An excavation in the Adrasan area recovered 6,511 intact ceramic tableware pieces from a shipwreck described in 2026 reporting as about 2,100 years old. The dishes survived because they had been nested, packed in wooden crates and cushioned with clay. The number refers to intact pieces from the first excavation season—not necessarily the ship’s entire original cargo.
How did so many dishes survive the wreck?
The cargo had been packed to protect fragile tableware in transit. Dishes were nested inside one another, loaded into wooden crates and separated with clay. The clay acted as a shock absorber, and the reported packing system was effective enough that the plates did not break when the ship sank.

This is evidence of deliberate cargo handling, not proof that every object aboard survived. The excavation also recovered thousands of ceramic fragments, which were treated separately from the intact pieces.

What was in the cargo?
The intact finds comprise 6,511 ceramic tableware pieces, spanning 122 distinct dish types, according to 2026 reporting carried by GaitherNews. That range offers a detailed record of the forms available for ancient table settings; it does not, by itself, establish who ordered the dishes or who was meant to use them.

The pieces are described as luxury tableware. Their reported production center was Rhosus, identified with modern Arsuz on the Iskenderun Peninsula, more than 250 nautical miles east of Adrasan. The distance indicates separation between the manufacturing origin and wreck area, but it does not establish the ship’s precise route or final destination.
Where are the artifacts now?
The intact pieces were transferred to Antalya Museum for conservation. The recovered fragments went to Akdeniz University’s Conservation and Restoration Laboratory. The reported division reflects two parts of the work: conserving complete objects and treating the broken material.

What is known—and what remains uncertain?
The available account describes the wreck as approximately 2,100 years old and places it in the Adrasan area. It does not establish a formal wreck name, an exact sinking date, the excavation directors, or the project designation. It also does not identify the vessel, its crew, its owners or the full itinerary. The finds are remarkable for their quantity and variety, but the available account does not support ranking the wreck as the largest or best-preserved of its kind.
