Usually, no separate box is needed—but Google Home still requires hub functionality for Matter devices. A compatible Google speaker, Nest display, Nest Wifi Pro, or Google TV Streamer (4K) may already provide it. If your Matter devices use Thread, that device must also be a Thread border router. Check the exact model, your router’s IPv6 support, and the device’s Matter protocol before buying hardware.
What Google Home requires today
Google’s Matter setup checklist includes a Google Account, home Wi-Fi, IPv6 enabled on the router, a compatible Matter device, a compatible mobile device, and a Matter-enabled Google Home hub. “Hub” describes a function, not necessarily a product you must purchase separately.
Google describes the hub as the device that connects Matter equipment to Google Home and coordinates control. Commands run locally over Wi-Fi or Thread when you are home. When you are away, the request goes through Google’s cloud to the hub, which then communicates with the device locally.
Devices that can already be your Matter hub
Google’s current compatibility list includes these Wi-Fi Matter hubs:

| Device | Matter over Wi-Fi | Matter over Thread |
|---|---|---|
| Google Home Speaker (2026) | Yes | Yes |
| Nest Audio | Yes | Wi-Fi only |

| Nest Wifi Pro (Wi-Fi 6E) | Yes | Yes |
| Google TV Streamer (4K) | Yes | Yes |

The list is model-specific. A Google speaker or display is not automatically a Thread border router simply because it works with Google Home. The Google Home Speaker (2026), for example, is specified with Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, and a Thread 1.3 border router.
When Thread changes the answer
Matter devices use Wi-Fi, Thread, or sometimes either protocol. A Matter-over-Wi-Fi product needs a compatible Wi-Fi Matter hub. A Matter-over-Thread product needs a hub that is also a Thread border router.

For a mixed installation containing Wi-Fi and Thread products, use a Google model listed for both protocols. Google currently lists the Google Home Speaker (2026), Nest Hub (2nd generation), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro (Wi-Fi 6E), and Google TV Streamer (4K) in that category.
How to identify the right protocol
- Check the device packaging or specification page for “Matter over Wi-Fi” or “Matter over Thread.”
- Confirm the exact generation of your Nest Hub, router, speaker, or streamer.
- Do not assume that a Matter certification alone means the device uses Wi-Fi; Matter is the standard, while Wi-Fi and Thread are transport networks.
IPv6 is a prerequisite, not an optional extra
Google says IPv6 must be enabled on the home wireless network for Matter to work properly. Without it, setup can appear to succeed while control or other functions later fail. Before buying a hub, open your router’s network settings and verify IPv6 support and activation. If your internet provider or router disables IPv6, resolve that limitation first.

How to decide whether you need another device
- Inventory existing Google hardware. Record the exact model and generation of every Nest speaker, display, Nest Wifi unit, and Google TV Streamer.
- Identify your Matter devices’ transports. Separate Wi-Fi products from Thread products; check whether any product supports both.
- Match the hub to the most demanding protocol. Wi-Fi-only Matter needs a listed Wi-Fi hub. Any Thread product needs a listed Thread border router.
- Check Google Home category support. Matter device categories can arrive at different times on different platforms, so verify that the specific category is supported.
- Confirm IPv6 and network conditions. Enable IPv6 on the router before pairing.
- Only then consider buying hardware. Choose a device whose main purpose you also want—a display, router, speaker, or TV streamer—rather than purchasing a dedicated hub solely for the word “Matter.”
What about devices that are not Matter?
“Works with Google Home” is a broader label than Matter. Non-Matter products may use the manufacturer’s cloud service, bridge, or setup process. Google directs users to the relevant manufacturer instructions for those devices; they do not all require the same type of hub.
Seamless Setup products
Google’s Seamless Setup path allows certain supported devices to be added without a separate bridge, hub, or maker app. The documented flow still requires a Google smart speaker or display or a Nest Wifi point, plus an end device that supports Seamless Setup. Google’s examples include the Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Plug Mini HS105 and certain Cync products. This is a separate setup path from Matter and should not be used as proof that every Google Home device is hub-free.
Do not confuse a Matter hub with router bridge mode
Router bridge mode is a network configuration used to address arrangements such as double NAT. Google’s bridge-mode guidance applies to specified Nest Wifi and Google Wifi setups and warns that enabling it can disable some features. A Matter hub, by contrast, is the Google Home device that provides smart-home control and connectivity. Changing a router to bridge mode does not turn it into a Matter hub and does not replace a Thread border router.

The Google TV Streamer (4K) is one conditional option because Google lists it as supporting Matter over both Wi-Fi and Thread. Buy it only after confirming that no existing device already provides the required functions and that you also want a TV streamer. Availability and supported device lists can vary by market and change over time, so verify the current model information before purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Nest Hub act as a Google Home Matter hub?
Yes. Nest Hub (1st generation) supports Matter over Wi-Fi. Nest Hub (2nd generation) and Nest Hub Max are listed for Matter over both Wi-Fi and Thread.
Do I need a Thread border router for every Matter device?
No. You need one when a Matter device communicates over Thread. Matter-over-Wi-Fi devices do not indicate that requirement.
