The Shokz OpenFit Air 2 is a good fit for listeners who want lightweight, hook-secured earbuds that leave their ears unblocked—not for anyone who needs noise cancellation or strong isolation. Tom’s Guide’s reviewer found them secure and convenient during workouts, but said train noise could drown out the audio. Shokz lists a US price of $129.95; check current pricing and availability before buying.
What are the Shokz OpenFit Air 2?
They are Bluetooth open-ear earbuds designed for fitness and everyday listening. A flexible hook wraps around each ear, while the speaker sits near the ear canal instead of sealing it. That leaves the ear open to nearby sounds, but also means these earbuds do not isolate you from your surroundings like conventional in-ear models.

Shokz lists each earbud at 7.2 g, with a 30-degree angled speaker and a 0.75 mm Ni-Ti alloy hook. The company says its DirectPitch technology reduces sound leakage; that is a manufacturer claim, not a guarantee that people nearby cannot hear your audio. Fit and listening volume can affect leakage.
How do they perform for workouts and daily listening?
Fit and controls
In Tom’s Guide’s review, published October 1, 2026, the reviewer said the OpenFit Air 2 felt lightweight and secure during workouts, with a flexible fit. The reviewer also found its pressure-sensitive buttons easier to use than the original OpenFit Air’s touch controls, including with sweaty fingers or gloves. Those are the reviewer’s hands-on impressions, not a universal fit guarantee.
#1 Best Overall
- Even lighter. All-day comfort - Just 7.2g. That's it. OpenFit Air 2 is 17.2% lighter than the previous generation. Made with soft, skin-friendly materials, it feels gentle on the ears even during extended wear. The open-ear design minimizes ear canal pressure and heat buildup, delivering a light, breathable fit. From HIIT sessions to dog walks to back-to-back calls, they stay secure and comfortable, so you stay focused.
- Firm frame. Flexible fit - Built from 0.75mm Ni-Ti alloy, the frame holds firm and lasts. The ultra-narrow pod sits naturally over the ear, while the ergonomic ear-hook adapts to the shape of your ear — easing pressure points and keeping everything secure, even during intense workouts.
- Pocket-sized. Effortless style - 10.5% smaller, 17.6% lighter, and sleeker than the previous generation. Easy to carry, easy to style. The charging case slips into any pocket — jeans, blazer, bag — without adding bulk.
- Hear your world. And your music - Shokz's signature open-ear design helps you stay aware of your surroundings — whether you're camping, jogging, or hiking. Plus, DirectPitch Technology keeps your audio and calls private, while minimising sound leakage so those around you stay undisturbed.
- Bold, booming sound - Shokz's patented Bassphere driver packs powerful sound into a compact unit. The dual-driver system, with output equivalent to a custom 16 mm driver, delivers rich, impactful bass and a full, expansive soundstage. Choose from 4 preset EQs or build your own with 2 custom modes — tuned exactly how you like it.
Sound and awareness
The open design keeps your ears unblocked, which can help you remain aware of nearby activity. It comes at a cost: the earbuds provide neither active noise cancellation nor the isolation and bass typically associated with sealed in-ear designs. Tom’s Guide’s reviewer found the sound good for the price, but below the clarity and power of Shokz’s OpenFit 2+ and OpenFit Pro. The reviewer could hear the audio by busy roads, but said it could be drowned out on trains.
Shokz describes the audio system as combining Bassphere and OpenBass 2.0. Its app offers four preset EQ modes and two custom modes, according to the product page. Tom’s Guide also notes that EQ can be adjusted in the app.

Calls and device switching
Shokz lists dual microphones with AI noise reduction for calls, Bluetooth 6.1, and multipoint pairing for two devices. To connect a second device, Shokz’s instructions say to enable MultiPoint Pairing in the Shokz app and connect the second device there. Multipoint is a pairing feature; the available product information does not establish that audio from two devices mixes simultaneously.

Shokz rates the earbuds for up to 8 hours of listening per charge and up to 36 hours with the charging case. A 10-minute quick charge is rated for up to 3 hours of listening. These are manufacturer maximums, not guaranteed results for every listener or usage pattern. Tom’s Guide’s reviewer said the 8-hour and 36-hour figures matched their use during a three-week review.

On Shokz’s US listing, the earbuds are rated IP55 and the case IP54. These are separate component ratings; neither means the product is suitable for immersion in water.
The package includes two earbuds, a charging case, a user guide, legal information and a warranty card. Shokz says a USB Type-C charging cable is not included. Its FAQ discusses replacing a single earbud, but current replacement prices and regional availability are not established here.

Should you buy the Shokz OpenFit Air 2?
Choose them if a secure earhook, open ears and workout-friendly physical controls matter more to you than blocking outside noise. The manufacturer’s battery ratings and separate IP55 earbud/IP54 case ratings are useful on paper, while Tom’s Guide’s reviewer reported a secure workout fit and easy-to-use buttons.
Skip them if you regularly listen on trains or want noise cancellation, strong isolation, or the fuller bass that closed in-ear earbuds can provide. Tom’s Guide’s reviewer found this model less capable in sound quality than Shokz’s OpenFit 2+ and OpenFit Pro, so those are worth considering if sound performance is your priority and their price fits your budget.
