But it is not a universal percentile, a guarantee of job readiness, or a direct measure of workplace productivity. To judge what your score means, consider accuracy, test conditions and how much of your work actually involves entering text.
How 70 WPM compares with the available benchmark
A 2018 study by Dhakal, Feit, Kristensson and Oulasvirta analyzed more than 136 million keystrokes from 168,000 volunteers who completed an online sentence-transcription test. The authors reported an average of 52 WPM in that sample, with substantial variation and a skewed distribution. That makes 70 WPM higher than the study’s average, but the sample was not a random survey of the population, so it cannot establish a universal percentile for your score. The study grouped participants into eight typing-behaviour clusters. Average speeds across those groups ranged from about 46.5 to 68.35 WPM; the fastest cluster’s average was 68.35 WPM. Those are results for the study’s clusters, not a general standard or a prediction of how any individual will type.
Does typing faster improve productivity?
Typing quickly can reduce the time needed to enter a fixed amount of text. It does not show how much more productive someone will be overall: the study measured typing performance, not job output, writing quality, planning, research, editing or other work activities.

Speed matters most when text entry is a real bottleneck. If a task is mainly limited by decisions, reading, interruptions or revision, a higher WPM may make little difference to its completion time. There is no defensible productivity multiplier that can be calculated from WPM alone using this study.
Why accuracy matters alongside speed
A useful score is not just the fastest number on screen. Consider how many errors you make and how much correction or cleanup the text needs. The study measured errors as well as speed and reported that faster typists generally made fewer errors in its dataset. That is an association within this study, not proof that increasing your speed will improve your accuracy.

For practical comparison, track WPM and accuracy together. A slightly slower result that is steady and needs little correction may be more useful than a faster attempt that requires substantial cleanup.
How to interpret and retest your score
- Keep conditions consistent. Use the same language, test duration, text type, keyboard and scoring rules when comparing results over time.
- Account for test format. A short burst test is not automatically comparable with a longer transcription test. The study’s 52 WPM average came from online sentence transcription, not every possible test format.
- Repeat the attempt. One score describes one session. A repeatable pattern under similar conditions is more informative for personal progress.
- Use the relevant hiring test. If a job requires a typing score, check the employer’s stated requirement or assessment. This study does not set job-specific thresholds.
What 70 WPM can—and cannot—tell you
A 70 WPM result is a strong typing speed relative to the average in the cited study. It does not, on its own, reveal your population percentile, prove you meet a particular employer’s standard, or quantify your productivity. For a meaningful personal benchmark, pair speed with accuracy and compare tests performed under similar conditions.
