Five routes exist: licensed commercial prints on MakerWorld, selling original printed goods on Etsy, selling a digital design or having a partner produce it, MakerWorld creator rewards, and avoided purchases. This article explains how each route works, what the platforms currently say, and how to test a payback claim before you trust it. The routes are not a verified account of any one owner’s earnings, so treat any personal figure as something you must document yourself.
Five routes a Bambu Lab owner can use
1. Selling physical prints of licensed models
Bambu Lab’s MakerWorld platform introduced Commercial License Memberships in February 2025 to simplify licensing for people who sell physical prints. In its announcement, Bambu Lab stated: “Commercial licensing is essential for both creators and users who sell physical prints of 3D models available on MakerWorld.” The program lets a creator offer a commercial license while keeping the model available for personal use.

The key point is that a membership is not blanket permission. Check the license terms on each model before you sell prints of it. Many models will be personal-use only, and a license on one design does not cover another.

Etsy’s seller help guidance says that physical items may qualify when they are made by hand or “produced using computerized tools like a 3D printer, CNC or Cricut machine.” Your listing must still follow Etsy’s originality and intellectual-property rules, and you remain responsible for using your own listing photos. Printing a product is allowed under those rules; copying someone else’s design or using their photos is not.

3. Selling a digital design or using a production partner
Etsy’s guidance also covers two related routes. A seller can offer an original design as a digital download, or use a third party to print that design onto a physical item. If you use a production partner, you must disclose it where the platform requires.
Etsy’s partner guidance limits production assistance to items the seller designed or sourced and the buyer customized. Ready-made goods bought for resale do not qualify. A printer that makes your own designs fits this route; reselling someone else’s finished product through a partner does not.

4. MakerWorld creator rewards
Bambu Lab’s October 11, 2024 announcement described an Exclusive Model Program in which creators earn Exclusive Points that can be converted to cash rewards. The announcement valued each point at $0.066, required accounts to have 100 total prints before submitting models, and allowed a cash withdrawal for every $100 worth of Exclusive Points earned. Bambu Lab described the program as a pilot.

Those terms are historical. Confirm the current eligibility, point value and withdrawal rules on MakerWorld before you plan around them.

5. Avoided purchases
The fifth route is not income at all. If you print parts, fixtures, replacements or household objects that you would otherwise have bought, the saving is real money, but it is an avoided expense rather than revenue. It only counts if you can name the item, find a comparable price for it, and show that you would have purchased it. Printing a cheaper object you did not need does not offset the printer’s cost.
What the platform terms say
The table below lists the figures Bambu Lab attached to its MakerWorld programs. These are dated announcements, not current terms, and they describe the platform’s rules rather than what any creator earns.

How to test a payback claim
A printer has paid for itself only when the documented net money and avoided costs, over a fixed period, exceed what you spent on the printer. Use this sequence:
- Set the period and the cost base. Pick a start date and end date, such as twelve months. Record the printer’s purchase price, and any accessories you count as part of the investment.
- List gross revenue by source. Keep subscription payouts, Etsy sales, digital download sales and reward cash on separate lines, using dated payment records.
- Subtract attributable costs. Include filament, failed prints, packaging, shipping you paid, marketplace fees, payment-processor fees, platform fees and any licensing cost. Shipping you recovered from buyers should be netted out rather than counted twice.
- Add avoided purchases on their own line. For each item, record the comparable purchase price, the print cost, and the evidence you would have bought it.
- Compare the total with the printer cost. Net revenue plus net avoided expense, minus the printer cost, gives your position at the end of the period.
A worked example with hypothetical numbers
Suppose a printer cost $600 and a seller records $400 in gross Etsy sales during the year. Fees and shipping come to $90, and filament plus failed prints total $70. Net revenue is $240. That is $360 short of the printer cost, so the claim has not yet paid for itself, even though the seller made $400 in sales. The same seller would need to add avoided purchases documented at a net saving of at least $360 to reach break-even on the printer alone.

Common errors that inflate a payback claim
- Treating gross sales as profit.
- Counting an avoided purchase for something you would not have bought.
- Leaving out failed prints, packaging, or payment and platform fees.
- Assuming one license covers every model you print.
- Using program terms from 2024 or 2025 without checking them today.
- Ignoring the time spent designing, printing, finishing, listing and shipping, which matters if you want to compare an hour of work with a wage.
Check before you sell
- Read the license on each MakerWorld model before printing it for sale.
- Use your own design or a properly licensed one for Etsy listings, and your own photos.
- Disclose any production partner where Etsy requires it, and use partners only for items you designed or sourced and the buyer customized.
- Confirm current MakerWorld membership and reward terms on the platform before you apply.
