Start by identifying where your Flutter app actually runs. If it runs on a companion Android phone and sends an experience to glasses, profile the phone-side Flutter UI in profile mode on that phone. If the app is expected to render immersive spatial content directly on an Android XR device, do not assume Flutter’s profiling tools or optimizations cover the XR renderer: Android’s documented XR development paths use runtime- and engine-specific tooling. For XR rendering, Android’s quality guidance sets frame-time goals of under 13.8 ms at 72 Hz or under 11.1 ms at 90 Hz, depending on the target mode.
First identify the glasses architecture
“Android XR smart glasses” can describe different device and app arrangements. Android XR includes wired XR glasses and audio/display glasses, and some audio/display experiences are projected from a host phone. That distinction determines where Flutter runs and which frames and performance signals matter. Android’s device overview describes the categories; confirm the actual target device and runtime before choosing a profiling plan: Understand the types of Android XR devices.

- Flutter UI on a companion phone: profile the Flutter app on the host Android device. If it sends content to glasses, reproduce that projection or interaction path during profiling; phone UI timing alone may not capture the whole experience.
- Immersive or spatial rendering on an XR device: establish which XR runtime and engine render the scene, then use that path’s profiling tools and performance features. Android documents Jetpack XR, Unity, OpenXR, and WebXR development paths; its reviewed documentation does not establish Flutter as a native XR rendering engine. Jetpack XR SDK documentation says its libraries are in Developer Preview and APIs remain under development.
Flutter can still be appropriate for a phone-side interface or another part of a product, but that is different from claiming Flutter renders the XR scene. Treat each part as its own performance target.

Profile Flutter on the real target device
Use a profile-mode build, not a debug build, for performance decisions. Flutter notes that debug frame times are not indicative of release performance; profile mode retains profiling support while behaving much more like release mode. Profile on physical target hardware, because emulator and simulator performance can differ from the device. See Flutter’s performance profiling guidance.

- Build and run in profile mode on the Android phone that will host the Flutter UI, or on the specific supported target where that Flutter app runs.
- Reproduce a representative sequence: include startup, screen transitions, repeated updates, external input, and—where applicable—the phone-to-glasses projection path.
- Open Flutter DevTools’ Performance view and record the sequence. Inspect the frame chart, timeline events, and work on the UI and raster threads. Flutter explains the view and its timing data in Use the Performance view.
- Investigate the expensive frames. Determine whether the trace points to UI-thread work, raster-thread work, or another event before changing code. If profiling a Flutter web build, Flutter directs developers to use Chrome DevTools.
- Change one material cause at a time and record again. Compare the same interaction before and after, so an apparent improvement is tied to the change rather than a different workload.
A red or janky frame is a signal to inspect the trace, not a diagnosis by itself. Flutter’s general DevTools guide uses approximately 16 ms for a 60 FPS frame as a reference; that is useful for ordinary Flutter UI analysis, but it is not the Android XR frame budget.
Fix Flutter jank based on the trace
Flutter identifies rebuilding more UI than necessary and constructing large lists directly as common performance pitfalls. Use the recorded UI and raster work to decide whether either applies to the slow interaction. Flutter’s rendering performance guidance also advises investigating expensive rendering work rather than treating visual effects as automatically problematic.

- [Comfort Reminder]:For your comfort and the best viewing experience, we suggest giving your eyes (and yourself) a 10-minute break after every 30 minutes of use.
- If UI-thread work is high: inspect which widgets rebuild during the slow frame and whether the app is rebuilding more of the interface than the interaction requires. For long, changing collections, review whether the list is being built in a way that constructs too much content at once.
- If raster work is high: investigate effects such as opacity, clipping, shadows, or shader compilation only when the timeline suggests they contribute. Avoid removing visual features based solely on a hunch.
- If the Flutter trace looks healthy but the experience still stutters: check the rest of the actual architecture, including projection or the XR runtime’s rendering path. A Flutter UI trace does not by itself establish that native XR rendering is meeting its frame budget.
After each change, profile the same sequence again. Keep the change only if the relevant frame or thread work improves without creating a new problem elsewhere.

Use the frame budget for the correct runtime
| Target and context | Frame-time reference | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| General Flutter UI; Flutter DevTools guidance | Approximately 16 ms per frame at 60 FPS. Flutter Performance view. | Use as a general Flutter diagnostic reference, not as a universal Android XR target. |
| Android XR app quality guidance | Under 13.8 ms at 72 Hz or under 11.1 ms at 90 Hz. Android XR app quality guidelines. | Match the threshold to the device and runtime refresh mode being targeted. |
| Android XR Unity GPU frame-budget guidance | At least 72 FPS as a minimum target and 90 FPS as ideal, with an 11 ms frame budget in that Unity guide. Plan a GPU frame budget. | Unity-specific context; do not treat its engine controls as Flutter settings. |
The 72 Hz and 90 Hz thresholds are not interchangeable targets for every pair of glasses. Confirm the device’s supported mode and the applicable runtime guidance, then measure the renderer that produces those frames.

Keep XR rendering optimizations engine-specific
Android’s OpenXR materials describe features such as eye-tracked foveation, space warp, frame synthesis, and runtime performance metrics. Android’s Unity guidance separately discusses application spacewarp, Vulkan subsampling, and late latching. These are XR runtime or engine-path considerations—not generic switches to enable in a Flutter app. See Develop with OpenXR and the Unity GPU frame-budget guide for their respective scopes.
For a spatial 3D environment, Android’s environment guidance recommends optimizing mesh polycount and geometry, reducing draw calls with simpler models or texture atlases, compressing textures, and baking lighting where appropriate. That guide gives approximate recommendations of 80 MB for a 3D wallpaper/GLB and 15 MB for audio. These are recommendations in the spatial-environments context, not universal storage or hardware limits: Spatial environments.

Include startup and stability in the performance review
Frame pacing is only part of app quality. Android’s XR app quality guidance also covers startup expectations and stability criteria. Review those criteria alongside the frame-time targets for the XR app and device in scope rather than judging quality only by whether a scene appears smooth: Android XR app quality guidelines.
