The iPhone 18 Pro looks much like last year’s phone, but most of what changed is inside and in the main camera. If you own an iPhone 17 Pro and don’t care about a variable-aperture lens, a larger vapor chamber, or a faster chip, this is a modest step. If you’re coming from an older phone, or you want finer control over the main camera, it’s a stronger buy. This article draws on Apple’s announcement and spec pages and on published reviews from The Guardian, TechRadar, IT Pro and 9to5Mac. It is not a hands-on test, and it contains no original benchmarks or battery measurements.
What’s actually new
Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026. Apple’s headline features for the pair are:
- A variable-aperture 48MP Fusion Main camera
- The A20 Pro chip
- A next-generation vapor chamber for cooling
- A smaller Dynamic Island
- iOS 27
The Guardian’s review of the smaller Pro, which carries this article’s title, sums up the generational step as longer battery life, faster chips and a variable aperture on the main camera. That is a short list, but it covers the parts of a phone people use most.
The variable-aperture main camera
This is the change a camera-minded buyer is most likely to notice. A variable aperture lets the main lens change how wide it opens. In practice that means more control over how much light reaches the sensor and over depth of field, which is how much of a scene looks sharp.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
The reviews describe it as a capability, not a guarantee that every photo improves. For casual point-and-shoot use, the phone’s automatic processing still does most of the work, and many photos will look much as they did on the 17 Pro. The benefit is greater for people who want to shape a shot deliberately. 9to5Mac’s reviewer, who used both Pro models for a week, singles out the new camera among the highlights.
A20 Pro and the vapor chamber
Apple makes the performance claim itself: “Both models feature a smaller and even more useful Dynamic Island, as well as A20 Pro and a next-generation vapor chamber that together deliver the highest sustained performance in iPhone history.” That is a manufacturer statement, not an independent result.
IT Pro describes the larger vapor chamber and says its reviewer noticed some heat during the initial setup but not during its tests. That is one publication’s account and not a controlled thermal comparison. Setup is a heavy period of background work, so warmth then is common on many phones. Sustained gaming, long video recording and heavy photo processing are where better cooling should matter most. For email, messaging and browsing, any current iPhone Pro is already fast.

Battery life
The Guardian lists longer battery life among the generation’s gains, and 9to5Mac’s reviewer also names battery life as a strength. No source reviewed here provides a controlled runtime figure for the smaller Pro, so treat the gain as directional.

It should not be read as a claim about the smaller Pro.
Design: the familiar look
TechRadar describes the body and camera plateau as continuing the previous design direction, and concludes that these phones refine the formula rather than reinvent it. The one visible exterior change Apple points to is the smaller Dynamic Island. 9to5Mac’s reviewer also mentions weight as a point of interest, so check how the phone feels in hand if size and heft matter to you.

Apple Support lists IP68 water and dust resistance, rated to a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes under IEC standard 60529. That is a laboratory rating, not a promise against water damage, and liquid damage is typically not covered by warranty.
Apple Intelligence and the new Siri
Apple’s technical page describes a next generation of Apple Intelligence and Siri AI. Availability is the catch. At the time of its review, TechRadar reported that the new Siri was in beta and available in the US with a waitlist. If AI features are part of your reason to upgrade, check current availability and language support in your country first.
Price and storage
TechRadar reports these launch prices for the 256GB model, which went on sale September 18, 2026:

From iPhone 17 Pro
TechRadar suggests the upgrade is less compelling if you don’t care about the changes. That fits the evidence. The look is nearly the same, and the gains are a new camera capability, a faster chip, better cooling and longer battery life. Upgrade if you want the camera control or push the phone hard. Otherwise a 17 Pro should keep serving you well.
From an older iPhone
The case is stronger, because you gain several generations of chip, camera and battery improvements at once, plus iOS 27 support for years to come.

Pro or Pro Max
Both share the main features above. The Max adds scale, and Apple’s strongest battery claim applies to it alone. If long battery life matters more than pocketability, the Max is the one to consider. If you want a phone that is easier to carry and use one-handed, the smaller Pro gives you the same headline camera and chip.
What the evidence doesn’t tell us
There is no common test table comparing the 18 Pro, the 17 Pro and the Pro Max for battery runtime, sustained performance or thermals. The reviews are consistently positive, but they are largely subjective assessments by individual reviewers, and Apple’s performance claims come from Apple.
The Bottom Line
The iPhone 18 Pro is a refinement in a familiar body. It is worth it if you’re upgrading from an older iPhone or want the variable-aperture camera and better sustained performance. For most iPhone 17 Pro owners, it’s optional.
