What permanent PDF redaction does—and what a black box does not
Redaction removes selected content from the PDF rather than merely placing a visible shape over it. In Adobe’s documented workflow, you first mark text or images for removal and then apply the marks. Adobe warns that visual approaches such as changing text color can be unreliable. See Adobe’s guide to redacting a PDF.

A drawing or annotation can leave the original text underneath. If someone can select, search, copy, or otherwise extract that text, the cover-up has failed. Use a tool that explicitly applies redactions, not a drawing, highlight, white font, or black shape.

Adobe’s desktop tutorial, updated June 28, 2026, identifies the feature as available in Acrobat Pro, Premium, or Studio. Its documented labels are listed below; menus may change over time. Follow the equivalent dedicated redaction workflow if you use another editor.

- Make a working copy. Keep the original unchanged, and open the copy in Acrobat.
- Open the redaction tool. Choose All tools > Redact a PDF.
- Mark the content. Select Redact text and images, then drag over the text or image to remove. Adobe also documents selecting whole pages for redaction.
- Apply the marks. Choose Apply and confirm the removal when prompted. Marking alone is not the same as applying.
- Sanitize and save separately. Continue through the prompt to remove hidden information, then save the sanitized document under a new filename.
- Review the saved output. Reopen it and inspect the affected pages and content before sharing.

Find repeated sensitive text before applying redactions
A name, account number, or other detail may appear in several places. Acrobat’s Find text and redact feature can search for a word or phrase, multiple terms, or supported patterns. Adobe’s help page, updated September 23, 2025, describes reviewing individual matches or selecting all occurrences, choosing whole- or partial-word matching, marking the results, applying redactions, and saving the sanitized document. Pattern examples in Adobe’s guidance include phone numbers, card numbers, email addresses, Social Security numbers, and dates. See Adobe’s instructions for searching and redacting text.

- Review search matches before selecting them all; an ordinary word or number may appear in a context you do not intend to remove.
- Check alternate spellings, formats, and partial matches if the same information may be written more than one way.
- Inspect the pages after applying redactions to catch occurrences that search did not find.
Sanitize hidden information as a separate step
Removing visible text is not the same as removing every other kind of information stored in a PDF. Adobe distinguishes redaction of visible text and graphics from sanitization of hidden data. Depending on the file, hidden information can include metadata, embedded content, scripts, comments, attachments, hidden layers, form data, and information from previous saves. Verify the output, but do not treat a quick check as proof
Reopen the saved file and check that the redacted area looks right. Searching for the term or trying to select and copy it can catch an obvious visual overlay that left text behind. These checks are useful quality control, but they cannot establish that no structural clue remains in the PDF.
A 2023 paper by Maxwell Bland, Anushya Iyer, and Kirill Levchenko, published in Proceedings on Privacy Enhancing Technologies, reported that some PDFs retained glyph-position information that could reveal clues about redacted text even after the text itself had been removed. The authors examined 11 redaction toolkits and reported more than 6,000 non-excising redactions in the U.S. court documents in their studied corpus. Those figures describe the paper’s tools and data, not all PDF software or court filings. The study also reported a 14% correct identification result for a surname in its specific Microsoft Word-generated PDF experiment; that is not a general failure rate for redaction software. The paper’s findings are scoped to the products and corpora examined. Adobe’s current workflow documentation describes how to redact and sanitize PDFs, but the sources cited here do not establish whether current product builds have fully addressed the specific glyph-position issue. Do not assume either that a current editor is vulnerable or that the concern is resolved solely because its workflow applies redactions.

The authors recommended redacting surrounding context where feasible because short redactions, such as a name or one or two words, can be especially vulnerable to inference. That is a risk-reduction measure, not a guarantee. If disclosure could cause serious harm or the document is subject to formal rules, follow the applicable requirements and consider whether sharing a redacted PDF is appropriate at all.

Choosing a PDF editor for redaction
Before using an editor, confirm that it offers a dedicated operation that applies redactions—not just annotations or shapes. Check whether it can search repeated terms or patterns, sanitize hidden information, handle the relevant document and page scope, and save an output you can review. The workflow details cited here are verified for Acrobat; they do not establish a ranking of other editors.
