. It may address other privacy concerns, but it is not a complete defense against browser fingerprinting.

What defenses can reduce exposure—and what they trade off

Different defenses address different parts of the problem. The Electronic Frontier Foundation’s 2024 guide and Mozilla’s 2025 Firefox announcement describe approaches with distinct coverage and limitations:

Approach What it can help with Important limitation or trade-off
Standardize browser characteristics Make users’ browsers look more alike, so an individual is harder to distinguish. The EFF describes Tor Browser as using this strategy. Changing isolated settings can make a browser more unusual. Standardization is not a guarantee against every fingerprinting method.
Limit or normalize exposed information Reduce selected signals available to sites. Mozilla says Firefox protections address selected graphics, font, and hardware information. Protections cover selected information rather than every possible signal, and stricter limits may affect legitimate site functions.
Block known tracker scripts Prevent many known third-party fingerprinting trackers from running. Blocking lists can miss unknown trackers and fingerprinting performed by the site being visited; this is risk reduction, not strong anonymity.
Restrict access to particular features Reduce the information sites can obtain through those features. Features can have legitimate uses. Mozilla cites access to a real time zone for calendars, scheduling, and conferencing.

Firefox’s announced protections are mode-specific in the cited account

On November 10, 2025, Mozilla announced new Firefox 145 fingerprinting protections, saying they were initially available in Private Browsing and Enhanced Tracking Protection Strict mode while the company worked toward enabling them by default. Mozilla reported: “Our research shows these improvements cut the percentage of users seen as unique by almost half.” That is Mozilla’s reported research result, not a guarantee for an individual or a universal independent comparison between browsers.

Why fingerprinting is not a solved problem

For someone building a system, collecting a few observable properties is only a starting point. A useful system must select and combine signals, account for dependencies and variation, link observations across visits, and adapt as browsers and web features change. Real-world behavior may also depend on the page, user interaction, consent, authentication, and anti-automation measures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For someone trying to prevent identification, there is no single setting that covers every surface. A defense may standardize some signals, limit others, or block known scripts while leaving first-party, unknown, passive, or lower-layer techniques outside its reach. It must also weigh privacy against website functions that rely on access to information such as time zone.

The W3C Privacy Working Group’s 2025 note states that complete elimination of fingerprinting by a determined adversary through solely technical means that are widely deployed is implausible. That does not mean privacy defenses are futile. The W3C identifies more bounded goals, including making active fingerprinting detectable, minimizing new passive fingerprinting surface, and making cookie-like state clearable. The practical goal is to reduce exposure for a defined threat model, not to promise that a browser will be invisible.
