Choose the kind of keyboard you need

Add a keyboard layout in Windows
If you want to type in another language or use a different key arrangement, add a Windows layout. This is a software setting; it will not change the laptop’s physical keyboard or install another one. Windows labels and navigation can vary by version, so use HP’s current keyboard troubleshooting instructions for the relevant steps.

Connect an external keyboard if the built-in one is not working
HP recommends connecting a USB wired keyboard to a USB port as a way to keep using the notebook during keyboard troubleshooting. This gives you external input without opening the laptop. HP’s recommendation supports using a wired keyboard as a workaround; it does not endorse a particular model or listing.
Run a keyboard diagnostic
Before deciding that the built-in keyboard needs replacement, run the Keyboard Test in HP PC Hardware Diagnostics, as described in HP’s troubleshooting guidance. Treat the result as diagnostic information, not automatic proof that a new keyboard is required. HP notes that Bluetooth devices are not supported by the cited keyboard diagnostic test; that limitation concerns the test and does not establish whether Bluetooth keyboards can otherwise connect.

Check the exact model before replacing the built-in keyboard
Do not buy a replacement or follow generic disassembly instructions based on “HP laptop” alone. First identify the laptop’s exact product number, then find its matching maintenance and service guide and replacement-parts information in HP’s product support catalog. HP lists documentation for identified products and families, such as the HP 15-ac000 series; those examples are not instructions or parts guidance for other models.
The exact replacement part and safe repair procedure are not established without your model’s documentation. Confirm the part against that documentation before purchasing, and use the corresponding service guide for any internal repair.

Be careful with stuck or damaged keys
HP cautions against removing a stuck key on a notebook that is under warranty and advises contacting HP for service. Damage caused by removing a key may not be covered. For an out-of-warranty notebook, HP describes a limited cleaning attempt, but warns that not all keys are removable and that longer keys may use a stabilizing metal rod. Do not force a key off; consult HP’s guidance for the applicable cautions.
