Use Xbox Cloud Gaming to stream eligible games without owning a console, Xbox Remote Play to stream from your own Xbox, or the Xbox PC app to install and run a compatible Windows game locally. These options have different game libraries, access requirements, and hardware needs.
Which way of playing Xbox games fits your laptop?
| Method | Need an Xbox console? | Where the game runs | What determines availability | Laptop hardware demand |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | No | On Microsoft’s cloud servers; streamed to your laptop | Supported title, region, device, and eligible access plan | Does not depend on the laptop meeting the game’s local graphics requirements |
| Xbox Remote Play | Yes, an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S with the game installed | On your console; streamed to your laptop | Game installed on the console and a working remote connection | Used to display and control the stream |
| Xbox PC app | No | On the laptop itself | A Windows PC version of the game and the relevant purchase or subscription access | The laptop must meet that game’s system requirements |
A console game is not automatically a Windows PC game. Likewise, a PC Game Pass subscription does not by itself provide Xbox Cloud Gaming access.

Play without a console using Xbox Cloud Gaming
Cloud Gaming streams supported games over the internet, so you do not need to own an Xbox console or install the game on your laptop. Xbox lists Windows PCs as supported devices. You can play in a supported browser, including Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or Safari, or use Xbox on PC to discover, download, and stream games. Check the Xbox Cloud Gaming page for current device, title, plan, and regional eligibility.
Check access before choosing a game
Paid cloud-game access depends on an eligible Game Pass plan, and the available plan benefits and catalog can change. Xbox says Cloud Gaming is not included with PC Game Pass. Select free-to-play titles, including Fortnite, can be played with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. Confirm that the specific title and access route are currently available where you live before subscribing or purchasing.

Check the connection and input
Xbox lists 10 Mbps download speed as the minimum for Cloud Gaming; some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality. Xbox recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi. These are published requirements and guidance, not a guarantee of smooth play: performance can also depend on location, device, and connection quality. A compatible USB or Bluetooth controller is the usual input, though select games support touch controls.
Use Xbox Remote Play if you own a console
Remote Play sends a game installed on your Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S to a compatible device, including a Windows PC. The game runs on your console, so the console must be available and configured for remote features; this is not a way to play without one. See Xbox’s Remote Play requirements for current details.

Xbox specifies Windows 10 or 11 version 22H2 or later, an Xbox profile and Microsoft account, and a 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection with at least 10 Mbps download speed. A compatible controller is an option for playing. Remote Play’s usefulness depends on the connection between your laptop and console as well as your network conditions.

Run a Windows version locally with the Xbox PC app
If you want the game to run on the laptop rather than stream, the title needs a Windows PC version. Install or access it through the Xbox PC app, then check the game’s own system requirements against your laptop’s processor, graphics, memory, storage, and Windows version. Xbox does not set one universal laptop specification for every game.

The Xbox PC app requirements list Windows 10 or 11 version 22H2 or higher, 150 MB of storage, and a 720p display for the app. Those are requirements for the app itself, not a promise that any particular game will run well. Some games may require a recent Windows update, and using the app may require leaving Windows S mode. Xbox notes that system requirements vary by game.
If you use a Game Pass catalog title, access lasts only while your subscription is active and the game remains in the catalog. Catalog titles and availability can vary by time, region, plan, and platform.

Choose and set up the right method
- Decide where you want the game to run. Choose Cloud Gaming for eligible streamed titles without a console, Remote Play to stream from your own console, or the Xbox PC app for a compatible Windows game running locally.
- Check the title and your access. Confirm whether the game is available through the selected method, whether your region is supported, and whether you need a purchase or an eligible subscription plan.
- Check Windows and device support. Xbox lists Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or later for the PC app and Remote Play. For a locally installed game, check the title’s own requirements; the app requirements alone do not establish that the game will run.
- Prepare input and internet for streaming. Use a compatible controller where required; some Cloud Gaming titles offer touch controls. For Cloud Gaming or Remote Play, follow Xbox’s published speed guidance and prefer 5 GHz Wi-Fi where available. A new router is not automatically required.
- Install only when playing locally. For a Windows PC game, compare your laptop’s components and available storage with the game’s requirements before downloading. Streaming instead avoids the game’s local hardware demands but relies on a suitable connection.
What to check when play is unavailable or performs poorly
- The game does not appear: It may not have a Windows PC version, may not be in the current cloud or subscription catalog, or may not be offered in your region. Check the title listing for the method you intend to use.
- Cloud Gaming asks for different access: Check the current plan’s benefits and whether the title supports cloud play. PC Game Pass alone does not include Cloud Gaming.
- The Xbox PC app will not install or run: Check Windows version and the app requirements. Windows S mode or a required Windows update can also affect use.
- A locally installed game struggles: Compare the laptop with that game’s requirements. The Xbox PC app’s minimum requirements do not describe the hardware needed for every game.
- A stream is unstable: Check download speed and Wi-Fi quality, and remember that Xbox says performance is affected by internet connection, user location, device, and other factors. Meeting a published minimum does not guarantee a particular stream quality.
