If Amazon Music is buffering, stuck on its loading screen, refusing to start songs, or showing tracks in gray, begin with the connection and the app’s current state. Confirm that Wi‑Fi or mobile data works, allow Amazon Music to use cellular data, force-stop and reopen the app, then update it. If titles are missing, refresh the library; if tracks remain unavailable, check your subscription, catalog availability and offline-download status. The seven fixes below separate network, app, library, account and HD-audio problems so you can use the shortest path to a working player.
First identify what “Amazon Music not working” means
Different symptoms point to different causes. Buffering and pauses usually begin with the connection or cellular permission. A loading spinner that never finishes is more often an app process, cache, update or device-software problem. Missing or gray titles require a library, plan, catalog or offline check. HD and Ultra HD playback adds a hardware requirement that ordinary playback does not.

| Symptom | Most likely area | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Music buffers, pauses or never starts | Internet connection, mobile-data permission or a stalled app process | Fixes 1 and 2 |
| App remains on a loading screen | App state, cache, device software or a failed installation | Fixes 2, 3, 5 and 6 |
| Recently bought or added music is missing | Library synchronization | Fixes 3 and 4 |
| Songs are grayed out | Subscription, catalog, offline license or required re-download | Fix 7 |
| HD or Ultra HD will not play correctly | Connection or hardware below 16-bit/44.1 kHz capability | Fixes 1 and 7 |
Work through the fixes in order. After each one, try the same song again rather than changing several settings at once; that makes it clear which condition resolved the failure.

Amazon’s streaming guidance is direct: “To stream music without issues, you need a strong Internet connection.” A weak or interrupted link can look like an Amazon Music fault because the app opens normally while audio repeatedly pauses or remains at zero percent.

Test Wi‑Fi or mobile service
- Open another app or website on the same device and load new content. If that also fails, reconnect to Wi‑Fi or move to an area with reliable mobile coverage.
- On Wi‑Fi, turn Wi‑Fi off and on, reconnect to the correct network and retry the track. If possible, test a different network to distinguish a home-network problem from an app problem.
- On mobile data, confirm that data service is active and that your plan has not reached its allowance. Streaming over a congested or weak cellular signal can cause repeated pauses.
Allow Amazon Music to use cellular data
If songs work on Wi‑Fi but not away from home, the app may be blocked from mobile data.
- iPhone or iPad: open Settings, choose Cellular (or Mobile Data), find Amazon Music and turn its switch on.
- Android: open Settings, go to Apps or Applications, select Amazon Music, then open Mobile data or Data usage and allow cellular/background data. Names vary by Android manufacturer.
- Fire tablet: check the tablet’s network and data controls, then confirm Amazon Music is allowed to connect when using the available mobile or metered connection.
Retry with a normal-quality track first. If ordinary playback works but HD does not, continue to the HD and Ultra HD checks in Fix 7 instead of repeatedly resetting the network.
Fix 2: Force-stop and reopen Amazon Music
A temporary app process can survive a network handoff, screen lock or failed playback request. Amazon’s streaming guidance recommends force-stopping and reopening Amazon Music, making this the quickest recovery step after confirming that the connection itself works.
- Android: open Settings, choose Apps, select Amazon Music and tap Force stop. Confirm, wait a few seconds, then launch Amazon Music again.
- Fire tablet: open Settings, Apps (or Applications), Amazon Music and the option to force-stop or close the app. Reopen it from the home screen.
- iPhone or iPad: open the app switcher and swipe Amazon Music away, then launch it again. On devices with a Home button, double-click Home first; on Face ID models, swipe up from the bottom and pause.
- Windows or Mac: quit Amazon Music completely rather than closing only its window, then start it again. If the desktop app will not quit, use the operating system’s standard force-quit control.
Play a title that previously failed. If the app now works, the problem was a transient process state. If it immediately returns to a loading screen, do not keep force-stopping it; move to updating and cache or data refresh.

Fix 3: Update Amazon Music and the device
Missing songs can result from an outdated library client, while a loading screen can persist when the app and device software are out of sync. Amazon advises refreshing the library and installing the latest Amazon Music version. Install pending operating-system updates as well when loading remains stuck.
Update the app from the correct store
- Android phone or tablet: open Google Play, search for Amazon Music, and tap Update when offered.
- iPhone or iPad: open the App Store, tap your account icon, locate Amazon Music in the available updates and tap Update.
- Fire tablet: open the Amazon Appstore, find Amazon Music and install its update.
- Windows or Mac: use the desktop app’s own update prompt if one appears, or install the current release offered by the official Amazon Music desktop download.
Install device software updates
Open your device’s system-update screen, install the pending update and restart when prompted. Keep the device connected to power and a reliable network during the installation. After the restart, open Amazon Music and test both a recently added title and an older title; this checks library visibility as well as playback.
Fix 4: Refresh My Music when titles are missing
If a recently purchased or added song does not appear, refreshing the local library is more appropriate than reinstalling the app. Amazon documents the Refresh My Music command for this situation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Amazon Music.
- Open Settings. The gear icon or your profile menu contains Settings depending on the platform and app version.
- Choose Refresh My Music and wait for the synchronization to finish.
- Search for the missing artist, album or track again, then try playback.
Keep the app connected while the refresh runs. Closing it during synchronization can leave the local list incomplete. If the title appears after the refresh but will not play, treat that as a playback or account issue and continue with Fixes 1, 2 and 7 rather than repeating the library refresh.

