They are designed to improve access, but can also help when you are carrying something, walking in an unfamiliar area, or trying not to look at your screen. Availability and labels vary by device, app version, language, and country; these features are aids, not guarantees of safe or suitable access.
1. Filter transit routes for wheelchair accessibility
When planning a public-transit trip, Maps can filter for routes marked wheelchair accessible. In the app, enter your destination, choose Transit, open Options, and turn on Wheelchair accessible under Routes. Then review the routes Maps offers.

The filter can narrow your choices, but it does not guarantee that every station, vehicle, elevator, or part of the journey will be accessible when you travel. Check the route details and local transit operator information, especially if a transfer or station elevator is essential. Google documents the feature in its Android and iPhone and iPad accessibility instructions.
2. Check accessibility details for places
A place listing may include reported information about its entrance, restroom, seating, parking, and elevators. To use it, open a place in Maps and inspect its accessibility attributes. You can also emphasize accessibility information in Maps settings and suggest corrections if a listing is inaccurate.

- Tactile Keypad/Buttons
- Voice Control/Narration
- Loud Speaker
- Fully Accessible
- Assistive Tools/Vision Aids
Treat these details as useful signals rather than a promise that a venue will meet a particular visitor’s needs. Google says wheelchair-accessible place information is available only in certain countries, and its current help pages do not give a complete country list. The attributes may not cover every relevant detail or individual access requirement. See Google’s iPhone and iPad or Android instructions for finding wheelchair-accessible places.
3. Turn on detailed voice guidance for walking
Detailed voice guidance adds spoken cues during walking navigation, including how far away the next turn is. It can be useful if you prefer audio directions or need to keep your attention off the screen while moving.

4. Explore nearby places with Lens and a screen reader
Lens in Maps can use the phone camera to help explore nearby buildings, shops, and signs. With TalkBack on Android or VoiceOver on iPhone, you can browse nearby places and open their details through screen-reader interaction. This can offer another way to explore an unfamiliar area without relying only on the map view.

Google’s guidance covers Android and iOS phones, but says Lens in Maps does not support tablet-size devices. Camera-based discovery should not be treated as a way to recognize every sign or as a replacement for orientation tools you already rely on. See Google’s Android and iPhone and iPad accessibility guides.
5. Choose screen-reader, keyboard, or display controls
Maps supports different ways to interact depending on your device. Use the approach that suits your setup; the available controls and steps are platform-specific.

Google lists Chrome with ChromeVox on Chromebooks, Firefox with NVDA or JAWS on Windows, and Safari with VoiceOver on Mac. In Maps, you can tab to the map, move with the arrow keys, zoom with plus and minus, and use numbered place results. The steps are in Google Maps Help for computers.

Downloading a map area can be useful when you expect poor connectivity, as long as your route stays within the downloaded area. It is not a general offline substitute for every navigation mode: Google says offline transit, bicycling, and walking directions are unavailable. Offline driving also lacks traffic information and alternate routes, and map downloads are not available in some countries or regions. Check the Android or iPhone and iPad instructions before relying on an offline map.
