The right choice depends on feed viscosity, fouling and crystallization risk, target solids, product heat sensitivity, available steam and electricity, and the condensate specification. Alfa Laval, GEA, ANDRITZ, CFT Food Machinery and Ing. A. Rossi Technology all offer credible energy-saving configurations, but their performance must be compared on the same duty rather than on headline claims.
For low- to medium-viscosity, heat-sensitive liquids, a vacuum falling-film train with multiple effects, thermal vapour recompression (TVR) or mechanical vapour recompression (MVR) is usually the starting point. Highly viscous, scaling or crystallizing feeds often require forced circulation, sometimes after a falling-film pre-concentration stage.

What makes an evaporator energy efficient?
An evaporator removes water by boiling a feed and separating the resulting vapour. Energy efficiency improves when the plant recycles that vapour instead of rejecting it after one pass. In a multiple-effect arrangement, vapour generated in one effect heats the next effect at a lower boiling temperature. Vacuum operation lowers boiling points, which protects heat-sensitive products and reduces the temperature difference required in each effect.
TVR (thermal vapour recompression) uses motive steam to compress part of the vapour and return it as heating steam. MVR (mechanical vapour recompression) uses a fan or compressor to raise low-pressure vapour to the pressure needed for heating. MVR therefore shifts much of the energy demand from purchased steam to electricity. The best package depends on local steam and power prices, utility reliability, cooling-water limits and the required operating hours.

Falling-film units distribute liquid over heated tubes or plates so it flows as a thin film. AIChE reported falling-film residence times of about 0.5–2 minutes in 2018, a useful characteristic for juices, dairy streams and plant proteins that lose quality during prolonged heating. Forced-circulation units pump liquor at high velocity through a heater and flash vessel; they are generally more tolerant of high viscosity, scaling and crystallization.
No common, independently verified energy figure covers all five suppliers. A vendor’s steam-consumption or electricity figure is meaningful only when the feed, solids, utilities, operating hours and condensate requirements are identical to those in competing bids.

Alfa Laval FilmVap
FilmVap is a falling-film evaporator for low- to medium-viscosity liquids that are sensitive to heat. Alfa Laval describes vacuum operation in each effect, allowing vapour from one effect to heat the next. The design is aimed at applications including spent wash, fruit juice and plant-based protein streams.

Alfa Laval states that these recompression options can cut steam usage to a fraction of the total evaporation capacity, reducing operating cost and environmental impact. Treat that statement as a manufacturer description, not as a directly comparable performance guarantee. The current FilmVap page lists capacity up to 50 tonnes per hour in a single unit; the actual achievable rate depends on feed composition, concentration and utilities.
GEA evaporation plants and meVap
GEA supplies integrated evaporation plants for removing water, increasing concentration or reducing volume. Its falling-film equipment is positioned for temperature-sensitive, low-solids liquids, while forced-circulation equipment is intended for highly viscous or fouling feeds. That distinction matters when a project moves from a free-flowing feed to a concentrated liquor: the first stage may suit falling film, but the final stage may need a different circulation pattern.

GEA says almost all new evaporation plants are equipped with MVR. Its meVap concept emphasizes lower energy consumption, reduced dependence on fossil fuels and reuse of process heat inside the plant. Ask GEA to state the compressor operating point, electrical load, turndown and backup-steam requirement in the proposal so the MVR claim can be evaluated against your site’s power constraints.
ANDRITZ MVR and Dedert falling-film systems
ANDRITZ’s MVR systems remove water from liquors or effluents while producing high-quality condensate. The company highlights low vapour velocity, low shear and a free-flow falling-film construction to limit foam. Condensate segregation and reuse can reduce fresh-water demand and protect product quality when different condensate fractions have different contamination risks.
For food processing, the Dedert falling-film range can be configured with TVR, compressors, fans or waste heat such as dryer vapour. ANDRITZ states that, compared with multiple-effect evaporators, MVR evaporators consume considerably less energy. That is a directional comparison rather than a universal number: a multiple-effect plant with abundant low-cost steam, or an MVR system operating with expensive electricity, can produce a different economic result.
Scaling control is a key design question. ANDRITZ documents wetted lamella surfaces and dilution washing as measures for scaling control. Require the supplier to specify cleaning intervals, the washing sequence, chemical compatibility and the production lost during cleaning at your actual solids and viscosity.
CFT Food Machinery: Apollo, Art3mis Longrun, Poseidon and Mixflow
CFT’s portfolio is organized around food-product behavior. Apollo is an MVR falling-film system. Art3mis Longrun is an MVR design for high-viscosity tomato and fruit products. Poseidon is a multiple-effect falling-film system with optional TVR, while Mixflow addresses medium-viscosity products.

