The 1977 film began on only 32 U.S. screens, its story grew beyond George Lucas’s original plan, and a fan-made May the 4th tradition has roots dating back to 1978. Here are five details about the original film and its early legacy.
1. The film opened on just 32 U.S. screens
Star Wars opened in the United States on May 25, 1977, on 32 screens, including Mann’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, according to StarWars.com. That modest initial rollout is striking against the film’s later place in popular culture.

2. May the 4th has documented roots in 1978
The phrase “May the 4th Be With You” was in use by 1978, according to the earliest examples cited in StarWars.com’s history. The date’s celebration developed as a grassroots fan tradition; it does not have one official founding event or year. Lucasfilm did not invent the holiday.
3. Filming began in Tunisia in 1976
Principal photography for the film—then using the working title The Star Wars—began in Tunisia on March 22, 1976, according to StarWars.com. The location included salt flats at the edge of the Sahara, landscapes that helped establish the look of Luke Skywalker’s desert home.

4. Lucas first imagined one film about Darth Vader’s tragedy
In a 2019 StarWars.com oral history, George Lucas recalled that the initial idea was a single movie about Darth Vader’s tragedy. He said the story expanded into three films, while the events that came before remained unexplained at that stage; he later explored that backstory in the prequel trilogy.
