An M.2 heatsink is useful when heat is limiting an SSD’s sustained performance, but it does not automatically make every drive faster. Many NVMe SSDs run within their rated temperature range without an aftermarket cooler, and a correctly installed motherboard heatsink may already be enough. These five options are an editorial shortlist by compatibility and use case—not a tested ranking or a claim of comparative cooling performance.
Does your SSD need an aftermarket heatsink?
Usually, decide based on the drive, workload and existing cooling—not the promise of a speed boost. When an SSD gets hot enough to trigger thermal throttling, its protective response can reduce performance. Keeping it cooler may help it sustain performance under heat, but the available product information does not establish a temperature drop or speed gain for any heatsink in this shortlist.

Start by checking the SSD maker’s rated operating range and your motherboard’s M.2 cooling arrangement. If the board includes a heatsink, confirm it sits flush against the drive’s components through its thermal pad and that the pad’s protective film has been removed. Kingston notes that a motherboard heatsink can be effective when installed correctly. Kingston’s SSD cooling guidance and Seagate’s explanation of NVMe heatsinks discuss the conditional role of cooling.

| Option | What the manufacturer states | Best reason to consider it | Fit check |
|---|---|---|---|
| ENERMAX M.2 NVMe Heatsink | For M.2 2280 drives; supports single- and double-sided SSDs and is described as PS5-compatible. | A candidate for a 2280 drive when you need stated support for either one- or two-sided construction. | Check the installed height and console or motherboard cover clearance. ENERMAX product details. |
| ARCTIC M2 Pro | Supports single- and double-sided 2280 M.2 SSDs; marketed for PS5-compatible M.2 SSD cooling. | A straightforward 2280 option where support for both drive layouts matters. | Verify clearance for your exact system and follow the included installation instructions. ARCTIC product details. |
| TEAMGROUP T-FORCE DARK AL1 | Marketed for PS5 M.2 expansion; the product page lists several M.2 lengths, including 2280, and thermal-conductive silicone pads. | A PS5-oriented candidate if the supported length matches your drive. | Confirm the exact installed dimensions and console revision; listed drive lengths alone do not guarantee clearance. TEAMGROUP product details. |
| iFixit M.2 NVMe Heat Sink | A separately sold M.2 heatsink with an installation guide; PS5 models appear in its compatibility information. | A candidate if you want a distinct installation guide and can confirm model-specific fit. | Check current compatibility details for your exact console or PC before ordering. iFixit product and guide. |
| Seagate FireCuda 530R with heatsink | An SSD offered with an integrated heatsink. | For someone choosing a whole drive that already includes cooling, rather than adding a cooler to an existing SSD. | Check the complete drive’s dimensions and system compatibility; an integrated heatsink can conflict with a motherboard cover. Seagate product details. |
How to choose a heatsink that will actually fit
For a desktop PC
- Look up the SSD’s M.2 length, thickness, component layout and whether it has chips on one or both sides.
- Check the motherboard manual for the M.2 slot’s supported length and whether it has a supplied heatsink. Confirm that any cover can close without pressing against the drive or add-on cooler.
- Match the aftermarket cooler’s stated drive support to the SSD. A heatsink that supports 2280 drives is not automatically suitable for a different length or a thick, double-sided drive.
- Install the thermal pad as directed, remove its protective film, and secure the cooler without forcing parts together. Do not stack an aftermarket heatsink beneath a motherboard cover unless the manufacturers explicitly support that arrangement.
For PS5 M.2 expansion
Sony’s guide is the authority for console requirements: the expansion drive must be a PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe M.2 Key M SSD, and it needs effective heat dissipation, such as a heatsink and heat-transfer sheet. Sony also sets physical fit requirements, so compare the full installed drive-and-heatsink dimensions against the guidance for your exact PS5 model and revision. A listing that says “PS5-compatible” is a useful starting point, not a substitute for that check. Follow Sony’s current PS5 M.2 installation guide for the applicable dimensions and installation procedure.

If you are selecting a new drive rather than cooling one you already own, an SSD sold with an integrated heatsink—such as the FireCuda 530R option above—can simplify the parts decision. Treat it as a complete drive choice, not as an add-on heatsink. Verify the whole drive’s height and clearance: some systems already have an M.2 cover that is designed to contact a bare SSD through a thermal pad.
