For premium over-ear wireless headphones with active noise cancellation (ANC), there is no universally agreed winner: different reviewers prioritize noise blocking, comfort, sound, calls, and battery life differently. What Hi-Fi? names the Sony WH-1000XM6 its best overall pick, while SoundGuys highlights the Apple AirPods Max 2 for noise cancellation and the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) for comfort. The shortlist below is based on those publications’ recommendations, not a shared test or a new hands-on review. These are headphones, not boom-microphone gaming headsets.

Travel and commuting
Aircraft and road rumble are low-frequency sounds; voices and irregular office noise pose different challenges. SoundGuys frames the Sony as a balanced travel choice, the AirPods Max 2 as its strongest noise-blocking option, and the Bose as its comfort pick for long flights. Those are distinct priorities, not proof that one model suppresses every kind of noise best.
#1 Best Overall
- Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling: 2 internal and 2 external mics work in tandem to detect external noise and effectively reduce up to 90% of it, no matter in trains or offices.
- Immerse Yourself in Detailed Audio: The noise cancelling headphones have oversized 40mm dynamic drivers that produce detailed sound and thumping beats with BassUp technology for your every travel, commuting and gaming. Compatible with Hi-Res certified audio via the AUX cable for more detail.
- 40-Hour Long Battery Life and Fast Charging: With 40 hours of battery life with ANC on and 60 hours in normal mode, you can commute in peace with your Bluetooth headphones without thinking about recharging. Fast charge for 5 mins to get an extra 4 hours of music listening for daily users.
- Dual-Connections: Connect to two devices simultaneously with Bluetooth 5.0 and instantly switch between them. Whether you're working on your laptop, or need to take a phone call, audio from your Bluetooth headphones will automatically play from the device you need to hear from.
- App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.
Comfort for long sessions
SoundGuys’ Bose comfort recommendation is a useful starting point, not a fit guarantee. Headband pressure, clamp, earcup space, heat, and glasses can change how headphones feel from person to person. If possible, try them on or check the return terms before committing to a long-flight pair.
Calls in noisy places
ANC quiets sound for the wearer; microphone pickup and background-noise suppression determine what the other person hears. SoundGuys highlights the JBL Tour One M3 for calls and also notes strong call performance from the Sony WH-1000XM6. TechRadar says a microphone positioned close to the mouth can be preferable when call clarity is critical. If calls are your main use, evaluate microphone performance separately from ANC.
Rank #2
- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
Sound and everyday features
Sound preference is personal: some listeners prioritize detail or a more neutral presentation, while others prefer stronger bass or adjustable sound. App controls, ambient or transparency modes, multipoint, folding, and case design can also matter in daily use. What Hi-Fi? lists multipoint for the Sony and Bose models in its current table; check the exact generation and regional specifications of any model before buying.
How to read the battery-life figures
Published ratings are not directly comparable unless the models and test conditions match. What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 table lists 30 hours for both the Sony WH-1000XM6 and Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen). SoundGuys describes the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless as rated for more than 50 hours and notes its battery is replaceable with a screwdriver. These are source-reported figures; they do not establish equivalent listening conditions or a unified laboratory comparison.
Rank #3
- INCREDIBLE SOUND: Custom acoustic platform delivers rich, balanced audio for music, calls and everyday listening.
- LOSSLESS AUDIO SUPPORT: USB-C lossless audio and sound profiles optimize music quality across devices and environments. Additional option to use the 3.5 mm cable for a standard analog experience.
- ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLING (ANC): block distractions at work, on flights or during your daily commute. Or use Transparency mode to let the sounds of your environment mix in with your music.
- SEAMLESS WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY: One-touch pairing with Apple & Android for easy switching across devices.
- SPATIAL AUDIO IMMERSION: Personalized dynamic head tracking, 360-degree sound for movies, music and immersive everyday listening.
Do not confuse the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless with the distinct Sennheiser HDB 630: What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 table lists 60 hours for the HDB 630, not the MOMENTUM 5. Battery runtime in actual use can depend on settings and listening conditions, so confirm the current manufacturer specifications for the exact model and region.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the review rankings can—and cannot—tell you
The publications use different methods and priorities. What Hi-Fi? says it compares new arrivals’ sound with leading competing models it keeps on site and evaluates comfort, build, and features. SoundGuys labels its guide lab-tested and records an update dated September 17, 2026. TechRadar describes hours of testing and direct comparative listening among Bose and Sony models. Their distinct processes do not produce a shared score.
What Hi-Fi? calls the Sony WH-1000XM6 its best overall choice; that is the publication’s selection. SoundGuys’ guide instead emphasizes category-specific picks, saying the AirPods Max 2 blocks the most noise, the Bose is most comfortable for long flights, and the Sony balances both. A buyer should match the reviewer’s category to their own priority rather than treating either label as a definitive result for every listener.

Check before buying
- Confirm the exact generation and full model name, especially for the Bose QuietComfort Ultra and Apple AirPods Max families.
- Verify current local pricing, availability, and manufacturer specifications; the review pages can change and do not establish live prices or inventory.
- Choose for your most important use—noise blocking, comfort, calls, battery, or features—and assess microphone quality separately if calls matter.
- Consider fit and serviceability: comfort differs by wearer, while a replaceable battery may support longer ownership.
