These tools cover distinct tasks rather than making Calc a feature-for-feature replacement: if you depend on a complex Excel workbook, test a copy and compare its results before switching.
What Calc can do for common spreadsheet work
Calc’s documented tools map to different needs: pivot tables summarize and rearrange data; lookup formulas return related values; filters narrow a list; Goal Seek finds an input for a target result; and Solver works on optimization models. Choose by the job you need to do, not by assuming similarly named spreadsheet features behave identically across applications.

1. Summarize and rearrange data with pivot tables
Use a pivot table when you want to aggregate a dataset and inspect it from different angles—for example, reorganizing a sales list by region or category. Calc can create a pivot table from selected cells, a registered database table or query, or an external OLAP source. Its help describes pivot tables as a way to summarize large amounts of data and rearrange the view. LibreOffice Help: Pivot Table
When the source data changes, refresh the pivot table using Data → Pivot Table → Refresh. The refresh guidance also applies after importing an Excel pivot table; that documented workflow is not a guarantee that every Excel workbook feature will transfer intact. 2. Look up values with XLOOKUP
XLOOKUP searches an array and returns the corresponding cell or range. It supports exact and approximate matches, horizontal or vertical searches, an optional result for a not-found value, reverse search, and wildcard or regular-expression matching. The function is available in LibreOffice starting with version 24.8, according to LibreOffice Help: XLOOKUP Function.
Check the array and search settings
- The search array must be one-dimensional and located on a single sheet.
- If the result array is a range, the help documentation says to enter the formula as an array formula.
- Binary search modes require sorted data. Using them on unsorted data can produce invalid results.
There is also a portability consideration: XLOOKUP is not part of OpenDocument 1.3 Part 4 and uses the COM.MICROSOFT.XLOOKUP namespace. If a workbook containing this formula will move between spreadsheet applications or formats, verify the formula and its results in the destination application.

3. Filter a list to focus on matching rows
When you need to see only rows that meet a condition, Calc documents three filter tools: AutoFilter, Standard Filter, and Advanced Filter. AutoFilter adds one-row list boxes that let you choose which items to display. These tools address the practical job of narrowing a list; their availability alone does not mean every Excel filtering feature works identically in Calc. LibreOffice Help: Tools Bar
4. Find a target input with Goal Seek
Goal Seek is for a formula that depends on one changing input. Provide the formula cell, the value you want that formula to reach, and the variable cell Calc should adjust. For example, if a total is calculated from a price input, you can ask which price would make the total reach a specified amount.

- Open Tools → Goal Seek.
- Specify the formula cell whose result should reach a target.
- Enter the desired target value.
- Choose the variable cell Calc should change, then run Goal Seek and review the result.
LibreOffice Help: Goal Seek documents these inputs. Goal Seek’s single-variable setup makes it different from Solver, which is intended for models with decision variables and constraints.
5. Optimize a model with Solver
Use Solver when the task is to optimize a model rather than simply find one input that reaches one target. You define the model’s decision variables and constraints, then configure a solver engine and settings. LibreOffice Help lists linear solvers, evolutionary algorithms, and an experimental swarm non-linear solver. The result depends on the model and the engine you configure; the experimental label matters if you are considering that option. LibreOffice Help: Solver Options

6. Check the workbook you rely on before switching
Calc’s documented pivot-table refresh after Excel pivot-table import is useful evidence for that specific workflow, not proof of complete Excel workbook compatibility. The feature descriptions above do not establish that every formula, macro, chart, or other workbook behavior will transfer correctly. For a workbook your work depends on, save a copy, open it in Calc, exercise the relevant features, and compare important outputs with the original before making Calc your replacement.