Fix 5: Clear the cache or refresh app data
Corrupted temporary data can leave Amazon Music stuck loading or display an old library state. The correct cleanup differs by platform: Android and Fire tablets expose a cache command, while iOS does not provide a full cache-clear control inside Amazon Music.
Android and Fire tablets: clear the Amazon Music cache
- Open the device’s Settings.
- Choose Apps or Applications, then Amazon Music.
- Open Storage (the label may be Storage & cache).
- Tap Clear Cache, not the control that erases all application data unless you are prepared to sign in and rebuild local settings.
- Launch Amazon Music and test the problem track.
Cache clearing removes temporary files, not your Amazon account or purchased catalog. Downloaded offline music may need attention if the app asks you to download titles again after a later update or account refresh.
iPhone and iPad: use Refresh My Music
Amazon Music on iOS does not offer the same full cache-clear control. Use Settings > Refresh My Music inside the app. If the application itself remains damaged after updating, use the reinstall sequence in Fix 6.

Windows and Mac: resync the desktop app
Sign out of Amazon Music, quit it, reopen it and sign back in. This triggers a fresh library synchronization. Amazon also documents removing the local Amazon Music Data folder and reloading music as a desktop troubleshooting step. Use the operating system’s file tools to locate that folder for your installation, and make a backup of any personal files before deleting local data. Local downloads may have to be downloaded again after the reset.

Fix 6: Reinstall Amazon Music when loading never finishes
If force-stopping, updating and clearing temporary data do not move the app past its loading screen, use a clean reinstall. Amazon staff guidance for a stuck loading page follows this order: restart the device, check app and device updates, then uninstall and reinstall Amazon Music.
- Restart the phone, tablet or computer. This closes background processes that a normal app exit can leave running.
- Install every available Amazon Music update and device-software update.
- Uninstall Amazon Music using the device’s normal app-removal command.
- Restart once more if the operating system requests it.
- Reinstall Amazon Music from Google Play, the App Store, the Amazon Appstore or the official desktop installer for your platform.
- Sign in with the Amazon account that owns the subscription or purchased music, allow the library to load and test streaming before restoring offline downloads.
A reinstall removes the local app installation. It does not restore titles that are no longer in the catalog or covered by your current plan, and any offline downloads that the app requires you to fetch again must be re-downloaded.

Gray songs are not always a technical failure. Amazon identifies several account and catalog conditions that can make a title unavailable even when the app itself opens normally.
Recommended Free Tools
Why Amazon Music songs can be grayed out
- The title left the catalog: licensing changes can remove a track or album from the service. A gray entry can remain in a saved playlist even though the stream is no longer offered.
- Your Prime or Music subscription changed: an expired, canceled or altered plan can remove access to titles that were previously playable. Confirm the plan and account currently signed in to Amazon Music.
- The app has been offline too long: Amazon notes that the app may need to connect wirelessly at least once a month to validate offline music. Reconnect to the Internet, open Amazon Music and let it synchronize.
- A recent update requires downloads again: some titles may appear in your library but need to be downloaded again before offline playback is available.
- The local download is incomplete: remove the affected offline copy and download the track or album again while connected to a reliable network.
Refresh the library after reconnecting, then search for the title directly. If it is still gray and the plan is active, the catalog may no longer include that recording; no cache reset can restore a license that Amazon no longer offers.

HD and Ultra HD: connection and hardware requirements
Amazon’s HD and Ultra HD playback requires a strong connection and hardware capable of at least 16-bit/44.1 kHz. A device that cannot process that bit depth and sample rate may need an external digital-to-analog converter. Amazon says an external DAC can provide that capability.
A USB DAC supporting at least 16-bit/44.1 kHz is therefore a relevant accessory only when the playback device lacks the required audio hardware. Connect the DAC according to its manufacturer’s instructions, select it as the system output and retry the HD track. A DAC will not repair ordinary app loading, a blocked cellular permission, an expired subscription or a missing catalog title.
Platform decision guide
| Platform | Best first actions | Platform-specific limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Android | Allow mobile data, force-stop, update through Google Play, Refresh My Music, then clear cache. | Settings names vary by manufacturer; avoid erasing all app data unless you are ready to sign in again. |
| Fire tablet | Check network, force-stop, update through Amazon Appstore, Refresh My Music and clear cache. | Offline titles may need new downloads after an update or account resynchronization. |
| iPhone or iPad | Allow cellular data, close and reopen, update through the App Store and use Refresh My Music. | There is no full in-app cache-clear control; reinstall if refresh and updates do not resolve loading. |
| Windows or Mac | Quit and relaunch, update, sign out and in, then reload the library. | Amazon’s desktop troubleshooting can require removing the local Data folder; local downloads may need to be restored. |
When none of the seven fixes works
At this point, record the exact symptom, platform, app version, device-software version and whether the failure occurs on Wi‑Fi, cellular data or both. Note whether every song fails or only particular gray titles, and whether standard-quality playback works while HD does not. Those distinctions prevent an account or catalog problem from being mistaken for a network outage, and they give Amazon support the information needed to investigate the remaining case.