CFT describes parallel or counter-current multiple effects, boosted by TVR or MVR, as its energy-saving strategy. The important procurement issue is not the model name but the point at which the product becomes too viscous for stable film distribution. Request viscosity curves at inlet and outlet solids, distributor details, allowable concentration limits and evidence from a feed comparable to yours.
Ing. A. Rossi Technology Loki
Rossi’s Loki concentrators use a falling film for clarified juices, cider, tea, milk and whey. A thin film and short residence time support gentle treatment and efficient heat transfer, which is valuable where colour, flavour, proteins or aromas are easily damaged.
Loki can be supplied as a multiple-effect, TVR or MVR configuration. Rossi also offers aroma recovery for volatile fractions. If aroma is a saleable or quality-critical component, compare the recovery yield, condensate handling and cleaning requirements as part of the evaporator project rather than treating them as optional afterthoughts.
Choosing falling film, forced circulation or a hybrid
| Feed condition | Preferred starting point | Reason | Questions to resolve |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low viscosity, heat-sensitive juice, dairy or plant protein | Vacuum falling film | Thin film, short residence time and low boiling temperature limit thermal exposure | Can the distributor maintain wetting during turndown? What is the residence time at the target solids? |
| Highly viscous product | Forced circulation or a falling-film/MVR design proven at that viscosity | Pumped circulation avoids loss of film stability as viscosity rises | What viscosity and solids were demonstrated, and what pump power is required? |
| Scaling or crystallizing liquor | Forced circulation, often with a suitable finishing stage | High velocity and controlled supersaturation reduce deposition risk | What is the cleaning interval, washing procedure and expected downtime? |
| Feed that changes rheology through concentration | Hybrid train | Falling film can efficiently pre-concentrate; forced circulation can finish the difficult high-solids section | Where does the transition occur, and are controls coordinated across both sections? |
A hybrid train is often more practical than forcing one evaporator type to handle the entire concentration range. Falling film can handle the dilute, free-flowing portion efficiently, while forced circulation provides a stable final stage when viscosity, scaling or crystallization risk rises. The transition should be established with measured rheology, not a generic solids percentage.
How multiple effect, TVR and MVR packages differ
Multiple effect
Multiple effects reuse vapour heat in successive vessels or calandrias. Adding effects generally lowers steam consumption, but increases heat-transfer area, controls, footprint and capital cost. USDA guidance identifies the same trade-off: extra effects improve efficiency while increasing capital expenditure.

Thermal vapour recompression
TVR uses motive steam to recompress vapour. It can reduce fresh-steam demand when suitable motive steam is available and can be attractive where electricity is costly or constrained. Specify motive-steam pressure and quality, ejector performance, turndown and the amount of live steam consumed; “TVR” alone does not define operating cost.
Mechanical vapour recompression
MVR compresses low-pressure vapour with a fan or compressor and returns it as the heating source. It can greatly reduce purchased steam, but it introduces a substantial electrical load and rotating-equipment requirements. Evaluate motor efficiency, compressor map, noise, spare strategy, start-up procedure, control response and the amount of backup steam needed during trips or low-load operation.
Combining technologies
Multiple effects, TVR and MVR are not mutually exclusive. A plant may use effects to recover heat, MVR to supply most of the heating duty and TVR or waste heat to trim the steam balance. Compare complete utility balances rather than isolated component claims.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare supplier bids on a common basis
Normalize every proposal to the same duty before ranking energy efficiency. The following data should appear in each bid:
- Feed and product: tonnes per hour of feed, inlet and outlet total solids, temperature, viscosity curve, density, pH, dissolved salts, suspended solids and any volatile or aroma components.
- Evaporation duty: tonnes of water evaporated per hour, operating hours per year, start-up frequency, turndown requirement and allowable product residence time.
- Utilities: steam pressure and cost, electricity tariff and demand charges, cooling-water temperature and flow, available waste heat, compressed air and water quality.
- Energy package: number of effects, TVR motive-steam rate, MVR compressor or fan power, expected steam backup and heat losses. Request values at design load and at practical turndown.
- Product protection: boiling temperature by effect, vacuum level, residence-time estimate, maximum product temperature and oxygen exposure.
- Fouling and cleaning: distributor design, wetted surfaces, cleaning-in-place chemistry, dilution washing, cleaning interval, cycle duration and production lost per cycle.
- Condensate: quality specification, segregation points, monitoring, permitted reuse and treatment required before discharge or boiler use.
- Commercial scope: installed boundaries, instrumentation, commissioning support, operator training, guaranteed performance tests, spare parts and acceptance criteria.
Compare annual cost using the same tonnes of water removed, annual operating hours, utility prices, cleaning downtime and condensate value. Include capital recovery or financing assumptions when deciding between a lower-capital multiple-effect plant and a higher-capital MVR installation. A system that consumes less steam can still have a weaker business case if electricity is expensive, operating hours are low or the compressor requires costly maintenance.

