A “Clear Paper Jam” warning on the Brother MFC-J6540DW can remain even when no whole sheet is visible: scraps, a foreign object, paper-feed setup, or dust on the pick-up rollers may be involved. Use the location shown on the LCD to inspect the relevant path, then check the paper guides and support. For recurring jams, run the printer’s Remove Paper Scraps procedure; if the warning persists after Brother’s prescribed checks, contact Brother support or service rather than assuming a particular sensor has failed.
Why the warning can appear with no visible sheet
A jam message does not prove that a full sheet is stuck where you can see it. Brother lists small paper scraps or foreign objects, incorrectly positioned paper guides, paper support that is not fully inserted, incorrect manual-feed loading, and dust on the pick-up rollers among possible causes of jam or repeat-jam messages. The manufacturer’s guidance does not identify a specific sensor defect as the explanation for a persistent warning.

Check the path indicated by the LCD
Start with the location named on the printer’s LCD rather than searching blindly. Brother provides separate paper-jam instructions for the front and rear paths. Inspect only areas the instructions identify as accessible, looking for small scraps as well as a full sheet; check around the print-head path when directed. Avoid forcing paper or parts.
Rear path
- Open the rear Jam Clear Cover.
- Slowly remove any jammed paper or scraps you can reach, following the LCD and Brother’s rear-jam instructions for the MFC-J6540DW.
- Close the Jam Clear Cover completely before checking whether the warning clears.
Front, tray, and manual-feed areas
Follow the displayed location-specific prompts and Brother’s paper-jam clearing instructions for the accessible areas. Check for scraps, including around the print-head path when the instructions call for it. Do not assume a whole sheet is present if you cannot see one.

Verify paper setup and feed conditions
- Make sure the paper guides fit the loaded paper size.
- Confirm the paper support is fully inserted.
- If using the manual feed slot, load one sheet at a time and wait for the touchscreen prompt before loading another.
- Paper dust on the pick-up rollers can contribute to jams. If that may apply, follow Brother’s model-specific pick-up roller cleaning instructions.

Use Remove Paper Scraps for recurring jams
After repeated paper jams—three times or more—the LCD prompts you about removing scraps. You can also start the operation yourself:

- On the touchscreen, open Settings > Maintenance > Remove Paper Scraps.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Load the included Maintenance Sheet into the manual feed slot in landscape orientation when prompted.
If the included sheet is unavailable, Brother permits one sheet of thick A4- or Letter-size paper, such as glossy paper, as a substitute for this procedure. Brother’s guidance for persistent listed errors says to inspect inside for scraps or foreign objects and, if the message continues, disconnect the machine from power for several minutes before reconnecting it. This is a limited troubleshooting instruction, not a guaranteed reset for every jam warning. Follow the applicable error-message guidance; if the warning still appears, contact Brother support or service.

Because the MFC-J6540DW can handle faxes, check Brother’s fax-memory caution before unplugging: Brother advises transferring stored faxes to a computer or another fax machine first so they are not lost.
