5 Weird Things You Can Do With a Spare Webcam (Besides Video Calls)

A spare webcam can monitor motion, show close-up work, or add a camera angle. Here are five reuse ideas and what to check before trying them.

A spare USB webcam can do more than put your face on screen: it can watch for motion, show a close-up of a project, or add another angle to a demonstration. Most ideas need a computer or other compatible host and suitable software, so check what your particular camera and setup support before getting started.

What to check before reusing a webcam

  • Host and software: A USB webcam usually needs a connected computer or compatible host plus an app that supports the task. It is not automatically a standalone network camera. An older Adafruit motion-detection project illustrates the host-based approach, but its page warns that the guide’s service access no longer works.
  • Image and placement: Resolution, frame rate, focus distance, lighting, lens distortion, mounting, and application support can all affect results. A camera that looks fine in a video call may not focus closely enough on a page or small object.
  • Mounting: Do not assume every webcam fits a tripod. Creative specifies a 1/4-inch-20 plate and universal tripod compatibility for its Live! Cam Sync 1080p V2; check your own model before buying or attaching a mount.

1. Make a basic motion-triggered monitor

Connect the webcam to a computer or other compatible host, then use capture software that can detect movement and save images when something changes in view. This can suit a hobby bench, a 3D-printing area, or a pet’s usual spot while you are nearby.

The camera alone does not provide the whole monitoring system: the host must stay available, and the software must support your camera and operating system. The Adafruit project is useful as a concept example, not as a current one-click setup guide, because its page says the service access it relied on no longer works.

Think through privacy before leaving a camera running. Aim it only where appropriate, secure the host with updates and strong credentials, and check whether the software or host enables remote access. These precautions align with recommendations in eufy’s vendor guide to webcam security; they are practical safeguards, not a guarantee of security.

2. Turn it into a document or object camera

Point the webcam down at a recipe, a page of notes, a craft, or a small object, then capture or share the view with suitable software. It can be a quick way to show someone what you are working on without holding the item up to a laptop camera.

Do a test frame first. The image may be too soft if the lens cannot focus at that distance, while uneven light, glare, or distortion can make text hard to read. A manufacturer describes close focusing and an object-facing view for a specific dual-camera webcam, and a secondary overview includes document scanning among webcam reuse ideas; neither establishes scan quality for a generic camera. See Creative’s product page and BGR’s overview.

Creative describes a face-plus-object setup for tutorials and demonstrations on its Project Watcher product page. That is evidence for the use case, not a promise that every computer or streaming app can combine two arbitrary USB webcams. Check that your intended application can select and display both feeds before arranging your workspace.

4. Experiment with facial capture or tracking

A webcam can be used as an input for facial capture in some VTubing or game setups. This is best treated as an experiment rather than a guaranteed upgrade: tracking depends on lighting, camera position, frame rate, resolution, application support, and the operating system.

A secondary article lists facial capture for VTubing or games as a possible old-webcam use, but there is no established compatibility list for arbitrary webcam models. Check the requirements for the specific tracking app and test your camera before building a setup around it. See BGR’s overview.

5. Try an infrared-camera experiment

For a more hands-on project, the European Space Agency’s Climate Detectives activity describes modifying a webcam by removing its infrared filter. This is a physical change to the camera, not a software setting, and the procedure may not suit every model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Opening or modifying a camera can damage it, so treat this as a project for a device you can afford to lose and follow the activity’s instructions rather than improvising. See the ESA Climate Detectives webcam infrared-camera activity.

Which idea is right for your spare camera?

Idea Setup and extra requirements Main limitation or risk
Motion-triggered monitor Host computer or compatible device, capture software, and a stable camera position Requires compatible software and raises privacy and host-security considerations
Document or object camera Host and capture or sharing software; a steady overhead position helps Focus distance, light, resolution, and lens distortion determine whether details are usable
Second stream angle Host and an application that can use the desired camera feeds Support for two arbitrary USB webcams is not universal
Facial capture or tracking Host and a tracking application that supports the camera and operating system Performance varies with lighting, placement, frame rate, resolution, and app support
Infrared experiment Camera modification following a model-appropriate procedure Physical modification can damage the camera