Product quality, uptime and risk checks
Protecting heat-sensitive products
Ask for the temperature profile in every effect, not just the steam temperature at the inlet. Vacuum operation, thin films and short residence times are useful for juices, dairy and plant proteins, but fouling can force higher temperatures or longer recirculation. Require a pilot or demonstration plan when flavour, colour, protein functionality or aroma recovery is critical.
Managing foam and entrainment
Foaming can reduce capacity, contaminate condensate and destabilize level control. Low vapour velocity and free-flow falling-film arrangements are specifically highlighted by ANDRITZ for limiting foam. Regardless of supplier, request separator sizing, demister details, antifoam assumptions and a condensate carryover guarantee.
Controlling fouling and scaling
Scaling rate depends on concentration path, temperature, residence time and liquor chemistry. Obtain a cleaning schedule based on the actual feed, including the point at which dilution washing is triggered. A nominal “continuous” design is not continuous if operators must stop frequently to recover heat-transfer performance.

Verifying condensate reuse
High-quality condensate can be reused, but different effects may produce different contamination levels. Require a condensate map showing each fraction’s expected conductivity, chemical oxygen demand or product carryover, segregation valves and intended reuse point. This can materially affect water and wastewater costs.
A practical selection sequence
- Characterize the feed. Measure viscosity and solids across the full concentration range, and identify scaling, crystallization, foam and volatile-aroma risks.
- Set the product limits. Define maximum temperature, residence time, allowable shear, oxygen exposure and aroma or flavour retention.
- Choose circulation. Start with falling film for stable, low-viscosity feeds; select forced circulation where viscosity, scaling or crystallization threatens film wetting; consider a hybrid when behavior changes during concentration.
- Build the energy cases. Ask each manufacturer for multiple-effect-only, TVR, MVR and any combined or waste-heat options, with complete steam, electricity and cooling-water balances.
- Check operability. Compare cleaning intervals, turndown, start-up, compressor trips, backup steam, instrumentation and operator workload.
- Run the economic model. Normalize capital, utilities, annual hours, downtime, condensate value, maintenance and financing over the same project life.
- Validate performance. Use representative feed for pilot or acceptance testing, and put evaporation rate, outlet solids, product temperature, utility consumption, condensate quality and cleaning duration into the guarantee.
Which manufacturer fits which project?
- Choose Alfa Laval when a falling-film FilmVap arrangement matches a low- or medium-viscosity, heat-sensitive feed and you want a documented path to TVR or MVR, including units listed up to 50 tonnes per hour.
- Choose GEA when you need an integrated plant and may require both falling-film and forced-circulation sections, with MVR considered as the default option for many new installations.
- Choose ANDRITZ when low-shear handling, condensate segregation, waste-heat integration or documented scaling-control features are central to the specification.
- Choose CFT Food Machinery when the project is food-focused and benefits from a model range covering medium-viscosity products, high-viscosity tomato or fruit products, MVR falling film and TVR-equipped multiple effects.
- Choose Ing. A. Rossi Technology when gentle concentration of clarified juice, cider, tea, milk or whey is required and aroma recovery is part of the value proposition.
The defensible final choice is the supplier that demonstrates stable operation on your feed at your target solids, delivers the required product quality and condensate specification, and wins after steam, electricity, cleaning downtime and capital are normalized. Manufacturer reputation or an MVR label cannot replace that duty-specific evidence.
