The Sony ULT Field 5 leans toward loud, party-oriented use, while the Bose SoundLink Max adds an auxiliary input and powerbank function. These are research-grounded candidates, not a hands-on or standardized ranking: specifications and listening assessments below are attributed to their sources.
How to choose an outdoor Bluetooth speaker
Start with where you will carry it and how exposed it may be. Weight and a strap matter on a walk or picnic; a heavier speaker may be acceptable for a patio or a short trip from the car. Check the model’s stated IP rating against your likely exposure, but do not treat a rating as a guarantee for every outdoor condition. The cited sources do not provide standardized exposure details for all five models.

Battery figures are manufacturer claims or editorially listed specifications, not a promise of listening time in your conditions. Volume, content, and settings can affect runtime; JBL explicitly notes that for the Charge 6. For sound, the judgments below belong to the named review publications, not to an independent listening test for this article.
Five portable outdoor speakers to consider
| Model | Carry and protection | Claimed battery life | Useful features and source notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| JBL Charge 6 | 0.99 kg with strap; protection rating not stated in the cited specification sheet. | Up to 24 hours, plus four Playtime Boost hours. | Bluetooth 5.4 and USB-C input/output. JBL says runtime varies with volume and audio content. Figures are from JBL’s 2025 specification sheet. |
| JBL Xtreme 5 | 2.9 kg; IP68, as listed by TechRadar. | TechRadar lists up to 28 hours; What Hi-Fi? lists 24 hours. The sources do not establish why the figures differ. | TechRadar lists an April 2026 release. What Hi-Fi? gives launch/reference prices of £330 / €350 / $400; these are volatile and market-specific, not guaranteed current prices. |
| Sony ULT Field 5 | 7.3 lb; IP67, according to Tom’s Guide. | 25 hours, according to Tom’s Guide. | Tom’s Guide describes it as rugged and loud, while noting some midrange loss and a restricted soundstage. |
| Bose SoundLink Max | 2.1 kg; IP67, according to What Hi-Fi? | Up to 20 hours, according to What Hi-Fi? | Bluetooth 5.3, built-in powerbank and 3.5 mm auxiliary input. |

Which model suits which outing?
For carrying farther: JBL Charge 6
At 0.99 kg with its strap, the Charge 6 is the lightest model here with a documented carry method. Its USB-C input/output and Bluetooth 5.4 are useful practical details, and JBL’s specification sheet claims up to 24 hours plus four Playtime Boost hours. JBL cautions that actual runtime varies with volume and audio content. The cited sheet does not state an IP rating, so verify the current regional product specification before choosing it for a setting where water or dust exposure matters. For a larger setup: JBL Xtreme 5
TechRadar lists the Xtreme 5 at 2.9 kg with IP68 protection and an April 2026 release, making it a larger option rather than an easy carry for everyone. Battery listings conflict: TechRadar says up to 28 hours, whereas What Hi-Fi? lists 24 hours. Because the cited sources do not explain the discrepancy, treat both as source-specific claims rather than choosing one as definitive. What Hi-Fi? reports launch/reference pricing of £330, €350 and $400; those figures are not a live quote and may not match current prices in your market. For loud, party-oriented use: Sony ULT Field 5
Tom’s Guide lists IP67 protection and 25 hours of battery life. It praises the speaker’s ruggedness and volume, but also notes some midrange loss and a restricted soundstage. At 7.3 lb, it is the heaviest option in this shortlist by the cited figures, so it is better suited to outings where you do not need to carry it far. Tom’s Guide waterproof-speaker guide.

What the ratings and runtime figures do—and do not—tell you
IP67 is reported for the Xtreme 4, ULT Field 5 and SoundLink Max; TechRadar reports IP68 for the Xtreme 5. These ratings help distinguish the listed models, but the sources used here do not supply enough standardized test detail to promise how any speaker will fare in every real-world exposure. Follow the manufacturer’s care and use guidance for the particular model.
Battery claims are also not directly comparable when source listings differ or when settings are unspecified. The Xtreme 5’s 24- and 28-hour listings are a clear example. Treat advertised figures as reference points, not guaranteed playback durations, and check the current manufacturer specification for your region before purchase.

Bottom line: match portability to the way you will use it
Choose by carry burden, protection needs and connections before comparing maximum battery claims. The Charge 6 is the lightest candidate with a stated weight and strap; the Xtreme 4 has a documented replaceable-battery path; and the Bose and Sony options distinguish themselves through their listed features and reviewer assessments. The Xtreme 5’s battery listing remains inconsistent across the cited coverage, so verify the current local specification rather than relying on one figure.
