32-Inch 4K Monitor Shadow or Dead Pixels? How to Tell the Difference and What to Do

A small dot that stays in one place is most likely a dead or stuck subpixel. A larger shadow, cloudy area, or uneven patch is more likely a uniformity problem, which may come from the backlight or the panel itself. Neither can be repaired, and whether you get a replacement depends on the written policy for your exact model and country, not on whether the defect is visible.

Two different problems that look alike

Most people use “dead pixel” for any spot on the screen. The two symptoms are different, and they are handled differently by manufacturers.

A pinpoint dot: a bright or dark subpixel

Each LCD pixel is made of red, green, and blue subpixels. Acer’s support page distinguishes two kinds of defect. A bright subpixel shows as a small white dot on a black pattern. A dark subpixel shows as a small black dot on a white pattern. Acer’s page states: “Pixel defects or failures cannot be fixed or repaired and can happen at any stage in the LCD’s life.”

A shadow or cloudy patch: uniformity (Mura)

A broad dark area, a cloud, or a region that looks slightly different from the rest of the screen is a uniformity issue. Philips’s display manual calls this “Mura,” a Japanese term meaning “unevenness.” The manual lists possible causes: non-uniform backlight luminance, stress from panel assembly, impurities, and flaws within the LCD cells. Those are possible causes only. Nothing in the manual confirms which one applies to a particular monitor, and you cannot confirm it from a photo alone.

Check which one you have

Run these checks in a dim room, with the monitor at the brightness you normally use:

  1. Display full-screen solid colors: pure white, pure black, 50% gray, then pure red, pure green, and pure blue.
  2. Decide whether the mark is a point or an area. A point keeps the same small size on every background. A broad region is a uniformity symptom.
  3. Note which background makes the mark easiest to see. A dark subpixel is most visible on white or light gray. A bright subpixel is most visible on black.
  4. Change the image or open a different window. If the mark stays in the same physical spot, it is a pixel-level defect.
  5. Take photos from your normal seating distance, from the same position, on white and on black. Close-up or heavily zoomed photos exaggerate small marks.
  6. Record the model number, serial number, purchase date, and the monitor’s current settings.

Use these results to narrow the problem:

  • One fixed point visible on every color: most likely a stuck or dead subpixel. Go to the warranty steps below.
  • Point visible only on white or light gray: most likely a dark subpixel.
  • Point visible only on black: most likely a bright subpixel.
  • Broad shadow or cloud in one area, most visible on dark or gray fields: a uniformity issue. Check the warranty terms before assuming coverage, because Philips states that Mura is not repairable and is not covered by the warranty terms in its own manual.

This is only triage. Without seeing the monitor, no one can confirm the cause from a description.

What manufacturer policies allow

There is no industry-wide allowance for dead pixels. Each manufacturer sets its own, and the numbers below are examples from specific policies, not a standard.

Source Product type Bright subpixels allowed Dark subpixels allowed Total subpixels allowed Scope notes
Acer India policy table UHD 3840×2160 Up to 2 Up to 5 Up to 5 India policy. Warranty duration and specifications can vary by region.

Philips display manual Uniformity (Mura) Not applicable Not applicable Not applicable States Mura is not repairable and not covered by the warranty terms in that manual.

Because these allowances count subpixels, not whole pixels, one defective pixel can use up more of the allowance than it appears to. A fully black pixel is made of three dark subpixels, so under a subpixel count it takes three of the five dark allowance.

What to do next

  1. Check your return window first. If it is still open, contact the seller now, because the return period may close before a warranty claim is decided.
  2. Assemble your evidence: photos on white, black, and gray; model number; serial number; purchase date; and proof of purchase.
  3. Find the manufacturer’s policy for your country on its official support site. Warranty length and defect thresholds vary by region.
  4. Submit a support claim with the evidence. Ask which threshold applies and how the defect was assessed.
  5. If the answer is unclear or refused, request the decision in writing and the policy clause it relies on.
